View Full Version : [WIP] RMS Titanic, Olympic Class liner (WW1 era)

VonDos

Hi everyone!

With privateer help, using Aquitania as base, i've started this new liner:

RMS TITANIC

She was an Olympic class liner, owned by White Star Line
(Like Rms Olympic and Hmhs Britannic)

She sank in 1912 after hit iceberg, with great loss of lifes.

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/4553/rmstitanicva2.jpg

Note:

1 - 4° funnels was a dummy, this is correct.
2 - She isn't a WW2 era liner, i know, btw... what a nice ship she was!

What do you think about this?

I think you should stop making these great huge ocean liners and make what I want instead!
:rotfl:

No, just kidding. This one is looking very good, whether she was there for real or not.:sunny:

But i'm a liner fans, what can i do? xd

PS Titanic will take a place in my campaign, in bermuda triangle :yep:

Looks awesome Vondos, glad to see that you found a model that worked. Just remember, it's only gonna take one torpedo to sink that baby, after all the RL version hit an icecube, not 600 lbs of TNT. :D Can't wait to test her out mate.

There were others of the same class though that were used for troop transport ships (such as HMT Aquitania) in WW2::D

Very good point Reece.
And if you want to be honest?
There are many units missing.
Any unit added is a plus.
As The Grey Wolves are moveing on to SH4?
It's up to you all to complete things.
You know you have complete support right?

Looks good VD as usual.

I got one for you,how about the SS United States,a ship still afloat today, would be harder to sink though,it was a trans atlantic liner, but the thinking was in war time it would be a troop ship, developed for the navy it has many water tight compartments ready for war time use.
Here is the full story..

Still the fastest liner afloat.
Bigger than Titanic..

As great as usual, thuogh for my liking it could be a sort of gost ship for SH3.

Just glimpsed at HMS Warspite at your signature VonDos aand was struck by the idea that we still don't have HMS Renown while having nice Repulce model. :arrgh!: May be a next moding idea to share?!

It would be great if you could build the S.S. America, which was the smaller version of the S.S. United States. The America was used as a troop transport throughout WW2 and went by the name of S.S. West Point during wartime. She sailed unescorted due to her high speed. By the end of the war the West Point had transported over a 100,000 Allied soldiers. The America also had numerous gun emplacements on board during the war:

http://www.ssmaritime.com/ss-america-australis.htm

The S.S. America would make a beautiful and historically accurate target!
(My Dad sailed on her along with 6,000 other soldiers from Norfolk to Naples,Italy in 1943!)

Can you make the S.S. America?

VonDos,

Your model of the Rex has some of the basic shape of the SS America, perhaps you could use it as a starting point for a model of the SS America.

The Titanic looks fantastic! Just gorgeous!

Say, I was thinking about something here...

Don't the ships in SH3 break in half if the torpedo strikes in the right spot?

So, can't we use this trigger to activate when the bow is underwater and the stern is above the water level? That way, if we strike a torpedo on the bow, she will sink like she really did, and when the right moment comes, she will slip in two...

What the top minds in this forum think about this? possible?

VonDos, this ship is coming around incredible! Those wakes should be a little larger, more foam around the ship, she makes a pretty large mess in the water around it!

But it's looking very good indeed!

Madox58
08-08-08, 06:04 PM
Even with the draft adjusted, the nodes need lowered a bit.
Then the wakes and such will be better.
:yep:

The Zones are nearly sorted.

As a smaller unit was used?
All zones need enlarged and moved.
Then some zones needed to be added.

The deck cabins no longer disappear,
and you can blast things away now.

IIRC the artificial funnel was used for passengers pet storage :hmm:

I read somewhere that just before she went down, a passenger climbed inside and opened up all the dog cages. Not that it did the dogs any good - a couple of them were later found dead/dying in the debris field after the sinking.:nope:

@privateer - it was common back then to add extra funnels to passenger ships for purely aesthetic reasons. Three and four-funneled liners tended to be more popular with the public, so it may have been worth the initial investment.

I haven't idea about how to realize this O_O

I think this value has to do with two figures. A: Initial damage caused by torpedo impact. B: Secondary damage caused by cargo (fuel or ammo cargo type)

I ran into this when I was messing around with torpedo damage zones to try to get it close to a real value of 600 LBS of TNT. The ships carrying cargo would split in half at least 90% of the time, no matter where they were hit (bow, stern, under hull, direct impact.)

Madox58
08-15-08, 05:39 PM
Stop and look at the files involved people.

With breaking up a ship?

The collisionable stuff is attached to the FULL Hull object.
The _B and _A are not visibley assigned in the dat.
They appear when the MAIN object which has the master values
assigned is terminated.

I would start at createing a NEW zone.
Then assign that zone to different areas
and re-assign parent-child ID's.
Always watching the Visable settings in the dat!

S3D can show you this stuff.
Open your minds!!
It's all there!!

Please just continue as you first intended VonDos, the breaking of the ship could be done later, I for one couldn't care less if it broke in half or not, in fact I think sinking ships look more awesome when they don't split in half, IMO!!:D Such as:

Nice work overall but it looks like the bow still has some rake to it. The Titanic's bow was essentially straight, forming an almost perfect 90' angle to the water surface. Generally few ships had raked bows until circa 1930-1935 (not counting old-fashioned clipper bows).

iambecomelife
08-18-08, 06:59 PM
From an angle a vertical bow will often appear sharply raked. There was a slight rake and a very pronounced slant beneath the waterline but the portion above water seems to have been a bit straighter than vondos' model. I don't mean to be a total "rivet-counter", or anything - it's your call.:yep:

For my two-penneth i'm with Reece.

I think a ship that size would look better slipping under the waves in one piece.

Perhaps you could release the ship VonDos, and include, or add later, an alternate zones file for those that want to increase the chances of her breaking up?

I know i won't be disappointed if she stays together.

If i ever see her in game i'll probably be too busy looking at her to get a decent salvo off :)

:rotfl:
We put deck chairs on for your enjoyment,
But the Bow is off by 4 degrees or so.
It is a game after all.
And how many could stand actual scrutany?
:hmm:

Face it people.
There is NOT one ship for the SH games that is perfect to the last detail!!
Show me the one you THINK is perfectly modeled?
I'll show you the faults in the model!!

As I said - just a suggestion, with no disrespect intended... I understand vondos must have worked hard on it, and I know firsthand how hard it is to design accurate shipping.

As I said - just a suggestion, with no disrespect intended... Oh I don't think anyone has taken your advise the wrong way!:D I for one am happy we have 2 great ship builders for this sim!:yep:
It's just that this is "the" ship that has probably had the biggest impact in history, so naturally everyone is puting in their 2 cents, you only have to look at how many pages to this thread, for a single ship, that's a lot of interest, and has a lot of people waiting for the launch!

Peace, mates ^_^
Advices and suggestions are always welcome :yep:
I've said and i will say always

Bow profile isn't so difficult to change, i've done something similar while converting from QM to QE; i'll try a small correction for a more historical correct ship :ping:

I think it's remarkable!! I'm sure you've got it right, so this is more a matter of my surprise, but I hadn't realised the funnels were quite so raked.

VonDos,

Not to be a nagging rivet counter, but the funnels and masts on your model appear to be angled too far backward.

Looking at side views of the Titanic, the funnels and masts are not so raked backward:

http://www.abratis.de/ship/exterior/pic/titanic.jpg

Could you reduce the angle on the funnels and masts a bit?

VonDos, mate, I feel sorry for you. You must feel like people are picking this thing apart. I think it looks superb! Brilliant, considering the model you got wasn't even really intended for a game like this. You had to do alot of hard work. I applaude you for it mate!

If I ever encounter her, I think I'll just pipe "all hands on deck" and let them get photos,, she is just too pretty to send eels her way.

I also agree with the rest, One hull, I think my entire torp load would be needed to cut her in half.

OK, since nobody has mentioned it before I will tell you a curiosity while we wait for this beauty to be released :)

As has been said already, Titanic was the first of a class of vessels with three units, the two others being Olympic and Gigantic. This last one saw a change in her name after the Titanic accident, to "Britannic" (Gigantic remembered too much to the ill-fated older brother). But WW1 started in 1914, and the ships were taken over by the government and completed as troop transport (Olympic) and hospital ship (Britannic)

Britannic hit a mine in the Mediterranean and went down, and here is where the interesting detail arises: Among the survivors was a nurse, Mrs. Violett Jessop, who had already been a survivor from the Titanic, where she worked as waitress :o That woman survived the sinking of the two twin ships, and lived to go down with Cousteau on an exploration submarine to visit the remains of the Britannic.

It is unknown if the White Star Line allowed her later to travel in another of their ships :rotfl:

\Position light models were white, now they're red and green; ok
\Marconi's cables was withe near Marconi's room's top; now they're black; ok
\Added a gold stripe between black and white on the hull (White star livery)
