Rank, Uniform & Insignia Mod (R.U.I.M.) v1.0
for SH4 v1.4 & 1.5

This MOD is done in two (2) Versions (for 1.4 or 1.5) and then there are two (2)
Types of each version choose either Hi-Res or Regular. Both are then divided into three (3)
seperate files, the first is the Basic (main) component, the other two are add on's.

"The only difference between v1.4 and v1.5 of this mod is obviously all refrences to the Germans side should be
overlooked while reading the rest of this description if you have 1.4." (sorry but if I don't say it someone will be confused)

(See Install instructions at bottom they are simple)

Warning the Hi-Res Edition is for high end P.C.'s only.

Basic Mod: (officers only)

Consists of re textured uniforms for all crew of both German and American 3d Characters, The officers (Officers and Warrant Officers) will be wearing rank insignias that will reflect their actual rank if you promote them, the promotion will be reflected on their uniforms. The crew management system plate was changed (it is similarly based on captain Midnites and the RFB team's plate), we did change the Sr. Chief and Master Chief to Warrant Officers and we also used the black and white real pictures from Captain Cox's Mod for your crew. You can still rest easy in the fact that your medals will still be reflected accurately. And not to forget; The officer and enlisted rank insignias in the crew management area will be using the black and gold (for officers) black and red (for enlisted) icons.

The main Mod also includes Midnite's Realistic Decorations (U.S. Navy) v1.2 (SH4 1.5 English) as well as (Midnites) Captain Cox OFFICER+HAT+MOD+FOR+SH4+1.5

The 1.4 Version uses Captain Cox's original Hat Mod.

Enlisted Rank Add on:

For those who want a slight departure from realism and would like to see their crew more uniformed can add this in and your enlisted crew (American and German) will reflect their rank as well and will also change rank insignia's as you promote them.

Awards add on:

1st, NO, the awards do not get added to the charachter as they earn
them in the same way the rank insignia's do, certain ranks wear certain awards and it
is standard. To make it to where the awards worked like the ranks would be a
nightmare. (at least for me.)

For those of you who are in it for the Eye candy or have a dignitary visiting
this is for you. Your officers, Warrant Officers, and Chiefs will (American and
German) be wearing awards on their uniforms

Other things to expect from this mod:

Unfortunately I cannot make it to where this mod can be used with a current
Campaign, so you will have to start a new campaign. However if you have used
John Hamm's Uniform Mod for 1.5 then you should not have to restart a campaign
(same goes for 1.4 to 1.4)
All uniforms for both sides have been retextured with high res textures, many of
the uniforms have been completely re-done to reflect more accurate uniforms and
styles of the day right down to the shoes and belts & buckles.

For others out there that are modders and enjoy going through mod files to see
what is what you will notice there are 2 MARINE.dat files one labled MARINE.dat and
the other labled MARINE2.dat this has been done on purpose due to the new 1.5
MARINE.dat file which before being modified casued several problems for the
german 3D charachters but after modification caused the uniform textures for the
Americans to be rough, so the combination of these two files fixes both issues.

Other stuff:

I cannot give enough thanks to Midnite here I used his Realistic decorations not only becuase of the realism aspect but also because of the amount of effort that he put in to it. I also have to thank him for revamping captain cox hat mod for 1.5. With out him having done this, the hats look completely stupid.

Important Stuff:
With 1 exception (OM) this mod will not get in the way of any other mod unless the mod already manipulates uniforms I.E. RFB, any of the Captain Cox uniform mods, or any mod that had a crew management system plate in it. However adding this mod will not conflict with them it will substitute only some of its files in place of those. BE AWARE if you are using this mod with Operation Monsun, RUIM must be placed after OM.

Known Bugs:

Though I have found no bugs I have noticed that if an enlisted man leans forward or backward his rank insignia will stay in place making it look like he sewed it on in the wrong place. placement of both Officer and enlisted ranks on each shirt was done meticulously as the shirts all places and points in them that would either warp the insignia or cut it off. I understand that some
of these are not high enough (but they not badly placed either) but there is nothing I can do about it.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to E-mail me at jwhokc13@yahoo.com (jwhokc13@yahoo.com) and I will try to help in any way I can. Also if I have not given someone correct credit for something let me know, as when I initially downloaded any of the files that I am using I never intended to use them to make anything to release to the public so I never bothered to pay much attention to credits so I must apologize in advance, and will make any corrections as they are presented to me.

Thank you,
The RUIM team

Installation:

If using JSGME simply add to Mod folder and install per normal instructions and when prompted that it will conflict with other current files (its refering to other uniform mod files) do you wish to continue click yes. and your done. If not Simply Drop the Data Folder into Main SH4 folder and click yes to overwriting files "CAUTION" if using this method I highly recomend that you back up anything you don't want to loose. Although this mod does not overwrite any texture files it will overwrite operational files. You may use any combination of the three folders as long as they are installed in order (the number is in front of the name)

1. You must have the basic Mod installed
2. you may then just use the basic mod by itself or add the enlisted ranks or
add the awards or both but make sure they are in order

(1) RUIM v1.0 for SH4v1.5
(2) RUIM v1.0 for SH4v1.5 Enlisted Ranks add-on

very nice work, thank you for this

my only :hmm: is the german crew member in picture #5, his under shirt with a nazi emblem looks like its printed on it rather than being a sewn on patch. i dont think they printed designs on soldiers uniforms or underwear like that during the war.

also it was my understanding that most sub crews were not staunch nazi supporters and didnt even like the nazi party much. for this reason, i believe they would be more inclined to favor a traditional cross style emblem over any nazi symbols. maybe others with more knowledge can confirm or dispute this.

i dont know if you were trying for realism or not and im not trying to be negative on your work, i still like it even with my doubts on one tiny little part of it.

Thanks for the praise guys. We have spent a lot of time putting this MOD together. I was responsible for all the textures and tried (to my best knowledge) keep historical accuracy. If there are any questions/suggestions about ranks/awards you can either PM or contact me dirtectly at conus00@columbus.rr.com. I have spent COUNTLESS hours on the textures and I'd really like the mod to be as acurate as possible.
Enjoy!

John, thanks a lot for writing the post about step-by step installation, You did a great job!

Here is the actual historical piece of the fabric:

http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/b996109cc57b83b60c541bb155a9cb825g.jpg

Also as far as being "staunch nazi supporters" you are 100% right but I believe that these shirts were standard issues in the Kriegsmarine and had nothing to do with individual's ideology. But I might be wrong.... As I said earlier we strived for maximum historical accuracy and every small thing I have done with textures was (to certain extent) supported by historical documents.

Once again- great work!!!!!!! :yep::up:

Unfortunately that's why the download is about 80MB for low-res and (I think) over 300 MB for hires....

You might want to make another undershirt without the nazi symble on it for our German friends. I believe they can get in trouble if Im not mistaken, for having it in any form on there PC.

conus00
08-27-08, 06:08 PM
That is correct. The swastika is outlawed in Germany and Austria. I will get together with John and see what is his take on the issue. Most likely there's not gonna be "politically correct" version of the mod, though. Fellow subsimmers in Germany and Austria can always delete the "offending" files and then install the mod.

On a personal note (emphasis on 'personal' here, because this opinion in no way represents opinion of RUIM team): I do believe that outlawing swastika in Germany and Austria is ridiculous law anyway. I am NOT supporter of Nazi ideology but can't stand people who are trying to change the history. I have been living under totalitarian regime for 17 years and have seen it done too often... I do believe that if you use the symbol to keep historical accuracy it should be, by all means, allowed. People passing those laws are short sighted, because if you outlaw swastika you may as well do the same thing with sickle and hammer...

Well try it now it's working

Also I have to support Conus00 on the issue of the swastika for a number of reasons, but primarily because of the effort to change it versus the time I desire to spend on it. No offense but it would be easier and take less time for and enduser to replace the file with the original than for us to go in and change it Zip and upload it for each version would take longer than I care to spend on it.

The low resolution version has all the DDS texture files in 1024x1024 pixels.
The high resolution DDSs are 2048x2048 pixels. There is noticeable visual difference.

I am using and enjoying your Mod for 1.4 REG-RES. I thank you for your work. I like it so much that I would love to get the 1.4 HIGH-RES, but have been unable to find a source. I have come to the realization that although it is not dead yet 1.4 is dying. It is to be expected. Until now I have been running both versions, but I have given up on that idea. I feel for the people who are making their mod work available and trying to support both versions. So, I pulled my head from the sand and spent the weekend setting up 1.5 to run with the all the mods I had been using for 1.4 (about 20 some odd mods in all). A lot of tedious trial and error work but it is done. The requestt I made above for hires 1.4 files to be made available is no longer applicable. Great work on this mod. I look forward to any future versions. And now on with the show!

Awards add on:

1st, NO, the awards do not get added to the charachter as they earn
them in the same way the rank insignia's do, certain ranks wear certain awards and it. It is standard. To make it to where the awards worked like the ranks would be a
nightmare. (at least for me.)

For those of you who are in it for the Eye candy or have a dignitary visiting
this is for you. Your officers, Warrant Officers, and Chiefs will (American and
German) be wearing awards on their uniforms

for the second part of your question this mod only deals with the in game 3d Charachters not the charachters while you are in port.

Well it's strange because this bug happenes when I install the mod...

Well I must say this mod is great but I have 2 questions coz I don't understand how all this promotion system works ;)

I gave 2 medals for good job on last mission to my Chief Petty Officer Veeder http://img50.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sh4imgmx7.jpg (http://img50.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sh4imgmx7.jpg) but I can't see any medals on his chest. So how does it work ?

My other problem is that I can't see medals in my medals box when I am in port http://img404.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sh4img2ra5.jpg (http://img404.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sh4img2ra5.jpg) I have installed all 3 files, v 1.5. I started new campaign too...

Okay hmmm this is a tough one... you see when it comes to the medals aspect of the game I incorporated another Mod into my Mod, and to this point your the first person I have had have an issue with this... try this download a medal realism mod add it in directly after RUIM and see what happens... now you have to keep in mind though you will have to start a new campaign.

BTW thank Wilcke you comments a greatly apreciated to all of us that worked on RUIM!

If his country doesnt sell it, his country doesnt sell it. That means he wasnt going to buy it under any circumstances, and anyone who normally doesnt have access to the game who manages to obtain it, and post on these forums adds to the community and potential further customers.

Its one thing to avoid spending money through pirating. Its another to pirate a game because you cannot get it any other way.

For instance, I have German friends who pirate a lot of "banned" games, simply because they do not believe in censorship.

That is not the point.

SS is a community that does not condone piracy under any given set of circumstances.

To flag it up here only raises the possibility of SS reputation being brought into disrepute.

I installed the Hi-res R.U.I.M. for SH4 v1.4. No problems to report.

Well, I love it. It makes the game way more interesting.

The uniforms were very well done considering the models supplied by the game, and the high resolution textures are definately a plus.

Just one thing with the mod, sometimes there are Chief Petty Officers wearing Officer covers (hats). Is anybody else getting this problem?

Nonetheless, this is great mod.

Now all we need is a modern-day version of R.U.I.M.

You know, like garrison caps, ballcaps, coveralls, updated version of dungarees and khakis, and maybe even some NWU's for good measure.

Anyways, thanks for this great mod!

I have the hi-resolution v1.5 R.U.I.M. Mod installed for SH4 v1.5, and the crew members don't have eyes at times.

Most of the time they do, but sometimes they don't.

That has nothing to do with this mod.

It's awesome. (although the german stuff might be a little too authentic...) nevertheless. great. spend more time on deck and brigde now and my Patrols tend to last longer since i dont fast forward that often. unfortunately most of my officers tend to wear their shirts, not uniform.

Eyeproblem is gone when installing eyepatch after Ruim, but reoccurs when done the other way.

seems to work with TMO + RSRD + OM, or RFB. at least here.

Yes, this is a great mod. Thank you John W. Hamm and conus00.

Nisgeis recently released an 'Eye Patch for Missing Eyes and Staring Crew' which is a must-have for me as the crews eyes going back behind their eye sockets is something that really bothered me. It caused me to stick with SH3 and kept me from playing SH4 except in passing on rare occasion. I am thinking that if you are a TMO or RFB user that the Eye Patch effects R.U.I.M. in some way or another since it installs a MARINE.dat file and removes the MARINE2.dat file, which are both in R.U.I.M.

Any chance you guys might be able to colaborate with Nisgeis and get the mods incorporated with each other?

Whatever the case, this is an awesome mod you guys and Thanks! :)

Cheers

I'm not sure how another mod would take out the Marine2 file. that just seems odd to me. The Marine 2 file was a brain child of mine and for the life of me I can't remember the details of how or why it works (I haven't played or kept up with SH4 in almost a year.) At any rate it has something to do with compatibilities issues with the uboat add on and the in game crew 3d. Some how or another I screwed up and figured out that putting the marine.dat from uboats and the marine.dat from the original SH4 in at the same time fixed model rendering issues If I am not mistaken (but I may very well be) Marine.dat is the original from vanilla SH4 and Marine2.dat is the Marine.dat file from Uboat. What the problem might be is that Nisgeis Mod may use the Marine.dat from uboat and since it is named the same it is essentially makes it to were there are two of the exact same Marine.dat files. And may be what is causing the instability that having the two in there together originally fixed???? I have no idea but it is just a thought. One of the main reasons I used both Marine.dat files the way I did was because I have no concept on how to edit a .DAT file and on top of that I had no way of knowing what files in the Marine.DAT were needed or not so I had no way to combine them into one file. and using them both at the same time worked just great. But it would appear that Nisgeis has some concept on how to mod the .dat file and if he could figure what Marine.dat has in it that Marine2.dat does not (or vice versa) and then mod the changes taht his eye patch also has in to it it may just work. Another solution could be Take his Marine.dat and name it Marine3.dat and then place Ruim last and I bet that would work (actually that may be the best and easiest way) Logic would dictate it any way. I mean if I can have both of the other Marine.dat files in there and the computer games clearly reads both of those otherwise we would still have the 3d glitches that were in there before (I.E. weird shaded uniforms and German crews missing half their body's....it's all starting to come back to me as I write this) any try my last option first then if that does not work then see if he could edit those files as I suggested.....I certainly have no idea how.

Is there any way to install this so that I don't get the German in the undershirt? I have no problems with the swastika at all, I know the shirt is authentic, and I have even replaced my German Naval and National flags. My problem is that U Boat crews of the time have a reputation for being gaunt, pale, skinny etc.. I have a boat full of bodybuilders with tans! lol The texture looks great, I just don't think the muscular model looks right in the setting, especially when at times you can see 4+ on one watch.

Other then that it looks fantastic all around.

The models were not something that we edited. just the uniforms, so if I'm not mistaken that is just part of the vanilla game.

Hello, this is very nice mod, absolutely perfect. And if I may join (even though I'm late) the discussion about historical symbols, sickle and hammer are not banned because the history is written by the winners, not the loosers. That's why you can still buy soviet flag and nothing happens, but you are accused of being a nazi when you have only head with german helmet on it on a t-shirt. I don't want to annoy someone, but that's my opinion.

Hi Nisgeis, I was looking for an uniform mods and this was the only one I've found, should have checked the date. :) I guess this mod is not included with TMO because the clothes are rendered much better with RUIM installed, with TMO (and I guess stock too) there's a gradient/banding (not sure about the right term), like the shirt on this picture:

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/9042/bandingb.jpg

That's what I was trying to fix, but just like an old car once you fix one problem, some other problem shows up! :DL I tried to copy only the textures from RUIM but the banding was still present. I guess it's something to do with the MARINE.dat file and I have no clue what to look for to fix that.

Nisgeis
05-19-10, 04:25 PM
Yes, I'm sure that was fixed by someone... It's to do with there being some extra code that isn't picked up by S3D and whatever it does it smoothes the uniforms out. The smooth uniforms are from 1.5 and the banded ones are from 1.4. TMO used both files and so everything is duplicated twice and for whatever rteson it choses the banded models with the staring fix. Someone posted the exra hex bits that was responsible, but I can't find it. Too long ago now.

Nisgeis, thanks so much for the tip! After searching with all keywords I could think of I found it buried in this thread:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1200611&postcount=112

It was a fix by Captain America. I used a hex editor and fixed the TMO file and it works great now! No weird looking eyes and smooth better looking uniforms! Resurrecting this thread at least solved my problem. :)
