It's hard to believe it's that time of year again, AND it's the third year of the thread! We really need a prize for the person that picks the superbowl winner:hmm: now. On a somber note, my best football watching buddy, is no longer with me to lounge on the couch and eat buffalo wings all day. RIP Niki:cry: Rocky will carry the torch.

Get your nachos, Pizza, buff'lo wings, and beer ready...

The same thread rules apply, but if you are new to the thread, here's the basic rules:

1. Anything goes, bring your trash talking here, but no personal attacks. IE: Boy those Dallas Cowboys sure do suck! Not MemberX sure is a big fat jerk for liking the Cowboys.

2. THIS IS NOT A SOCCER THREAD:huh: . Drunk, unruley soccer fans stumbling into this thread will have their soccoer balls bit off by Rocky McBee.

The Storyline:

All is chaotic in the football universe...

1. Which Manning Bro will be going to the superbowl this year?
2. Will Darth Brady and Emperor Belichek make a comeback after last year's tragic end.

So does anyone remember why the American game is called "football"?

kranz

90% of game time the ball is in hands. So they call it "football".They are Americans.

Platapus

The current version of American football agrees with your statement. These days the ball is advanced down field through running or passing - with a dearth of using the foot.

But when the game was in its early years (late 1800's to about the late 1920's) there were two primary ways of advancing the ball down field. The first was the run which has stayed pretty much the same to current times.

The other was kicking the ball. The Drop-kick was the primary way of moving the ball down field for long distances. This should not be confused with the term Drop-goal which is scoring a field goal using the drop kick technique. Many football references use the two terms as being the same but in actuality they are similar but different.

The forward pass was not legal in football until the 1906 rules. Even then, the Drop-Kick continued to be the preferred way to move the ball down field.

As the forward pass became more accepted, the ball was physically modified, in the 1930's, to make it easier and more stable for throwing. These modifications greatly hindered the ability of any of the backs to Drop-kick the ball. So more and more backs moved to passing vs kicking the ball.

The forward pass is vastly more accurate than the Drop-Kick.

This is why the game was called Football -- there was a lot more kicking, with the foot, in the early years.

The Drop-goal is still a legal way of scoring in Football albeit rarely used.

Any idea when the last time a Drop-goal was scored in the NFL?

Veteran champions like Farve always seem to have a difficult time calling finally it quits. Maybe it'd be better for him to spend his declining years with another team instead of tarnishing his Green Bay record?

Platapus

You would think that Favre would have enough money to retire on and give him the opportunity of doing what he wants. Either do nothing if that's what he wants or perhaps coaching/advising at the various levels of football.

I think it would be so cool to retire and be a coach for a school. Could you imagine having a highschool or community college with Favre as the coach! Wow talk about getting people interested.

That's the "problem" I think. What Farve wants to be is an NFL quarterback, and he has enough talent and experience to get it.

Manning is hurting from some kind of infection ... he no play yet till the last game maybe.

Go Chargers this is their Super bowl year ... I pick the San Diego Chargers to win the AFC West, all of their play off games and the Super Bowl in February 2009.

Awards can be sent to geetrue somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.

By the way Dallas Cowboys suck and I would put that tight end on the Cowboys team way ahead of Favre for the biggest attention getter.

The San Diego Chargers, two-time defending champions of the AFC West, and the Dallas Cowboys, defending champs of the NFC East, will open the preseason on Saturday, Aug. 9 at Qualcomm Stadium at 7:00 p.m. PDT. It is the 2008 preseason opener for both teams.

Bah, I live in ore-gone, so I have to endure hearing how great he is. Ever since career has tanked, he has dropped of the face of the earth here.

Last year, I heard someone say how joey was a better QB than montana.:rotfl: Welcome to Ore-gone sports. He's a nice guy as an individual, but when it comes to football I am sick of hearing how great he is. Highschool, I play for the Mcminn Central Chargers, this here is my Juinor year. I kinda had a boo boo in spring practice that required the experties of a surgical team to repair. I play mostly offensive gaurd, on either side of the line, but they throw me in at defensive tackle as well. We was the Reigon 3 3A champions this last season, but we lost the first round of the playoffs by 3 points. Wish us better luck this year! :arrgh!:

The Patriots have several. Mike Vrabel in particular:

10 career receptions in regular season and playoff games, all going for touchdowns. He has caught eight passes for 11 yards and eight touchdowns in the regular season and two passes for three yards and two touchdowns in the playoffs.

OK, lemme rephrase that. I don't know of many pro teams that have that many players that play both ways on a regular basis:D

Not that they're looking to be worth paying too much attention to this year, but what about Mike Smith naming Matt Ryan the starting quarterback? Being the eternal Falcon hopeful, I like the move based on what I've seen of him.

Chargers played good enough in the second half to win, but that no fumble call was too much.

The Chargers were holding a 38-31 lead at Denver’s Invesco Field Sunday with 1:17 remaining when Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler had the ball slip out of his hand. Tim Dobbins fell on the loose ball, but an official’s whistle had blown the play dead. Instead of the Chargers celebrating a late goal-line stand, Denver got two more chances and escaped with a win.

“On the last play, it was clearly a fumble,” Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner said. “(Referee) Ed (Hochuli) came over to me and said he blew it. That to me is not acceptable. This is a high-level performance game. That’s not acceptable to have a game decided on that play. Our guys fought to come back. They competed in all phases and it’s just disappointing to have that kind of performance spoiled by that call.”

All that on top of the first quarter mis-hap:

On the Chargers’ second play of the game, Bolts wide receiver Chris Chambers caught a short pass from Rivers. Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey got a hold of the ball, and although Chambers appeared to have dual possession which would have kept the ball with the Chargers, the play was ruled an interception.
The Chargers challenged the play, but the replay equipment at Invesco Field mysteriously was not functioning at the time, so officials were unable to review it and the call stood. That left Denver with a short field and it took them just five plays to go 29 yards. Michael Pittman’s one-yard run gave the Broncos an early 7-0 lead.

NFL referee graded down after blown call in Denver

NEW YORK (AP) — Ed Hochuli's acknowledgement that he erred on a call late in Sunday's San Diego-Denver game will mean lower grades for one of the NFL's highest profile referees.

"Officials are held accountable for their calls. They are graded on every play of every game," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. "Ed has been an outstanding official for many years, but he will be marked down for this call. Under our evaluation system, an official's grades impact his status for potentially working the playoffs and ultimately whether or not he is retained."

The play occurred with the Broncos at the Chargers 1-yard-line in the final minute. Denver quarterback Jay Cutler dropped back to pass, the ball slipped out of his hands, bounced off the grass and into the arms of San Diego linebacker Tim Dobbins.

Hochuli ruled it an incomplete pass. Replay ruled it a fumble, but it was spotted at the 10-yard line, where the ball hit the ground, and given to Denver because the rules did not permit possession to be awarded to San Diego because the whistle had blown.

Denver went on to score, convert a 2-point conversion and win 39-38.

Dunno :hmm: Maybe his " legend " status is catching up ( and has been for a time ) with his ability to play the game the way he once could. Thus we see stuff like you mentioned.

Still hard to knock the guy though, with his consecutive games streak and still playing the game at a relatively high level at his age.

A record in progress for Bret Favre:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/09/25/favre.ap/index.html?eref=netzero

Favre wasn't available to the media before practice, but said Wednesday he was "doing everything I can to get ready" for the Jets' game against Arizona on Sunday.
Favre has started 256 straight regular-season games, an NFL record for quarterbacks, and neither he nor Mangini has seemed concerned the streak was in jeopardy.

Well am finally back from tour and i turn up in a house with no feckin sky tv!!:damn::damn:
So i have to wait a few weeks to final watch my first game of the season. ( i doubt a few minutes of the 4th Q of the Cowboys, Eagles game counts.)

I have watched in dismay from the desert as my team the Pats first lose the mighty Brady for the season then scrape by the Chiefs. Then 2 weeks later lose to Miami?:doh:

After catching up with a little news since i have been back in the land of the living it seems that we are stuck with backup Matt for the season.

So how do the other guys that frequent this thread rate the Pats chances of making it to the Playoffs with out Brady?

Also if he is about how does August rate this years Pats as he is the only other Pats fan i know on this forum?

Other than that it is great to be back and i look forward to a great season of NFL. That is when i eventually get my hands on sky tv.

Welcome back!

To answer your question, the Pats are definitely hurting so I expect that their performance will not be very consistent. They will win some that people expect them to loose and loose some people expect them to win. Then again i would have said the same thing about two games after Bledsoe was knocked out for the season so you never really know.

Chargers vs New Orleans Saints sunday 10am pst live from London, England

Go Chargers :smug:

Matchup

For the first time in their history, the San Diego Chargers will play a regular-season game on foreign soil when they meet the New Orleans Saints in an NFL International Series game at London’s Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is schedule for 10 a.m. PT (5:00 p.m. in London). CBS will televise the game back to the States with their top announcing team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms calling the action.

Sunday’s game takes on added importance for both teams as each come in at 3-4 and off discouraging losses. San Diego fell on the road in Buffalo, 23-14, and New Orleans was outscored 30-7 by the Carolina Panthers. The game takes on even more importance for New Orleans, which forsook a home game at the Superdome and will be the home team at Wembley Stadium.

The Chargers caught a break when the Denver Broncos fell to the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football, keeping the Chargers just a game out in the AFC West race. After the Saints game and a bye, San Diego will return home and play five of its final eight games at Qualcomm Stadium, including a Dec. 28 season-ending rematch with Denver.

International Travel

Though the team has never played an international regular-season game, the Chargers have played outside the United States four times in the preseason, including a game in Sydney, Australia; two in Tokyo, Japan, and one in Berlin, Germany.

The Series

The Chargers and Saints have played only nine times and San Diego leads the series, 7-2, including a 43-17 win in the last meeting in San Diego in 2004. The Chargers have won four of the last five in the series.
The Starting Quarterbacks

Two quarterbacks whose careers will forever be linked, Philip Rivers and Drew Brees, will lead their respective teams on Sunday. San Diego’s starting quarterback from 2002-05, Brees posted a 30-29 record, including playoffs, and led the Chargers to an AFC West title in 2004. He signed with New Orleans as a free agent in 2006. When Brees finished his career in San Diego, he was the franchise’s all-time leader in career completion percentage (.622) and second in career passer rating (84.9).

Rivers took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2006 and has led the Bolts to a 30-13 record, back-to-back AFC West Championships, a 2-2 mark in the postseason and an appearance in the 2007 AFC Championship Game. Rivers’ career numbers heading into Sunday’s game include 702 of 1,144 passing (.614) for 8,385 yards with 60 touchdowns and 30 interceptions for a career passer rating of 90.3

This season, Rivers and Brees rank first and sixth, respectively, in NFL passer rating. Rivers has completed 124 of 194 (.639) for 1,697 yards with a league-high 16 TDs and only five INTs for a lofty rating of 108.5. Brees meanwhile has completed 180 of 263 (.684) for 2,224 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven picks for a 98.5 rating figure. Brees leads the NFL this season in attempts, completions and yards.

I believe this: I would rather play with 10 people and just get penalized all the way until we got to do something else, rather than play with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold-out to be a part of this team. It is more about them than it is about the team.

Cannot play with them.
Cannot win with them.
Cannot coach with them.
Can't do it. I want winners.

He sounds a whole lot like the guy we've got coaching for us now, except Singletary has to deal with it in the middle of the season. It's gonna be difficult for him to clean house during the season. At least Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff had the entire off-season to clean house and instill the team attitude.

Now, if we could just ge the refs to get it right (or change the replay/challenge system):nope:

Great game in Philly up until about 2:28 left in the 4th quarter, 6 points behind, on our 40 yard line, when the ref "thought" he saw our punt returner touch the ball. No time outs left, so no challenge available.

Just drove 80 yards to get a touchdown, got the defense to get a 3 and out and the ref had to blow the call on the punt return. Well, they played a great game against another good team and were in the game to the very end (well almost the very end), so I guess I have to be happy with that. It's great to have a team again, instead of a bunch of egos running around the field.

On a bad note, MeAngelo failed to run his mouth before the game, so no joy in having him eat his words, but he did, at least, get burned for a TD.

The Salary Cap makes a difference in this, they brought this into the NHL a few years ago also, and it has and will continue to level the playing field there as well. Anyway, back to the NFL: a team like Green Bay has an opportunity to compete against some of the larger market clubs like the Giants, Chicago or your squad, Atlanta.

You ain't just whistlin' Dixie, RDP. If there was ever a classic depressing season, last year was it. Vick goes to jail, head coach (won't mention his cowardly name) creeps off in the dead of night with 3 games left to go in the season to go back to college and then "The Big Tuna" plays us like a fiddle to get more money out of Miami (who's doing a major turn around this year, too). I seriously thought about donating all my Falcon gear to charity (which would have ticked my in-laws off big time, since they give it to me for Christmas every year:D).

There is this guy from Green Bay (Packers fan) driving to Chicago and this guy from Chicago (Bears fan) driving to Green Bay. In the middle of the night with no other cars on the road they hit each other head on and both cars go flying in different directions. The Packer fan manages to climb out of his car and surveys the damage he looks at his twisted car and says "man I am lucky to be alive". Likewise the Bears fan scrambles out of his car and looks at the wreckage and he too says to himself, "I can't believe I survived this wreck".
The Bear fan walks over to the Packer fan and says "Hey man I think this is a sign from god that we should put away our petty differences and live as friends instead of rivals". The Packer fan thinks for a moment and says "you know your absolutely right we should be friends lets see what else survived this wreck". So the bear fan pops his trunk and finds a bottle full of Jack Daniels. He says to the packer fan "I think this is another sign from god that we should toast to our newfound understanding and friendship".

The packer fan says "your damn right" he takes the bottle and starts sucking down Jack Daniels. After putting away nearly half the bottle the Bear fan hands it back to the Bear fan and says "your turn". The bear fan twists the cap back on the bottle and says "nah I think I will wait for the cops to show up".

Yeah, the Ravens future looks good. However, our list of walking wounded is growing. Flacco has one hell of an arm and is cool under fire. Your QB is much the same. Brady's replacement is looking for a permanant job. He just might get it. The Steelers are tough this year on the Ravens. We do play them again but on our playground this time. Last year when Pitt came to Baltimore we sacked the QB about 7 times. We need a repeat and that will put us on top for the playoffs. Right now we are in wildcard territory. I feel good about that with our rookie QB and coach. Still a lot of football left, time will tell. Good luck with the Steelers. Those steel city boys are tough.

This will be a great game :yep::roll: The Steelers looked good yesterday,
this is the time of the year where they tend to turn it up
a notch ( cold, wet, etc. ).

Something is wrong with the NFL schedules that pit the AFC against the NFC

The AFC should just play the AFC snd the NFC do the same just playing NFC tteams, except during pre-season for grudge matches with teams like the Cowboys and the Texans and of course the Super Bowl.

Why? Because they already have the Denver Broncos listed as the AFC west winner (not the leader, but the winner). Yet they still have four games left and two games left are within the AFC west division.

San Diego Chargers play the Denver Broncos in the last game of the season Dec 28 th.

If San Diego can win thursday night against Oakland in San Diego they would be 3-1 in the division and then beat KC in KC Dec 14th that would make them 4-1 in the AFC west going into the last game with Denver, right?

San Diego then wins the last game against Denver, in San Diego making them the winner of the AFC west at 5-1 with Denver being at 4-2 with me so far.

Chargers lose due to the schedule being to filled with NFC teams on their way up leaving the real winner of the AFC west at home watching the play offs.

We (meaning the Chargers) can still have bragging rights ... never give up.

Go Chargers

Got to say i was a little miffed when i worked out that the two different conference teams play each other in the regular season. I just thought the teams in each conference just played each other and the top 4 in each went on too the playoffs.
How wrong was i!!

Anyways on a side note was wondering if anyone had any info getting NFL tickets.
My wife and i are planning a trip to the States next year and want to take in two game. The two teams we want to see are the Pats (my team) and the Bears (the wifes team.)
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Get on line for ticket brokers. Ticket Masters is the biggest I know of. At any rate, you can order and pay on line. Then when you get to the stadium, they have 'will call' windows were you can pick up the tickets. Have your ID and the credit card you used to purchase the tickets with you.

When I went to see the Yankees earlier this year, we ordered ours online as well,
the only difference to the above is that we printed our tickets at home and used them to get in. Pretty slick really. I think we got them direct from the team's site.

Ravens and Steelers next weekend. Watch the Steelers throw headsets and helmets:p It will be a tough game for both. The defense on both sides is very tough.

It should be a great one.

Did you catch Ray Lewis being interviewed by Jerome Bettis on ESPN this weekend? They were talking about the history between the two teams, etc.
