View Full Version : WANTED! Dead or Alive - T2 Beta Testers

Okay, okay - TBH I would much prefer alive.
As part as an effort to improve the stock Silent Hunter 3 shipping I have been busy for several days creating new versions of the T-2 tanker. I want to make sure that they work on as wide a variety of setups as possible. The model is almost finished and there are dozens of skins ready but I have only had one person so far volunteer to test it. Please let me know if you have the time and interest, and mention what setup you use (NYGM, GWX, vanilla or whatever).
I would also appreciate it if anyone knows of US oil companies that used large tankers at the outbreak of the war (I already have skins for some of the better known operators).
Thank you.

I'd be happy to look at it if you don't mind.

While I can't help you out with a beta test at the moment, IABL, I can give you some company names to work with. Some you may have, some are a little less known.
Standard Oil Of New Jersey (also called Esso, pronounced S-O, what we now know as Exxon)
Standard Oil of New York (Now called Mobil)
Standard Oil of California (Formed from CALTEX Oil, became Texaco and Gulf in 70's and 80's)
Humble Oil Of New Jersey (A subsidiary of Esso)
British Anglo-Persian Oil Company(Now known as BP)
Cities Service Oil Company
Atlantic Refining
Tidewater Associated Oil Company
Shell Oil Company (Still known as Shell)
Socony-Vaccuum Oil Company
Sun Oil Company
Pan American Petroleum
Interesting note. Most of these companies were also the source of the major funds required for building The Big Inch pipeline. The Big Inch was a pipeline that ran from Texas through Arkansas to Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It was used to cut down on shipping traffic through the Florida Straits and up the east coast, due to the threat of uboat attacks. Hope you find this info useful! Can't wait to see the new ship!

I don't know about older large tankers, but the first T-2 appeared in August 1941 and was taken into the navy shortly after. A lot of T-types sailed in civilian service, but not until 1942 or later. Here is a good set of photos of all T-types. Most of the interesting civilian ones were taken after the war, unfortunately.

Thank you very much for your support, people (and thank you, Friction, for the info). I am going to try to upload the beta early tomorrow morning. I will try for between now and September when I hit the books again. I'd say go ahead & play the game with GWX and the other mods that have come out. My mod only adds ships so it can be installed on top of any installation of SH3, as long as there doesn't happen to be a vessel with the same name in the data\sea folder (very unlikely).
The beta would be finished sooner, but a nasty commute from work leaves me little time on weekdays for modding.:damn:

Just gave it a test run, works fine, looks great, see PM
edit/add: Just noticed you prefer comments, screenshots etc here ...
Gave it a test run in a single mission. Looks great  . No problems at all ... except for his guns. Oh, they work fine ... too darned well as he picked up my periscope and started blasting away at me :D .
This was running on GWX2.1 + OLCUbermod + Community Units (remmed out the existing T13A ship in names file) and other bits and pieces.
Recog manual entry fine, no angle views which maybe not yet done. Weps id'd target fine.
Here are some screenies:

Tested it on Gwx with all the mods I use off and it runs fine I checked all the things listed below.
Sailing test.Pass
turning test. pass
torpedo test. pass
Keel torpedo test. pass
weapons test. pass
Fireing aa at planes. Pass
Being hit by bomb from plane. pass
Looks great also:D
Best way to sink them is a keel shot in a sertan spot but im not going to ruin someones fun.
Revere. try under the bow between the bridge and the bow or at the stern it works for me.
Running GWX 2.1 with OLCE2. Only played with it in a single mission. I'll test it in a campaign tomorrow.
Tested in calm sunny weather. On an impact shot with non volotile balast, it usually sunk with 2 torpedoes. On average, I recieved "she's going down" 15 min after torpedo impact. It took anywhere from 20 min to an hour for her to slip under the water.
I fired one magnetic shot under the keel and that was enough to cripple her, but she needed a second torp to go under.
From my experience, the sink rate is a near match to the GWX damage model. (I think GWX ships sink a bit faster. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
All in all, it works great on my machine. Model is great, textures work and are good. I tried the 1942-1945 textures and they look a little stretched at a close distance, probably because they're lighter, but that's being nit picky.
And now that I look at it, when damaged, one of the fires in the center seems a bit high. Check bottom most pic. No big deal though. Great Model!! You are a fine artist.

Working very well in Museum too::up:

Checked textures all round above and below waterline & all spot on, damn this is one nice ship!:yep:
This is with XP, ATI X1950 Pro, GWX 1.03.

Worked great for me! With IABL's help I stuck it into the torpedo training school mission. Because all the ships in the mission are by default British the poor thing suffered a case of identity confusion:
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a325/SailorSteve/SH3Img25-7-2008_103112_671.jpg
After admiring it for awhile I fired one torpedo to see what would happen. It hit just forward of the bridge; the ship settled by the stern and sank in three minutes, still making six knots.

Credit worked just fine too:

I just conducted three more tests. Using the torpedo school a second time it again took one torpedo and sank in three minutes.
Test #3) Switched to gunnery school. It took 19 shots, something exploded and sank exactly three minutes after getting the "She's going down!" message.
Test #4) This time she absorbed 40 rounds, the exploded and sank in three minutes.
I don't know if it signifies anything, or, if so, what. Just reporting my results.

NGYM test: pass.
Clear day with 10 m/s winds. Two eels (magnetic & impact) and sunk in eight minutes with complete oil cargo . No secondary explosions or fires. Camouflage scheme looks fine.
More tests tomorrow.
