View Full Version : Propeller Particle Effects?

Hello guys for first posty and all, but anyway been messing about with SH4 adding new effects so far ive done bow splash and wake for my subs but one thing i can not find to change is the propeller effects, i would like them to be like the torpedo effect just slightly larger and with a longer lifespan. But i cant find the data where the settings are for the propellers. :-?

I checked in the particle.dat and found the propeller wake but after thinking this was it and edited it using the torpedo effect as a base, saved it out and checked ingame and the effects were un-effected as in they were still default. Even deleting the propeller wake from the .dat file didnt do anything so i dont think their using that one for the particle effect. Ive sorta hit a wall on this one and could do with some help. Btw ive checked my mods folder and i dont think theres another particle.dat taking over.....

The propeller wake particle generator is the wake above the water, not the bubbles (under water).

Check out the @helix_bubbles particle generator. I think this is what you are looking for. :up:

thanks skwasjer, ive been playing with the settings for a couple of hours now and made some intresting effects for the propeller, heres my screens for what ive done so far.

One problem tho with the propeller effects, the texture which im using for the cavitation effect is also used by anther effect which is causing some problems.. :(

looks great!!
the textures for the effects are defined in the particle generator (BitmapParticles)
which are listed in the materials.dat. you can easily add new textures
there..

Little Update:

What ive done so far is insted of using a 2d texture for the propeller cavitation, ive managed to make the particle spin alround with the propeller and make a sorta neat effect. Im just trying to make it emit a bit more realistic as it emits in a sorta coneish way starting from the centre of the propeller. Im trying to make it emit from outside of the propeller and keep the spinning motion.

I didnt notice much differnce in FPS. Atm im sorta experimenting with the propeller particles trying to make them flow more fluid with the propellers rotating, ive almost got it sorted so its like this. :)

Well little update, its been a bit of a nightmare trying to get the effect i want as you can see from these screeshots.

The particles need to start at a set postion and rotate but im having trouble in finding the correct values for this to happen, it always seems to want to cone outwards. And the particles are having trouble keeping up it seems is well, even at 5000 particles per second it still emits patchy. Its like the smaller the particle you set it at the harder it becomes to keep up and the higher you go on the creation rate and maxparticles the more it becomes patchy unable to flow.

Awesome!!! I don't know if any of you guys saw it, but I had a whole thread devoted to cavitation and making it better in game. The whole thing turned into a scientific debate about how the fleet boat props cavitated in real life...

Anyways, keep up the good work!

Try get help from Nisgeis, he is very skilled for working with the particle generator and made the new shell effects for PE 3.3. :hmm:

I think the U boats and fleet boats use same cavitation effect so i'd presume it'll work with U-boat Expansion pack aswell.

I'm more than willing to help with this, if you'll let me take a look at what you already have. As I understand it, you want the cavitation to stay as a cylinder, described by the propeller's edges, with a collapse of the water vapour bubbles after a brief period of time?

Let me know if you'd like some help :D.

Thank you very much , already enabled , now the propellers are spinning and working 100% properly , almost two years to fix the problem of the SH4 propellers , thank you very much :up:

Downloaded , go to check now , thank you very much :up: , I need to put my hands inside this SH4 files ,and learn how to tweak and mod in my way and my taste , for instance , I think the colour of the ocean in the Environmental 4.7 mod is a bit dark ,can you tell me please where are the files to mod this ?thank you ( may be this is not so easy )

Nice mod ,thank you very much, actually the drops of water are realistically smaller , only a detail I have found sometimes ( not always ) the spash of water is somehow behind the bow instead of ahead , really dont know if this is realistic ,

Finally had some time to look at this. If you take a look at @Helix Bubbles.FastParticleGenerator.BitmapParticles.n.Ve locity.SpeedDirection and Velocity, changing either SpeedDirection.Y or Velocity should be what you are looking for.

To address patchy bubbles - you don't need anywhere near as high as 5,000 particles for this effect, a few hundred should be just fine. To get a steady release, make sure that @Helix Bubbles.FastParticleGenerator.BitmapParticles.n.Cr eation.Rate multiplied by .Life is less than MaxParticles. For example if you tell it to have a max of 100 particles, but to release 50 every second for five seconds, then after two seconds it's going to run out of particles, until the first ones start to die. So you'll have a patchy of three seconds where there are no particles.

This mod is awfully close to real. The exact shape of a bow wave is variable, of course, depending on things like the shape of the hull, speed, sea state, etc., but with a sharp-stemmed vessel like a submarine, moving at speed, the white foam/spray breaks a little aft of the stem, as here:

Yes indeed, we patiently await realistic cavitation.

In related news, is there a way to delay the onset of cavitation until a certain speed? It's kinda lame seeing little streamers of bubbles while silent running...
