I've returned to SH4 after some time away, and I have a question for the group. I'm using SH4 1.4 (haven't gotten around to 1.5 yet), and I just added TMO and RSRD. So far so good -- what an improvement over stock! But, I miss my binoculars! I've searched the forum in vain for a quick way to re-activate them. Are they mapped to a different hot key now? Or should I change something in the commands.cfg file? Forgive my ignorance ... any help would be appreciated! The crew's getting tired of going to battle stations everytime the Old Man wants to pick up his binoculars.

IIRC it's key B.

In fact, no, not in TMO. "B" is now battle stations, hence my reference to the crew heading to battle stations when I want the binoculars.

Doesn't the mouse scroll wheel bring up the binoculars when you are on the conning deck?

Haven't tried that -- I'll check it out later this evening and report back.

Is there an easy way to re-map hot keys, just out of curiosity? "Easy" being defined as something yours truly, with zero modding/programming experience, could follow, like "scroll to xxxx line and change Binoculars = off to Binoculars = on", that sort of thing.

Yeah: http://rapidshare.com/files/21455294/SetKeys1_3.zip

SetKeys program (I hope that link still works). Had to do a forum search to find it for you. It helps you map/remap keys. Works a charm in SHIII, and I'm sure it works in SHIV as well. Has an easy to use interface and it'll tell you if you're trying to map a command to a key already in use.

You basically just tell it where to find the commands config file for SHIV and it'll read it and show you the list of commands, and when you click on them, the current hotkey assigned to it - if any.

The file for the key commands in SHIV is /data/cfg/commands.cfg <- That's where you tell setkeys to read from.

Hope that helps.

For your situation, you wont find an on/off thing under binoculars -- not how the cfg file works. But it'll tell you what the current keymap to bring up binos are if any. And if none set, you can add your own key-combo to it.

Also, a quick way to check is just open up data/cfg/commands.cfg in a text editor and look for:

[Cmd18]
Name=Binocular_camera
Ctxt=1
Key0=0x42,,"B"
Page=0x27000000,3706
GoBack=Conning_deck_camera

or

[Cmd544]
Name=Adv_Binocular_camera
Ctxt=11
Key0=0x42,,"B"
Page=0x27000000,3706
GoBack=Camera_on_current_unit

And look for the line I marked in bold.

I have no idea why there are two entries for binocular. One is regular and one says adv/advanced. Not sure what the difference is, but one of the two should tell you what Key it's been set to. On my vanilla install of SHIV, in the examples above, my key is B. 0x42 "B". Since your mod has changed that to battle stations, it has hopefully been remapped to something else. If not, the previous program setkeys will help you remap it to whatever you want.

Binoculars in TMO is the mouse scroll wheel or the Tab button if you prefer. :D

Thanks! Scroll wheel and Tab both work like a charm. The crew of the Tautog sends you a heartfelt Attaboy! Now, if only I could find some ships to look at. Just arrived in my patrol area west of Okinawa in the E China Sea, having transited the Pacific from Midway with no radar contacts, no sonar contacts, no visual contacts ... not even crickets chirping ... goodness, but it's a big ocean out there!

Also 'Tab' I think!

Yep, Tab works as well. The Tautog is now up to 10,000 tons from the shipping lanes just north of Formosa, thanks in no small part to the captain now being able to see things without chasing everyone to battle stations.

Thanks to one and all -- the Subsim community is by far the most pleasant and knowledgeable community in the sim world, IMO.
