(before I go on, bear in mind that I know absolutely nothing about modding other than 2D art, so please forgive any ignorance and glaring naivete)

After reading up recently about some of the later RN escorts of the Battle of the Atlantic - the Loch and Castle classes for instance - I began wondering whether it would be possible to modify the SH3 Hedgehog to produce a working facsimile of the late-war Squid mortar - specifically, if you could reduce the number of projectiles to three while massively increasing their explosive power, and set them to explode via proximity or timer or through whatever mechanism the in-game depth charges use. Possible?

It'd also be necessary to rework the 3D model to accurately depict Squid:

double Squid mount on the quarterdeck of unidentified ship - the one on the left is in the "load" position and appears to have some practice bombs/Quint's barrels sticking out of it

Is this wildly beyond the realms of possibility and only feasible with an SDK? It just feels like we're missing the coolest, and most potent, ASW weapon of the war. I can't be the only one who'd love to play against a fully bombed-up frigate.

I started them at Mush Martin's request.
The 3D models, textures and such are done.
As I was heavily involved with GWX 2.0 and 2.1?
They fell by the way side along with a few other things.

Infact, digging through some old files?
I found these.
Dye markers,
Sonar bouys,
Smoke markers,
and a very nasty thing.
I think it was called a FIDO?

The cool thing about squid is that unlike limbo
squid was aimed by pointing the ship itself, which
of course can be done in game.

Loch Class will be the Game dominating
escort in ATO I am certain. there are
ships with better records in history but
only because of the short time for Lochs
while the war was still on. but from a
sub skippers perspective those are
some very scary monsters the kind that
wont leave you even nightmares.

Other things must be completed before I re-address

Mmmm, this is all very interesting. Thanks for replying, guys.

Did the Squid mod ever get implemented, even at an alpha/beta stage? My own thoughts were that the 3D model, textures and so on would be the easiest hurdle to overcome, but actually getting the "projjies" to work properly might be a sticking point. How exactly did you work around this?

I also take it that this mod is abandoned at the moment as far as the SH3 platform goes? It'd be a shame - I'd love to see a Loch class as modelled by IABL, for instance, armed with Privateer's Squid mod appear in '44 onwards.

Nope he's been marked by a K ship for depth charging by a Destroyer
Escort. that established Bernard does seem to be whimpering in the head

3 Marker were used.
Depending on the year?
Dye, Smoke,
then Passive Sonar Bouys.
All aircraft at one time or another used them.

I started the mods to put a visual explaination to
a common complaint.
That being...

I was attacked by an aircraft and latter a ship found me!!
Not fair, not realistic!!
Duh!!
The game did not have the visual clues for you!!

Most people do not realize things are pretty realistic
in a give and take way.

And the FIDO was voted out for GWX 2.X because people would
most likely have had a FIT!!

People whine the AI is to 'insert comment'.
IF, and I repeat,
IF? You really play the Sim?
You can beat it every time!!
That's a given.
And I really don't care if you use cheats
or figured out the AI's dumbness.

I give about 1/4 inch of care if it's talked about,
pointed out, or hammered into the mind set!

Each and every person will run the Sim as they see fit.
If they choose the easiest and quickest way?
Good on Ya Mate.
If they choose the Hardest way?
Good on Ya Mate!

One thing we all must remember.

I Love the sport of sub simming thats what I love the most
figuring out how to do just that, beat it in a fair fight.
to me that is the whole joy of the thing, its the essence
of why we constantly strive for better and better AI in each
new game. to see if we can match it with blood and sinew.

the AI in both versions are retarded if you can understand
what I mean.

If a given situation comes up?
Every ship will respond with a pedictable action.
There is no indivival AI.

Why do ships attack through land objects?
Why do units sink each other?
The AI is a near perfect example of people I talk to and work with
on a weekly basis!

And that is not an insult to them!
That is the Gods Honest Truth!

The AI is Handicapped.

even against best AI blood and sinew has an edge. tis the plain truth
and likely always will be. for the most part they are pattern runners
not actually cognizant.

I dont encourage humanity to create and enslave a race of
cylons then let them know there slaves that would probably
end badly.

so I will take what I can get in the current form.
I really think it comes down to more types and
variations in the ai library and a digital awareness
of the flock so to speak where by AI group position
together with sub position and convoy position
as well as time and weather would determine
tactics of the escorts. true though that is
and talented though this community maybe
that wont happen in any current version of SH.

In actuallity?
Multi AI sensors can be done.

What we worked with was a set standard.
We talked about doing this but as all the testing
and code work combined with real life?

We decided it was not that great of an issue.
You all have the Mod.

We are moving on to SH4.
You are free to do what you will to the GWX series.

Only thing you can not do?
Is use the term 'Official'

Not even I can use that term!!
There is NO official support for SH3 GWX!!
That is a done deal!!

The need for squid is to make an effective Loch Class Frigate.
the need for the loch class Frigate is to make the SH Oceans
much more dangerious for players than it already is. I may
shoot my mouth off now. but to put up the scope and see
a Lochie would make me much more cautious and h..hu..hum....humble.

I just finished searching through all 5 systems here at home.
Each has 3 Hard Drives and a DVD drive.
I also searched through 10 DVD's of stuff.
(for lack of a better word)

The finals are no where to be found!!
:damn:

However, I did find some near finals that I can re-work.
I know they are near finals because they are in a stand alone dat.
Plus the dates are just about right on them.
