I have used the search function to try to find a mod to get the s boat to the 14.5kt surfaced, 11 kt submerged speed but couldn't find any. If a modder:know: or someone could point me in the right direction the crew and I would throw a party:rock: on the sub. I'm running TMO RSRD PE NSM SCAF.

cheers!

what speeds are you getting now?

edit the config file with the windows editor, it will loo like this :

ClassName=SSS42
3DModelFileName=data/Submarine/NSS_s18/NSS_S18
HumanPlayable=YES
Interior=data/Interior/NSS_SClass/NSS_Sclass

MaxSpeed=13
MaxSpeedSubmerged=9
Length=66.82
Width=6.3

2=1,2,4
3=1,3,4
4=1,4
5=2,3
6=1,3
7=2,4

simply change the needed values to what you want, otherwise you also have to open the .sim file with s3d and change the values there.

I'm gettin almost 13kt surfaced and just over 9 submerged. Read on wiki that it was supposed to be around 14.5 and 11. I'll get right on searching to the program to mod what you showed me keltos:up: . Thanks everyone!

Think I'd bet on the devs being right over the wiki. That's where the smart money goes.

I succesfully changed and saved the two numbers in green to 14 an 11 but no performance change. Still trying to do what you describe in the last sentence but s3d doesn't seem to want to open the files, all i get are "photo" and "upc" files.

BTW links with the historic speed of sboats.

my boat had a great mechanical history!:roll: (fires, flooding)

I wouldn't. Ever source I've seen says 14.5/11, including Bagnasco's Submarines of World War Two.

And considering the number of complaints there have beenabout other things the devs got wrong...

True, but those are test numbers, not operational numbers between overhauls or major refits. Depending on the wear they'd taken, some s-boats could barely make 12 knots surfaced by the time they were due for an overhaul.

These were WWI boats that were nowhere near running at spec. Most were downright dangerous with performance way below design parameters. I would accept boat logs from WWII as evidence and nothing else. Just my opinion, but we ARE trying to simulate war experience aren't we?

Like swdw writes, the S boats were very old and tired boats by the time WWII rolled around. Norman Friedman, whom I consider to be the expert of American subs, states in U.S. Submarines to 1945 that the max speed of the S-18s was 13 knots and the S-42s at 12.5 in 1939. I lend very, very little credence to web sites for matters like this.

hm, so the real max speed should be around 12 surfaced and 7or8 submerged? I would make it realistic but the changes won't take effect in the cfg file. I can't simulate the spontanious electrical fires and flooding on my ss 140 though.

You have to edit the SIM file in the NSS_S18 folder (/Data/Submarine). For the surface speed, it's under unit_Submarine, then unit_Ship, then Propulsion, then max_speed. Submerged speed is under the E_propulsion section of unit_submarine.

Max speed submerged of an S boat in 1939 was about 9.5 knots.

Excellent points, and something I hadn't considered. And yes, as with torpedoes I'd rather bitch about having it be failing me than have it be perfect.

I'll crawl back under my bridge now.:oops:

Oh, it's all part of the learning process. Everyone picks up little bits and pieces of information along the way that allows one to gain a better knowledge of how these boats worked and fought.

I have edited the subs .sim but instead of going to my new settings they actually go down somewhat. (I am using Porpoise class but the same should apply. I'm trying for 50 kts instead of the stock 19 surfaced but now the best I can manage is 16 kts.) To explain it a little better.

I'm coming back to subsim after 3 months of being away on top of going to SH4 so I appolgize for any noob-ness I may show.:damn:
