View Full Version : Question on Manual Targeting

I have always used the same procedure when manual targetting. Identify target, tick box, measure distance, AOB, enter data into TDC and update, fire.

If I skip doing the tick box and follow the rest, the torpedo should follow the same track with the same result.

The reason I have ask this is to do away with the manual and use my own instead for data input.

This question doesn't really belong in the mods section. But I'll help you out anyway.

Placing the tick mark in the recognition manual means the notepad calculator gets to know the right mastheight for distance calculations. And since the speed calculation that is dependant on this distance, it is important that this is the right value. I know of no other way of entering mastheight other than the notepad (for unmodded/stock SH3).

If you want to enter your own 'guesses' of distance and/or AOB and speed then you can enter them manually on the attack screen dials if you switch that TDC knob to manual while doing it (and back when done).

Or did I misunderstand you?

Hi Pisces
Thanks for answering.
But this question has more right to be here than some others, as it is for a new mod.
I'll take it that I can get rid of the notepad (offscreen) and manual, and use my new manual (no input) with update through TDC dials.

I'm not sure what you mean with "notepad (offscreen)". With notepad I meant that paper-like panel in the top right corner of the (attack)periscope screen (i.e. in stock SH3 or GWX). I understand that is how you got range/AOB/speed until now. If you like to use a real paper notepad on your desk to write down notes then you can also do that ofcourse. Who is stopping you. I just don't understand how you will come up with range/AOB/speed without using the notepad function. I'm not saying there are no other ways to do that, because I'm a big fan of OLC Gui/U-jagd tools, or drawing/plotting on the map myself. I am just wondering how else you are going to perform those functions with a certain amount of accuracy. Well, you can ask the watch officer for accurate range and bearing, but you'll have to gues-stimate AOB and speed if you don't resort to plotting.

Also, what do you mean with manual? The recognition book with shapes of shipmodels? The Sh3 game manual? GWX 2.1 manual? Or something you made yourself.

Ok, by looking in your other thread, I understand you are in the process of making a new recognition manual for ingame or as a pdf/hardcopy. And you wan't to avoid using that tickmark in the in-game recognition manual. Well, first be said that I do NOT know the details of how the notepad interface is coded in the .cfg or .ini files. But based on how to use it and whatelse can or cannot be entered on the TDC/attack map dials I say "No". Unless you find another way to convert a ship's size/height observation into a range, as is done in OLC Gui/U-jagd tools, I think you will be severely handicaped in manual targeting if you cannot use the notepad (range) functionality because of the lack of that ID-tickmark.

Lets say I use OLC's GUI 1.2.6 in GWX 2.1 no other mods.
I remove the ingame manual and replace it with my own, which displays 6 ships at a time and their data, mast, length, max speed etc. Reason: I can view slight differences easily and put the ships in whatever order and group I want. More Historically correct looking. There is no tick box for this manual.
I have all the relevant information for manual targeting and using U-jagd, so I can find speed, range and AOB and input it into the TDC. But have read somewhere that you need to tick the box and I couldn't understand why. I didn't want to start doing the mod if this was going to be a problem.

Allright, in those circumstances yes, you do not need the tickmark to ID. Atleast, I never needed to in OLC gui. And made plenty of spot-on hits. But I also let my weapon officer ID the target. So that may happen automatically.

But if you do want to make this into a mod you have to realize that people that rely on the notepad function will find your mod useless.

Thankyou Pisces
I have been using the OLC gui that long, I'd forgotten that to access the notepad requires the tickbox. I could put the tickbox etc, in the notepad area. I'll have to have a rethink.
