Hi all,
This may seem quite a basic question to those of you who are initiated into the black arts of modding and mucking about with files etc, but due to my ignorance with, ( and terror  ) of delving into programme files, I would appreciate it very much if some kind soul could clarify this for me.
I'd like to bring back the bino's bearings in GWX 2.1, I've searched the forum and have I think, found the answer, thanks to Danlisa.
Apparently I have to change a line in ' menu.ini. '.
Bearing in mind that I have no experience of this kind of thing, or indeed have no idea what a ' menu.ini. is or where I would find it, could someone please explain what to do, and if it would be advisable for a complete beginner to attempt this operation.
My greatest success so far in modding this great game, is learning how to d/l and unzip a mod into JSGME. That is one great programme, many thanks to Mr Jones for that. However that is an indication of how limited my computing skills are.
Anyway thanks for any forthcoming replies.

:D

Firstly, what mods do you have in JSGME? I ask because some can edit/change the 1024_768Menu.ini. If they do you will need to investigate whether they need changing too.

There are 2 ways to get the bino bearings back.
1)Edit the menu.ini (use windows search to get it's location) to change the bearing2.tga reference to read bearing.tga......(there is only one line within the menu.ini that lists the bearing2.tga file)

or

2)Find the bearing.tga and bearing2.tga files (again windows search will help), copy bearing.tga to a location outside the original path, rename it to bearing2.tga and copy and overwrite it back in.

Option 2 maybe the easiest for you. The only thing that differs between the 2 tga files is that I erased the detail/alpha channel on bearing2.tga, which is why nothing is shown in game.

Hi danlisa,
Thanks for the prompt reply. The mods I have enabled in JSGME are as follows: GWX Capt. America's officer icons
Thomsen's WhispeRing Ring mod
GWX contact colours
Lifeboats & debris v3b
All running on GWX 2.1, of course.
One more question, when I do pluck up courage to change the files, can I change the file just using the normal cursor and keypad, or do I have to do it via a special programme ? Hope that makes sense !

Thanks again for taking the time to reply and help me out.

None of those mods will conflict with the changes.

If you decide to use the menu.ini route, just open the file with windows notepad, then use Ctrl+F to use the built in search function to look for bearing2.tga.

If you choose the rename route, well, just do as detailed above.

Hi All,
Just returned from a work commitment in the Shetland Isles, found a great place for lots of tanker activity, Sullom Voe anyone ? Anyhow back to the issue in hand, docked back at Kiel after my last very successful patrol, and while in port tried to alter the bearing file as advised by Danlisa. ( See above posts ), however when I used windows search to find " bearing.tga " it came back with two files both named " Bearing ", they are both in the same place and appear to be the same as each other, am I missing something here ? Apart from my obvious ignorance of these things I mean !
Anyway thanks for reading, and for any forthcoming pointers.

If they are identical in name and extension and location, they are the very same file. There cannot be 2 files of the same name (extension included) in the same location. Windows Search function must be seeing double. Time for Bill Gates (or whoever is chief there now) to get a new prescription for his glasses. ... Let him contract a 'window cleaner' while he's at it. ;)

Why not check the location of those file(s) using windows explorer. Pretty sure only one shows up there.

Are you sure one is not a shortcut to the image? Is there a small curved arrow on the icon?

Ah Subvers4

Sullom Voe still there ?
IIRC the RN used it as a base in WW2

Hi Pisces,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have checked the file paths of the two files and there is a slight difference between them eg:
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter111\data\Menu\Gui
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter111\MODS\GWX-Contact Color\data\Menu\Gui
The thing is they are called "Bearing", not "bearing.tga" I hope this clarifies things, or have I muddied the waters even further ?

That's probably because explorer doesn't show (as standard) the extension after the filename. It's an option you can enable. Atleast, in w98 and XP. Don't know Vista.

To do that: Open Explorer, or any folder window,

Go Menu/Extra, Choose "Map Options"
Click 2nd tab (In my dutch XP it is named "Weergave", translates to "view"???? )
In the "advanced settings" list it is the 8th checkmark: "Hide extentions for known filetypes" (well, words to that effect anyway)

Ahoy Pisces,
Thanks again for your help, I think I found it following the path of the first file, I renamed it, and will now go to join U50 at Kiel, check with my WO, and set sail to my assigned patrol grid. Wish me good hunting fellow Kaleun. See you in the Black cat on my return !

Hi BigBoyWooly,
Yes Sullom Voe is still there, though a lot of the pipework is needing replaced, it's been 30 years since it was built. Still filling up those big tankers and sending them out though. Have you worked there yourself ?
Yes the RN had a base there during WW2, from what I could gather it was used as a base for seaplanes, I guess a lot of their work was patrolling that channel for U-boats ! My digs were in Scalloway, which was an important secret base for the Norwegian resistance, I didn't have the time to visit the museum there to find out more, I wasn't able to get away from the job. But in Scalloway itself there is a memorial to the Norwegians who lost their lives while stationed there. It sounds an interesting story, I'll have to look it up one evening.

0600, July 28, 1940.
U50 a type V11B boat leaves the European mainland behind after traversing the Kiel canal, and slips easily through the glassy, calm waters of a peaceful, still summer's morning heading towards the unpredictable North Sea, and a date with an unknown destiny.
Oberleutnant Zur See Ludwig Kaiser clambers up into the conning tower, and takes a moment to savour the fresh, slightly salty clean air of a new dawn. His WO, Leutnant Ernst Bachman greets him, "gut morgen Herr Kaleu", Ludwig responds with a smile, he has a good crew on this boat, some have been with him since his first command, U7 a type11. Ernst is a good seaman, and an excellent officer, he will make a first class commander of his own boat one day.
"Are you going to try them out sir ?" asks Ernst, " yes , I think I will" replies Ludwig "a good craftsman needs quality tools to do a quality job eh number one ?" He reaches into the leather case around his neck and pulls out the shiny new, black metal and leather binoculars that he had been presented with by two fellow Kaleuns, Danlisa and Pisces that last night in Kiel before they set sail, they were made by his favourite manufacturers, and he had been unable to replace them since they were lost overboard during a night attack against a convoy a couple of trips ago.
God only knows where that pair had got them, he had been unable to source them himself, there was a war on and luxury items were hard to come by nowadays, but he thanked them again silently as he scanned the horizon through the familiar optics. " Lets go to work number one ! "

Thanks again guys.
