On my way to England Jan 1940 I get a contact spotted so plot a course towards it and nothing is detected on Uzo so I checked the camera and got this? http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t56/arronp/what.jpg

Any ideas? Both targets stationary and the close on is Dutch.:hmm:

Hi!

Are you using GWX? If so, the ship furthest from you is a lightship. See p. 438 in the GWX Manual V2.1 for details.

Yeah sorry should have said. Using GWX2.0 with Sh3Commander. Never seen this here before though. The lightship never registers as anything.

Looks like they got the lightship possibly classed as "enviromental" in the 2.0/21 release-that is probably why it will not register. Using shIII generator I have noticed they will show on the 'generated' map in game as Icebergs.

But what is that Dutch ship doing just sitting there stationary like that?! Interesting.... I say send it to the bottom, just to be sure!

The Dutch ship is there to alert you and your crew to the presence of the lightship. The lightship will not be reported by your crew since it is an environmental object.

Yep, every lightship has a tug along to service it.

Why did the GWX team classify the lightship as an environmental?:hmm:

I encountered the same lightship in the North Sea and another in the Irish Sea.:know:

I think it should be destroyed (at least the enemy-flagged lightships) because it aids merchants' and enemy warships' navigation!:arrgh!:

The whole point of the tonnage war is to deny Britain of the supplies needed right? So anything that can help them should be destroyed!;)

Probably because - like a lighthouse - it aids navigation for all ships, including u-boats. Sink it and the next time you're there, you run on the rocks. That can't happen in the game, but in real life it might have been one of those tacit 'do not touch' things.

Precisely as Steve states.

In RL WWII era there was a very tall winding tower at the local coal mine near the mouth of the River Tyne.

The Luftwaffe used it as a navigational aid in lining up there approach for bombing runs on the shipbuilding yards and never attacked it during their countless sorties.

It is rumoured that this tower was the safest place to be during an air raid

The lighthouses were scripted as environmentals to stop them drifting like harbour traffic can on occasion in-game.
