View Full Version : Improved weather (allegedly)....

Hi all

If I understand correctly, some work was done to 'improve' the weather i.e. reduce the shocking weather that lasts for weeks at a time in 'stock' SH3. Just wondering what experiences people are having with this. Here's a comment on some of mine:

I had started a patrol in 2.1 and noticed 2 things:

1. the visibility range seemed poor, by which I meant ships were being spotted at around 4km max, even in 'unlimited' visibility. That made me think the visibility was at 'stock' level of 8km, reduced by conditions and crew attributes.

2. the weather was much better. I encountered a storm or two, but they lasted around a day at most, and usually less than that. The original weather tended to be crappy for days on end.

I then installed the 16km mod and started a new patrol as I was only part-way into the other patrol, so needed to delete that career before installing the mod etc. That took care of the visibility range (and I'm used to 16km from NYGM). I noticed, however, that the weather seems to have gone back to the 15m/s, heavy overcast and rain (on and off) that lasted for as many as 4 days without interruption. Either I've been very unlucky, or I figured it might be possible that the 16km mod altered the weather in some way.

In my recent patrol, I've had a period of 13 days where the BEST weather I've had was 9m/s winds, clear overcast sky and 'moderate' visibility. Much of the time had rain and 'poor' visibility. It makes it all but impossible to do anything, so I tend to dive to 30m, set speed to 1kt, put TC to 1024x and check the weather every 4 hours via external view (bit of a 'cheat' but it saves coming to p-depth). I do this as rain and poor visibility makes any kind of attack really difficult - even if you detect people through your sound gear, actually sighting them an getting a shot off is all but impossible.....

Any comments? What are other people finding? IS there a difference in weather between 8km and 16km vision ranges (don't expect there would be, but.....)?

As an aside, enjoying GWX 2.1 very much.

Cheers

I have given up on the weather. If a storm lasts more than two days, I use Rubini's weather mod: Stop the Rain.
The only problem with it is it apparently doesn't change the wind and sea state, at least when I use it.

The weather changes much less frequently in winter... it varies from one change every 48 hours in the middle of winter, to multiple changes per day at the height of summer.
So during the winter months, whatever weather you have - at any given time - you are likely to be stuck with that weather, or weather very much like it, for at least a few days.

I use the default GWX 8km (never used the 16km as I'm not sure that my graphics card's up to it). I've had patrols where the weather has been great (calm seas, few clouds, etc.) and that has lasted for days, sometimes weeks, on end. I've also had the opposite happen too. If I remember correctly they (the GWX team) did try to fix the weather; as much as possible within the limits of the game. There seem to be a lot of variables involved (ie. what weather conditions you save in, etc.) that determine your weather. I did try that SH3 Weather mod when I was still playing stock but found that I had a lot of problems with it (ie. the "crash dive of doom" even when I was surfaced) so I uninstalled that mod.

Weather logs from two of my patrols (GWX 2.1 16km Atmosphere):

Patrol 12 (November 3 1940 - November 21 1940)
Nov 3 - Nov 5 - moderate visibility - wind 4 m/s
Nov 6 - Nov 10 - unlimited - 0 m/s
Nov 11 - Nov 12 - poor (rain) - 7 m/s
Nov 13 - Nov 20 - unlimited - 0 m/s
Nov 21 - moderate - 9 m/s

Patrol 15 (June 1 1941 - June 22 1941)
Jun 1 1941 - moderate - 4 m/s
jun 2 - poor (rain) - 15 m/s
Jun 3 - reduced - 15 m/s
Jun 4 - poor (rain) - 10 m/s
jun 5 - 6 - moderate - 15 m/s
jun 7 - unlimited - 7 m/s
jun 8 - reduced - 15 m/s
jun 9 (no info)
jun 10 - moderate - 0 m/s
jun 11 - 12 - poor (rain) - 6 m/s
jun 12 (night) - moderate - 0 m/s
jun 13 - poor (rain) -6 m/s
jun 14 - moderate - 0 m/s
jun 15 - moderate - 15 m/s
jun 17 - clear - 8 m/s
jun 18 - moderate - 12 m/s
jun 19 - 20 - moderate - 15 m/s
jun 21 - unlimited - 15 m/s
jun 22 - poor (rain) - 12 m/s
jun 22 (night) - moderate - 7 m/s

It does seam that the weather is more constant in winter. And it's definately better in GWX than it was in stock game.

I also have a feeling that the weather is much better in coastal waters, than it is in the middle of the ocean.

I've also noticed that sometimes the WO gives wrong weather report, but so does my local weather men on TV. :D

Yeah, sometimes the Navigator will give you an incorrect weather report. He'll say that there's no precipitation when it's pouring. Kind of annoying...
