Last night I was tasked with a photo recon mission in a harbor on Honshu Island. The location is un important.

As we creeped towards the port submerged at periscope depth at 2 knots the sound reports were comming in almost too fast to keep up with. Some closing, some departing some stationary? Anyhow I went to the sonar to have a listen for myself. While sweeping around the dial I heard the usual screw noises then.... explosions!

Depth charges? Way far off... What tha?!

I couldent help it anymore I went to external cam (yea I cheat... :smug: ) and lo and behold not 1 not two but 4! colums of smoke. Weather is calm sea is flat clear skys you can see for miles.

So I 'flew' the external cam around to find two destroyers on fire, one sinking, another pair of sub chasers on fire and over there a ship, aground, on fire.

I panned about and looked for allied contacts and or aircraft and found nothing.

All in all two IJN ships sunk a couple others disabled I cant really say how many were damaged.

Long story short, we completed our mission, sunk two large transports on our way out but... Im left wondering, what the hell happend back there? Did I miss some AI vs AI action? Or did the AI just start running into itself?

I have never seen it in that circumstance, but if two surface ships are shooting at you, and one hits the other, the one that is hit will return fire on the shooter and thus start a gun battle between them.

I saw a similar thing once and the best I could tell many of them were sinking because of collisions with each other. I have never seen this type of thing except in restricted waters.

In the Convoy Attack training mission in SH3 something similar always happens: There is a destroyer and an armed trawler. Even if you stay underwater and never get seen, the trawler starts shooting at the destroyer and keeps it up until it's sunk. Not a civilized way to behave, I think.

Ive seen this a lot and done it on purpose
in shIII and shIV

did you put your scope up?

when I do it on purpose on run close alongside an
escort and put up the scope to get his mates to start
firing at my scope. with the nearby escort behind my
scope he inevitebly will take a hit and the game is afoot
he will run up colours and treat the offender as a renegade.
any of the other escorts will pick a side based on the price of
saurkraut in tai pei.

:|\\meh! it works for me especially if im short on torpedo's.
A fine and Thoroughly damned unenglish way of running up the score.

Nah we were well over 8,000 meters er... sorry yards away submerged and tracking sound contacts.

Hmm..sometimes allies just piss each other off and take it out on one another. Same happens in the Kriegsmarine..have seen..many British fire at each other löl

Had an similar experience some days ago when a Mogami blew a Mutsuki out of the water. There's some issue with the AI that keeps it quite narrow-minded like first: shoot with everything you've got at the enemy, second: empty, third: empty, fourth: look where you're going, fifth: look where you're shells landed, sixth: ups!
