View Full Version : Newbie to SH3 is going to try out GWX...
Hey all, after playing vanilla for a week or so and hearing all the raves about GWX Ive downloaded it (wow, huge mod!) and will be installing it later tonight. (day is going slowly dammit).
Anyway, I got my game off steam, so I really dont want to have to uninstall and re-download it again via steam. I have not touched any files in SH3, its essentially a clean SH3 1.4b install, no mods. So do I really need to re-install it before GWX or can I just delete my current careers file in "my docs" as stated in the install instructions and then go from there?
Im assuming the GWX 2.1 is a self extracting patch to GWX 2 to be run after installing 2.0? Which leads me to anorth question, because my game is via steam Im not sure where to find it, I will find it but Im assuming I install GWX into the SH3 root file?
Another question, I heard that GWX dissabled the external camera (F12), if this is true is there a way to put it back?
Yes Im still green, just getting into trying manual targeting....
Thanks for any help, looking foward to the challenge.

If external camera is available or not only depends on ure choosen reality settings in the game. Dunno about sh3 from steam and how to apply gwx to it.
Yeah I figured you could do that, its just that I seem to remember reading somewhere that the option to enable/dissable it was taken out for GWX.
Ive found where SH3 is located in the steam folder, other then having a long path to its location the root SH3 looks like it would if it was installed off a disk. I guess the only way to find out is to try.... unless someone here using GWX with a steam version of SH3 can confirm?
How about the install process, at first I thought the GWX 2.1 was the full version (due to its size) but after DLing the .BIN files I realized that the GWX2.0 was the real version (installer) and GWX2.1 is an update to that, right???
Cheers

right install 2.0 then 2.1 on top of it
right install 2.0 then 2.1 on top of it
Thanks for clarifying that!
Time to leave work, wish me luck on my (hopefully) first patrol.

piggy my friend.....
gx isnt going to take away the things you like in sh3...options or otherwise..
external cam is there.
auto targeting is there...everything you need.
it only makes sh3 what it should have been.
if it does remove any small feature you want to keep...then theres a mod out there to replace anything you want.
you wont look back mate
i though just a year ago that sh3 was sh3....and was pretty limited....until i found gwx......WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s...when you spot aircraft in gwx....do yourself a favour and DIVE!!!!!!!!
its not the crap shoot stock sh3 is:up:

Welcome to Subsim, Piggy.
If you want some extra imersion on your game, I suggest you download my sound pack mod, it`s a 400mb file, over 10 thousand sound files will be replaced in your game, for more realistic all-around simulation. It even have a 34 minute ambient sound for the submarine interior, with crew chatting and everything.
You can download it by clicking on my signature, and don`t forget to also download the 3.1 and 3.2 updates, with important corrections. The updates are small, around 3mb each.
Good hunting!
Welcome.:)
Take the time to really go through the GWX manual. You'll find that it explains the reasoning behind the changes that were made to the game. There are a lot of helpful tips on making surfaced & submerged attacks, escape & evasion, etc. Some really good historical background information too.

Hey all, well all went well with the install, I think.... (a few crashes)
Although I had read the manual regarding the august start dates and what to do for some reason I managed to screw it up. I signed up for the 7th/13th flotilla (thought it was the only one that you could start with a VIIB) and went out into the bay, hit the target ships and then returned to base and requested a transfer. I guess I returned too early because my next patrol date from wilhelmshaven was august 5th (though I didnt realize this at first). I headed out to rockall banks and sank a british ship not realizing the war had NOT started yet... I guess I was a little too excited...
I reloaded that career but the game crashed during loading and when I restarted all my previous saves were gone... long story short after 2 hours I finally started a new career with the 2nd in a VIIB.
Encountered my first convoy late last night east of Rockall banks, escorted by 4 destroyers & frigates and a light crusier. Managed to get in and sink a large ore ship with two eels but my third eel missed the other smaller merchant. Got away clean, shadowed it for a 6 hours and lined up for another run. This time I was spotted (or heard) by the lead destroyer before I could get into firing position. He chased me around a bit, some DC's came close but no damage, lost him for a bit when I went under the convoy. It was getting late so I thought I would try something a little crazy. I went to flank and rose to PD just behind a merchant and lined up perfectly for the light cruiser. I thought it would be an easy kill but I wasnt as close as I wanted to be, two shot salvo from 1000yd's but he saw my torps and went to flank, one of them just missed. I had to shut it down as it was after midnight.... hopefully if I load it up the convoy will still be there...
Needless to say Im going to have to change my tactics a little, obviously I was being spoiled with vanilla SH3 which was a blast the first few days but started to feel way to easy after a week.
Anyway, this mod is WAY more fun then stock SH3. I had already started using manual targettting, but Im using the WO in some cases and to check my calcs. Current realism level Im using is 69%.
Couple of questions, all the "sss, sss, sss" radio messages, what do they mean, just flavor?
Also, im being given coordinates for ships etc but how do translate them to a location on the nav map, I havent seen any tools for coordinates, more flavor?
Thanks for mentioning the sound packs Philipp, I'll give them a go.
von hally, I usually do CD when I spot a plane but yes Ive heard its even more important in GWX, as it should be.
Thanks everyone, Im looking forward to the 4 day long weekend here, to boot its supposed to rain for the next 3 days :D
Wow, long post.

Works great fixed a minor prob with bdu msg and tc for me as well....
:rock:After i managed to wreck the capitals of the taskforce heading to intercept the bismark some crewmates asked if we would be able to save some of the poor souls in the lifeboat. Crash driving running for our lives (was a 600/1000m close distance attack) i was irritated of this suggestion and to my surprise the soundpack could read my mind by letting the captain answer: "stfu...we think about it later....silence !!!!"
:rotfl:
Im a little concerned about adding to many mods due to the steam version. If something goes wrong I have to re-download via steam which takes a while. Though Im sure SH Commander wont be an issue, but what does it give you... (I know too many things to list, just get it man! lol)
Starting in the 7th/13th is rather frustrating for me though due to the slowdowns near high taffic areas/ports in GWX for me, thats why I gave up and started a new career with the 2nd because I cant run compression any higher then 128 near these areas, so it takes a while to do a 4 day patrol waiting for the message to return to base and transfer.
Further to this I was getting bored waiting at 128 in the protected bay so I thought I would head out to the baltic sea through that small channel. I was on my way at 128 compression when all of a sudden 3 german merchants (raiders) who were stationary near the channel started shooting me as well as shooting at each other, I took a fair bit of damage. No way to get out into the channel with those 3 sitting at the head of it, bug?

Nah
Because you sank the target ships you became an enemy of ALL neutral countries
Even your own
:rotfl:
Thats why the message on the 4th\5th says to warp back to base not sail
Before you added GWX it would have been easier to make a copy of your SilentHunterIII folder
No need to redownload the game then as you already have a copy
Make as many copies as you like and use for different mods ( WAC etc ) or just keep as a back up
If you suffer from slowdowns in ports try enabling the GWX Lite harbour traffic - reduces the amount of traffic in German ports a lot
And with SH3commander you have a start at sea option - means you are further away from harbour traffic
Ahh so thats why they attacked me!
Didnt think about making copy of my install....:damn:
That starting at sea alone with SH Commander makes it worth it.

The chatting is in the background, very low volume, so it does not disturbs when you're silent running. Unfortunally, sh3 does not allow us to set a different sound for when we're silent running.
You knew all this, but asked anyway. Wrench-thrower! :arrgh!:
Thomsen.....
I just downloaded your sound pack and checked it out, great sounds, especially the ambient. Being new to this game where do I extract these too? I dont have JSGME yet, Im afraid I went about this backwards I think.

JSGME is a must-have. It makes adding and removing a mod extremely easy and straightforward, with one mouse click.

If you don't have JSGME, you're going to regreat badly. With that software, you can add and remove mods at any time, quick and easily. If you installed GWX 2.0, you already have JSGME installed. Check in your SH3 folder, you'll see a file named JSGME, once you open it, you'll see the mods you have avaliable on the left panel, and the ones you have active in the game showing in the right panel. To add a new mod, you must copy it inside the MODS folder, located inside your main SH3 directory. And the folders must be like this:
SH3 root/mods/Thomsen's Sound Pack/data... sounds... library... etc...
JSGME you pick the folder name to name the mod, and will put the contents of the folder inside SH3 installation, so the folder system is very important.
PM me if you have any further doubts about it.
Edit... I found it confusing, lets explain again...
SH3/MODS/*MOD NAME*/*CONTENTS OF THE MOD FOLDER, (LIKE DATA, SOUND, LIBRARY, ETC)*
Do NOT place the mod's folder twice, like: SH3/MODS/*MOD NAME*/*MOD NAME*/DATA... ETC, it wont work.
Do NOT miss the mod folder, like: SH3/MODS/DATA, ETC, it wont work.
In most cases, you just have to extract the contents of the .rar file into the MODS folder and it will work.

I love you too.:/\\k: I've been around a long time, and use an ambient sound mod made years ago. After its first release somebody pointed out that there was talking and sounds that would be bad while silent running. That mod was pulled and redone so it's much more subtle, and works well with any mode. I didn't know the answer, but I do admit I certainly meant to 'tweak your nose' just a little bit.:sunny:

Here is a link to the User Guide. It will tell you all the things it does. Just remember that Commander is not a mod - it works outside of the game to let you control many different aspects.

Thanks for the explanation, didnt realize I already had JSGME, sorry I took so long to respond.
Much appreciated all.
Had something odd happen last night on my patrol. I intercepted a convoy, on my first attack I got two ships, one sunk right away the other took about 30mins to go down, I was deep, avoiding depth charges when I got the "she's going down" message. When I looked at my nav map it showed a grey ship sunk icon? It didnt sink due to stormy weather, it was flat as glass at the time.
I surface, overtake the convoy and move in for another attack. This time I got 3 ships, again one sunk right away, the other two took a while, again when I was deep avoiding DC's I got the messages, "she's going down" yet when I looked at the nav map there was only one icon, the first ship that went down right away, the other two didnt even show up at all, not grey, just nothing.
However when I check my log it shows all of them, and Im being credited for them but some arent showing up on the nav map. First time this has happened? Its not big deal really as Im getting credit, but why arent they showing up? Do I need to be surfaced or have my periscope up for them to show up as sunk on the nav map?

A grey icon can mean either sunk by the weather or unidentified by you visually ( if you fire a torp say in a convoy and miss the intended target but hit another you havent locked on ) or because you are deep and out of visual range
Sometimes happens you get no icon but as long as you get the credit its all good
