I was curious,is there snow and icebergs to be found in SHIII?.The reason I ask is because I have not had a patrol yet near the Arctic routes in my campaign so far.Early on in my game I had the usual patrols around Britain, now I seem to be posted around Western Africa (F.Town) and S.America.It is now April 42,and my current patrol is in EE65.I have'nt even had a patrol on the US east coast either, but I am sure it will come soon enough.
I would love to get the chance to drive hard through snow and blizzards, while keeping watch for dangerous icebergs!
Sorry if all this may have been discussed by other people before, but I only joined the forum today.

If all goes well on my current patrol, and I have enough fuel left,I may take a quick trip south towards Antarctica, least then I will find out if there is snow and ice :o

Honestly, I have seen neither in campaign mode, even on patrols around Russia. I don't believe snow is modeled on the land at all, and certainly not as falling precip. You could model snow to fall instead of rain, but then it wouldn't rain. That means in a patrol during summer, or in warm southern waters, it would snow too. Not very realistic.

Icebergs are in the game as random enviromental units, but you may have to take a look in mission editor to find out where they will be and when. I have them set in mine, but it's very rare that you see them.

Greetings,

I believe the information about the snow is correct. Precipitation only shows up as rain. As for the icebergs, they are out there. I've been playing SH3 for a little over two years, almost always have a patrol going, and I just saw my first bergs in the last two weeks. Just north of Iceland they showed up on the map as a small slow moving convoy. Once I got into visual range, my jaw dropped:huh:

There have been successful attempts to mod in snow, but the problem is that all precipitation ends up looking like snow (such as in a squall off the coast of Puerto Rico).

Instead of travelling all the way down there why not try a patrol in Grid AE (ie. AE 37). You'll probably see some icebergs & may sink some tonnage too.

Just a thought...:)

I never seen one yet.

First time I saw an iceberg, I heard it first. Was underwater and sonar picked up a "slow moving merchant." Excited, I set a course for intercept.

When I raised scope to ID it, I --> :rotfl: It was a 'berg.

Only other time I've seen them was just a few days ago. A group of 5 I think. I snapped a pic:

Haha. I'm just glad I didn't "stalk" this convoy via sonar like the lone iceberg previously. :rotfl:

to bad someone cant make a special sound for Icebergs so you and tell it is a berg and not a ship, Like they did with the whales.

I can't really imagine what you would make an iceberg sound like though. They wouldn't make too many noises besides random creaking and moaning, except when they break up.

Which brings up an interesting question... what would an iceberg sound like on a sonar ping return? It is just frozen water, so would it have any return? Sound can travel through it just they same. :hmm:

Since the density of ice is (slightly) different than that of water, a sonarping would return just as it would when striking metal. Because of the slight difference, maybe it wouldn't be as loud as with metal, but it would return all the same.

Oh, there was one whale in GWX south of Iceland ... but I shot it with my 88 :arrgh!: .

Icebergs are broken in stock SH3 but were later fixed by GWX and other large mods. They are random occurrences and will be reassessed with each load of the game and are constantly moving.

Snow is modeled in the arctic regions but snow fall is not. Snow fall can be added to the game but you would loose the rain. It's one or the other.

@ The others

Stop shooting the aquatic mammals.:stare:

A shame about snowfall,of all the environmental effects to be found in the world around us you would have thought the devs would have included snowfall/blizzards,at least for the Northern areas.I recall a chapter in my book 'iron coffins' where the author speaks of traversing all the way around through the Denmark strait to get into the Atlantic, only to be caught days later in fierce winds and snow, that had to be regularly scraped off the deck, and from beards also :arrgh!:
It would have been great to be caught up in similar situations in SHIII,where you would have to be careful how much time you spent on the surface due to the constant barrage from ice winds, and the risk of cracking pipes/valves,similar to pressure effects already in game.I also think it would seriously affect the fatigue of the watch crew, unless they were Vikings and bred for such hardships :arrgh!:

Murr , I apprieciate your eagerness for me to find icebergs around grid AE36 was it?,but sadly at the moment I am on my way towards EE65,just NE of the P.O.S. (port of spain). Thanks all the same :)

Effigy , that is a great shot of icebergs you have

I could/should say, "You haven't seen the size of the home aquarium"

The dolphins and whales were scripted in....but I have come across both, separately ingame.

For dolphins....just go to the Canaries or that Spanish port (can't remember the name) west and slightly north of Gib.

Whales are harder to spot, but they move north east off the coast of Canada and through the GIUK gap.

The icebergs are a quite regular occurence.

I've heard whales while manning the hydrophone but haven't seen them yet. I was almost tempted to follow the sound but heard a ship so I went in that direction instead.

That depends on what configuration ingame your playing.

Sealife/marine sounds are incorporated into some mods.
