i always ask myself, why there is still not translucent water surface in sh3...as the water is from down under translucent, when looking upwards.
and the atlantik was translucent as to a depth of 10 meters. that is reported from crews of airplanes, who saw uboats to a depth of 5-10 meters from above.
wheres the problem with that?
:hmm:
I don't think it's possable, or more so not viable, it's too much, even for Racerboy!;):p
It might be possible, but if you want that kind of thing why not buy SHIV and wait until
the u-boat mods are in a better stage of development.

I own SH4, bought the pre-release version of it. It sits on my bookshelf collecting dust! What I dislike about it is the user interface and crew control (SH3 was great so why change it?), the grainy looking graphics (some kind of filter effect), and the TDC. The one strong positive I see in SH4 is the incredible graphics. Now if we can get those graphics or come close to those graphics in SH3 there's no need for SH4 (unless you want to play American subs).
As far as the add-on goes, give me a break, SH3 is what that is for :yep:

There is an easy fix for the grainy graphics. I think the crew management is worlds better. The add-on also brings better file management so the game loads very quickly. I think SH4 will be replacing SH3 sooner than later, but then I can't do all the cool things you can, so I'll just leave my two cents and watch the magic happen.:sunny:

I will take your word for it.
My machine can't cope with SHIV.

Didnt somebody early last year attempt a mod whereby
they reversed the attached reflection on the surface
and it looked like you were looking through the water
at the subs underhull, IIRC it was quite a good
illusion and resourceful too.

Cant recall the person who originally suggested this method of reversing the reflections but as you can see it kind of worked, only problem was youd loose the transparency effect as soon as the sub dived.

Great, right words!
Kind regards:up:

Comparing both games in their current state I would say that regarding 3D models complexity and detail SH3 is on par to SH4, regarding the water some mods like OLC's environment come close and the special effects have mostly been ported over already.
What I still see as the current biggest factor differentiating boths sims and marking SH3 as clearly the oldest are the crewmen :hmm: The crew in SH4 are way better modelled, for me the SH3 cyborgs have always been pure "inmersion-killers" but SH4 has now a crew I can feel comfortable with.
If we could port those crewmen to SH3, I believe that would be a major milestone in updating SH3. :ping:
Adding my two cents here. IMO, there are two things SH4 does better, i.e. the crew management and the target ships' behavior. Crew is rather self-explanatory. By ship behavior I mean the way convoys scatter and ships start running to all directions when attacked is much more realistic than the so robotic "always-same-course-but-zigzagging" behavior of ships in SH3. Maybe some talented modder will be able to bring this behavior in SH3 too, hopefully.
The crew in SH4 are way better modelled, for me the SH3 cyborgs have always been pure "inmersion-killers" but SH4 has now a crew I can feel comfortable with. Except the fact that you can see through them, sometimes they have only eye sockets & looking at some of them give you an evil eye, however the biggest downfall is not being able to interact with them!:-?

my 2 bob also,
would it be that hard or even possible for some of the modding maestros to port those crew models and animations to sh3?.....geez wouldnt it be fine..... so many what ifs.....
another plus for sh4 is the ships damage and water moddeling.... 3d damage kinda rocks:rock: i must say

Rigth, mate!
I don'd get it why they had to change this! Incteracting with the Crew worked so well in SH3 why leave it out in SH4. Bah!:stare:
Maybe SH4 will be worth my time once the mates from GWX do their mojo!

Correct, to me that would be SH4's only hope!:yep: I compare them as such:
SH3 - SH4
XP - Vista
I think I've said enough!

Still i think it would be cool to have transparent water if it's doable. SH3 already does contain transparency to light sources

You can't port them for one very simple reason.
They won't line up correctly.
Nearly every animation would be 'off' here and there.
Other reasons would be,
1. The animations are called differently between the versions.
This is hard coded stuff.
2. To overcome number 1?
You need to understand both versions animation stuff.
Then re-code the SH4 animations so they work in SH3.
That's Hex only right now.
You'd be far better off to re-do from scratch the SH3 crew.
The work would be a little less but you'd have total control
and could actually improve things.

I haven't looked into the SH4 animations but I do understand SH3's animations (as I figured out the scale and offset floats that has allowed many new animations to come to life). Maybe you'd be willing to inform us how the SH4 animations work and I'd be willing to write some software to convert SH4 into SH3 animations? :hmm:

The crew animations are a different breed from the standard animations.
Mostly the same, just arrainged in different files in a way.
SH4 does use the same approach to an extent.
For the crew anyway.

You should still have my e-mail address.
I'd prefer private exchanges.
To much clutter other wise.
Once done?
Go for it for all to see.

Freiwillige started a similar thread several days ago... I believe the general response was a resounding, 'Not possible.'
Ah well... It would be wicked cool to have transparent water in SH3...
