Although they overdid it somewhat, it was neat to see the respect they have for each other after years of lining up against one another on the field.

The sign of a great player in my book :yep:

Bum call RDP at the end. I was right at the end zone and watched the "touchdown" that will live in infamy. The ball did not break the line. They should have gone with the original call. No matter, the squealers probably would have scored anyway. Not to mention we had several opportunities in the red zone to close the deal. We did not deliver. But, we are still in playoff contention and I'm pleased with our players. Flacco is a young budding QB. He will do well. We can only get better from the experience against the toughest defense in the league.

Opening madhouse show to start the game:

My dad took me to the games back in the late 70's. Back then is was Memorial Stadium and the Baltimore Colts. My very first game I watched had OJ Simpson playing:o. Anyway, I remember those games with my dad and freezing my butt off. I want my girls to remember going to sporting events like I do.

Yeah, I hope to take my three boys to an NHL game in the not so distant future, for reasons you mentioned.

The only thing that still bugs me about it is the amount of
money that professional athletes make, but when you strip away all of the bull****
and you just have the game, it's still a great experience\thing.

The reason hockey will always be #1 in my eyes, proud to be a life long Black Hawks fan, and of the NHL, impeach Bettman PLEASE!

In the middle of a grueling six game road trip where a very young hockey team is away from home, the third game of the trip ends late on a cold Canadian Saturday night. This is the only break on the trip and the three days between games allow them the only break to get back home in their own beds for a couple of days before going back on the road. A scheduled commercial flight waits for them at Toronto 's International Airport for the short flight home; they could be home by midnight. This plane departs on schedule, but without a single member of the hockey team.

Back in the locker room a vote is taken after the game was complete, and a unanimous decision is made by this young team to skip this flight and stay one more day. They make arrangements to check back in the hotel and on a frozen Sunday morning charter two buses that have no heat and begin a journey two hours straight north into a sparsely inhabited Canada, but where hockey is its passion. They arrive at their destination to the surprise of the teams general manager who is there attending his fathers wake.

After a few emotional hours, this team boards the buses and head back for a two-hour trip back to Toronto . On the way they ask the drivers to stop in a tiny Canadian town because they are hungry. To the shock of the patrons and workers at this small hockey town McDonald's, a professional team walks out of two rickety buses and into the restaurant, which just happens to have pictures of two members of this team on its wall. The patrons know every single one of these players by sight being fanatic fans of hockey in these parts. One can only imagine their amazement of the locals seeing and entire professional hockey team sit down and have a meal in their tiny little town in the middle of a hockey season. After a while they board the buses and catch their same flight 24 hours later, giving one day to their general manager.

Have I made this up, is this an excerpt from some fictional book? No this a true story of the Blackhawks last Saturday night and they decided to attend Dale Tallon's fathers funeral. Its amazing that such a good story can be found nowhere on the internet, and not even mentioned in the Chicago papers. Had one of the Blackhawks got into a fight and punched some drunken loser in a Toronto bar it would be plastered all over papers and the television. This being said, its hard to imagine any professional football, basketball or baseball team doing this, but the members of the Blackhawks claim any "hockey" team would have done this.

That's quite the story.

Hockey comes with the territory here. I have three boys, two play hockey. The other cannot because he has Cerebral Palsy, but loves the game all the same. I coach the two who do play and although it is a lot of work, I would not want it any other way. It's great to be on the ice with them.

There is nothing like going to the rink on a Saturday morning in the midst of a cold Canadian Winter.

Blackhawks Player Sopel Opens His Heart and Home

Mary Frances Bragiel, WBBM Newsradio 780 Reporting
CHICAGO -- More than a dozen military families associated with the Illinois chapter of Operation Homefront will be without their spouse this holiday season but not without the essentials. And the Chicago Blackhawks are to thank..

Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel and his wife Kelly will open their west suburban home today to nearly 20 families and Blackhawk players for a holiday celebration.

Each player has committed to spending $600 on each family for food and toys and at the same time get a chance to know one another.

Sopel says he can sympathize with military families who will wake up on Christmas day knowing that a loved one is overseas.

The Blackhawks have paired with the Illinois chapter of Operation Homefront for this effort

Sorry, I used to go to one Brewer/Sox game once a year. My grandpa owned a tavern and would have a trip every year to County stadium. As a kid, nothing beat a fella in Leaderhosen (sp) slide down from the humongous wooden keg in center field and the release of balloons everytime a Brewer jacked a homer. As a Cub fan, that was quality entertainment! Got to see a few future HOFer's play live Yount, Molitor....

I just wish Scumbag, I mean Selig would have left enough alone and kept Harvey's Wallbangers where they belonged, the AL.Yeah, I can relate to that. I'm no fan of Selig's management of baseball.

On the other hand, I can hardly watch AL baseball. The DH just kills it for me. It just kills bench and bullpen management, IMO. I'd wish they'd either get rid of the DH altogether or lower the roster sizes of the AL to compensate.

It does suck, though, that the Brewers/Cubs rivalry have caught some people in the middle. My grandmother was a huge Cubs fan and I watched and listened to their games growing up. A sort of dual-allegience. Now it seems to have gotten bitter. ;)

I dunno about the Pack-Lion game. Both teams are only playing for pride (Lions trying to avoid 0-16 and the Pack trying to avoid being the only team the Lions beat). Both sport AWFUL defense, but the Pack have a better offense and thus *should* win.

I don't think they cover a 10.5 point spread, however...

Will the Vikes earn their playoff spot, back in, or miss out entirely? Hmmmm....
They should be able to beat a disinterested Giant team. Houston certainly has the passing game to beat Chicago.

But the Vikings are playing a game that matters, and they seem to have a problem there.

Aramike

It's just amazing to see what a bunch of guys can do when they actually play as a team.

On a side note, does any one else feel (like I do) that the method of selecting teams for the playoffs should be changed? I'm beginning to think that the teams with the best records should be chosen regardless of who wins what division.

Pennington got his butt handed to him quite a few times. Picked off like an orange from the tree. The Ravens force the turn-over and I hope they continue it with the Titans. Next week should be tough. However, the Ravens defense is examplary. Sorry to see the Falcons go and it was an exciting season for them. As a team, I would be very proud of the season they had. Not a big fan of the format either, but not sure if extending it 15 minutes could solve the issue. What if they are still tied after 15 minutes, either via both teams scoring or not scoring at all?

I guess in the end it does come down to teams having a well balanced defence and offence. It's like your lad Ray Lewis has said ( and many others ): " defence wins championships ".

Yeah, I think (my opinion) that no matter what they do, someone will not like the format. I'm old school, I love the do-or-die sudden death format. It really rewards teams with potent defenses, like you mention, the Ray Lewis led Ravens. They could lose the coin flip, start OT on defense, and win the game for the team... their opponents might be wise to decline to receive the ball.

I could be open to a restriction on FGs in OT, maybe come up with a 30 yd max, so teams can't get the kickoff, a couple first downs and then kick a 50 yarder to win... of course, if they miss, the other team gets great field position... :hmm: nah, I like OT just as it is :) Both teams had 4 quarters to win the game when they had the ball. Anyone know what the stats are for coin toss winners scoring first in OT?

If it's way above 50% then that would be a valid justification for changing the sudden death rule imo.

Games should be won by superior performance, not by a lucky toss of a coin.

Digital_Trucker

From http://www.maa.org/mathland/mathtrek_11_08_04.html

Football's Overtime Bias

For 30 years, the National Football League (NFL) has mandated sudden-death overtime to decide games that are tied after 60 minutes of play. The first team to score in overtime wins the game. If neither team scores at the end of 15 minutes of overtime, the game ends in a tie.

A coin flip determines which team gets the ball first. The winner of the toss can choose whether the team wants to receive the ball and begin an offensive series or pick a goal to defend.

Many people have the perception that whichever team wins the coin toss and chooses to receive the ball typically goes on to score and win the game, often on the first possession. This perception has led to calls for changes in the overtime rule. In fact, the NFL has suggested an alternative: The first team to score six points in overtime wins the game.

Total no. of overtime games (1974–2003) 365
Both teams had at least one possession 261 (72 %)
Team won toss and won game 189 (52 %)
Team lost toss and won game 160 (44 %)
Team won toss and drove for winning score 102 (28 %)
Games ending in a tie 15 (5 %)

Overtime games in 2002 26
Both teams had at least one possession 15 (58 %)
Team won toss and won game 16 (62 %)
Team lost toss and won game 9 (35 %)
Team won toss and drove for winning score 10 (38 %)
Games ending in a tie 1 (3 %)

Overtime Games in 2003 23
Both teams had at least one possession 16 (70 %)
Team won toss and won game 12 (52 %)
Team lost toss and won game 11 (48 %)
Team won toss and drove for winning score 6 (26 %)
Games ending in a tie 0 (0 %)

The data appear to support the notion that the football team scoring first in sudden-death overtime is usually the one that had won the coin toss and received the ball.

Interestingly, the cumulative data hide the effect of a rule change that occurred in 1994, when kickoffs were moved back 5 yards to the 30-yard line. Since 1994, nearly one-third of overtime games have been won on the first possession by the team that received the ball first. In the first 20 seasons, under the old rule, slightly more than one-quarter of the games were won in this fashion.

A recent analysis by economist Richard E. Hawkins of Pennsylvania State University in DuBois confirms that these differences are statistically significant.

"The analysis finds with 99.99 % certainty that the [coin] flip has made a difference in the outcome of the game over the last 10 years," he concludes. "But for the period prior to those 10 years, the coin flip cannot be shown to be important."

Any time, sir. I hadn't even considered what effect moving the kickoff back had on the stats. I do kind of favor the first team to 6 points idea. At least that makes kicking that 50 yarder a little less tempting (unless, of course, you've already kicked one in the OT).

If you consider the 33 yard line good field position, then you have a point. Of course, if you have a good defense, then the 33 isn't such great field position. There's always a downside to every approach.

Same thing happened on NFL Today on CBS ... It was the sunday morning show the day after the Charger game. Most of the host football experts were in awe that Manning and the Colts could lose a game to a lowly team like the Chargers.

If the Colts had of won in OT they would not have even brought up the subject.

Manning winner of MVP of 2008 season, seven times elected to the pro bowl loses the big one, because of the Chargers winning the coin toss ... BS

They lost period and the running game of the Chargers and the special teams punting the ball behind the ten yard line several times helped a lot.

The Chargers won and may very well go on to win it all, because they are a good team. They've been in a playoff mood for the last four games of the season.

Anyone know what the stats are for coin toss winners scoring first in OT?

Tom Dempsey's shoe.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/88/Tom_dempsey.jpg (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/88/Tom_dempsey.jpg)

"We should have had the lead, but we were trailing 17-16 with just seconds left in the final quarter. The Lions had kicked a field goal to go ahead, and Don Heinrich, our offensive coordinator, called downstairs and told the coaches to have me get ready because we were going to play for a field goal. I don't think anyone had a 63-yarder in mind, but I knew all along we were going to try for a long one. Our plan was to receive the kickoff and get out of bounds. Then the plan was to throw a sideline, pass to get out of bounds again and stop the clock, and send the field goal team out.
That's exactly what happened. Out we came. By now, the stadium was half-empty. A lot of people had left thinking we had lost the game. That was one of our smaller crowds of the year, but I think 300,000 people have claimed to have been at that game.
We lined it up, and I didn't even look up to see how far away we were. I didn't want to know. I just wanted to put my head down and kick it as hard as I could. A lot of people probably didn't think we could do it; the Lions probably didn't think we could do it."

I was there in the upper Steel deck of Tulane Stadium just below the press box. My Dad was in the Press box because he covered the games for WDSU Channel 6 and the tickets were comps. Many people were leaving because the Lions had just kicked a field goal to take the lead 17-16. Even more people started to leave when the ensuing kick off sailed through the end zone for a touch back with just 11 seconds left on the clock. Billy Kilmer threw a perfect down and out to stop the clock with 2 seconds on the saints own 45. This sent more fans to the exits because the Saints were lining up for a 63 yard field goal! Not me. At 15 years old, I was an optimist and my Dad had told me earlier that year that Dempsey had the leg to break the record for the longest field goal. The kick was perfect. The goal post could have been 6 feet wide and Tom still would have drilled it. The fans went nutz! The river of people in the exits reversed course and the stadium filled back up. The Upper deck was rocking from the stomping of thousands of feet(in the upper deck at Tulane stadium you could make the stadium shake if every one pounded their feet at the same time on the steel deck). Tom not only kicked the longest field goal in history but he helped the Saints win for only the second time that year.

The Chargers are still a better team ... one flukie tipped pass after a 64 yard kick off run back cost the entire third quarter coupled with a flukie punt that lands on a Charger helmet trying to block for the run back, plus only 15 yards rushing without LT.

Excuses true ... at least we made it that far. I'm happy ...

I actually feel free of not having a team to cheer for this week, but if I did ... surely the Baltimore Ravens with a rookie coach and a rookie quaterback would be my favorites for the Super Bowl.

Steelers, but the way Arizona is playing you never know....
Should be an interesting game.

Steelers all the way. They have a tough passing game to beat. Chargers could not handle it and either could the Ravens. I knew that would be our demise....with exception of some crappy ref calls and of course Flacco getting picked off. Rothelsberger has good protection and friggin 10 minutes in the pocket to find a receiver. When he gets hurried, he just flicks it out and sometimes the ball is just pushed out only to find a team mate to catch it. I predict a blow out.

On the lighter side, I'm happy with the Ravens. A number 6 seed playing the number 2 seed for the championship. That means a lot. Next year will be all that much better. How long until next season starts? :hmm: Thus ends a very exciting season here in good ole'Bawlmar. Hon.........

They had a good year, Flacco's experience these playoffs will serve him well going into next year.

The Ravens need to work on their defense starting line. Although they are number 2 in defense, these guys are getting quite beat up. Other than that, we loose a coach to the Jets and that is another avenue that the Ravens need to walk.

Super Bowls are funny ... a long hard road to get there for sure.

1. The game is not in Pittsburgh with the well known bad weather factor
2. Arizona enjoyed all of their playoff games and were very entertaining with good calls and plays.
3. Kurt Warner has charisma
4. I like it when Vegas is wrong ...

Arizona Cards go for it ... winning in overtime would be nice :yep:

P.S. Did you know that there has never been an overtime game in Super Bowl history.

It was a great game. I was rooting for the Cardinals although the pool I got into at work gave me the #'s Pitt 7 and AZ 3. Heres the breakdown

1st quarter paid 550
2nd quarter paid 900
3rd quarter paid 700
and the 4th was 1300

reverse score was 250 per quarter...you can do the math.

I really dont know how the Steelers defensive co-ordinator missed that. They were poking holes in that middle for a long while.

Not since Bon and U2 has there been a SB halftime show worth watching. But the Boss should have saved Born to Run for the last song in the set, it is after all, the Greatest Song In Rock and Roll History.

Okay, it's now offically over ... the fat lady (except she was kind of cute and skinny) sang the farewell song at half time in Hawaii at the pro bowl.

The anouncers were all a twitter about the best super bowl ever.

I enjoyed it even if the Cards didn't win. They said the offical that ran down the field for that first half interception for a touchdown had to be helped off the field for half time.

Did you hear about the change in the pro bowl to be played the week before the Super Bowl in Maimi next year ...
sounds like a great way to wait for the Super Bowl to me ... I always hate that one week lag time.

See ya next year or wait a minute ... if you don't count the rest of February we only have five more months till preseason.

Go Chargers ... never give up

The Pats traded Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for a 2nd round draft pick in what must be the deal of the century for the Chiefs.

I do not understand why they practically gave those two players away. Cassel I could see, he deserves a starters position, but Vrabel?

Three still missing ... the one found had a life jacket.

Fifty miles out to sea, even in the Gulf of Mexico, is a long way to go in a 21' open center console boat, but they say that's where the fish are due some kind of drop off.
