STzSinkingShipFix released!
------------------------------

Stops Foundering Ships in Heavy Seas

In several of my patrols, I have noticed some ships seem to have a great deal of difficulty navigating heavy seas. How many times have you approached a juicy target that has no apparent damage, only to hear the creak and groan sound that tells you the ship is slowly sinking? What's more, if you put an eel into her, you frequently don't even get credit for the kill?!! How unfair is that!? :p

This mod is designed to end the sinking ship bug that exists for ships like the Tramp Steamer, Granville Type Freighter, Landing Ship Tank, and others once and for all! Simply unzip the file to your MODS folder, install via JSGME, and enjoy! As a special treat, even though it doesn't have a sinking problem, I have made some non-graphic adjustments to the C3 Cargo so that it doesn't look quite so bulky and out of place next to all of the other merchant ships.

I hope you enjoy this mod. If there are any other ships that you feel have that "sinking" feeling, please let me know and I will try to fix them, too. For example, please note that I have not looked at any of the warships yet, so warships are not included in this fix. If there is enough interest, I will consider working on them, as well. Finally, please direct any questions, problems, or criticisms to me in this thread. I look forward to your feedback! You can get my mod here: http://hosted.filefront.com/SubTypeZero/ (http://hosted.filefront.com/SubTypeZero/)

Good hunting!

I have just updated the sinking ship fix to include the HMS Aquitania, the Large Troopship, and the Ocean Liner. Hopefully, these ships should no longer slowly come to a stop and sink when undamaged. Please note that my changes do not alter the graphics of any ship in the game, just the "mass" value and sometimes the "gc_height" value in the .sim file so the ship is less likely to take on water in high seas.

This mod is designed to replace the .sim files of the selected ships in both 1.4b and GWX 2.1, but should work with any mod, with the exception of the LifeBoats&DebrisOptionalFiles mod (optional neutral bouyancy mod) because of changes to the .sim files of the selected ships.

Thank you VonDos for kindly allowing me to use your .sim file for the Cunard passenger liner as a starting point for this version of the mod.

hi,
first ...thanks for your time and for the good job......in the read me file you wrote that the version 2.1 of the sinking fix is an addition to the version 1.2.....i coudn't find the link for the original mod. wher i can find the 1.2 ?

thank you and good hunting

Version 2.1 includes all of the ships already contained in 2.0, plus three additional ships.

Or, are you saying you don't want the additional ships included in 2.1? :hmm: If you want to get rid of the three additional ships in 2.1, just delete the folders for these ships. The folder names are NLUS, NPPL, and NLPL. (Be sure to disable the mod first)!!

If you are uncomfortable deleting stuff, I have already provided separate links for both 2.0 and 2.1.

EDIT: Now I see what you mean by version 1.2. Version 1.2 is for my TrampSteamerFix. Both STzSinkingShipFix 2.0 and 2.1 replace and add to the TrampSteamerFix. Don't use the TrampSteamerFix mod anymore since it only contains fixes for the tramp steamer and is out of date, to boot. I will edit the readme file to try and make that a little more clear.

Change your wave height back to 256 and you won't have sinking ship issues. You can't build a ship sailing behavior ingame based on 256 wave amplitude and than change it to 320 and ask it to work.

Besides, 256 is much more realistic.

Thomsen!! :D :D

I must beg to differ! With my adjustments, you can get the ships to behave in an acceptable manner in higher than stock wave-heights. True, my mod is mainly for those who wish to use SH3 Commander to alter the wave-heights to "seasonal" or "2X" stock. If you are not using that feature, you probably don't need this mod.

As far as which is more realistic, I guess that is a matter of taste. :p Myself, I like to give players the option! Use it if you wish, if not, your choice. :|\\

OLC,
I am very happy to hear that you are going to try my (small) mod! I will be very pleased to hear your opinion and any suggestions for changes or improvements.

Well, if you look at the ocean you'll see that there's a zillion of small waves, while on SH3 there's a lot of big waves, filling the same space. I've tryed to make a real ocean on SH3, it's possible, but requires and incredible machine to process all those small waves, so it's good looking but not playable...

Hmm... I don't use that SH3C feature... but I do notice ships sometimes sinking from the weather in GWX. At least, they make that whining sound, so I assume they're (slowly) sinking. This mod will fix that, right?

Subtype Zero

That's exactly why I developed the mod, to get rid of that whining sound which seems to be an indication that the ship is slowly sinking! :nope: Indeed, I used the mission editor to test "convoys" of different ship-types, looking for those ships that emitted that whining sound. Almost inevitably, any ship making that noise will eventually sink. So, I started tweaking and ended up with my sinking ship fix. So far, I have only tested merchants and one or two military types like the LST.

Thanks for reminding me that some ships sink without player intervention even at stock settings. Although I made my changes so the ships would not sink even with the wave-heights set to 2X via SH3 Commander, the ships seem to work just as well at stock settings. So, I think you can use the mod with either stock or altered settings via SH3 Commander.

If using the mod at stock settings, one possible problem might be ships that seem harder than normal to sink. I, however, have not personally observed this potential problem.

Sounds good. I wondered whether ships would be harder to sink, but even if that's the case its better than ships sinking on their own. Cheers.

Yes, I have wait for it a long time!
It's very useful mod! Sometimes weather conditions supports attack and your mod make it possible!
Bye, bye vale of tears after torpedoed "uncreditable" ships!

While tracking a convoy last night i spotted HMT Aquitania. After
the convoy had passed the ship was right in front of me, immobilized
and about to sink. I wasted no time and torpedoed her. The weather
conditions were very good: no clouds, no rain, visibility 16km and
wind speed 8 knots!
There were no reports for Uboats in the area. I wonder if such
a ship (47000 tons or so) can be sunk due to weather in SH3 world.
Still, 8 knots wind speed should be manageable for HMT Aquitania.
Even an 8000 tons ship shouldn't have any problem at such weather
but it doesn't seem to be this way.:yep:
I'm thinking loud here but, anyway, thanks for this mod Subtype Zero,
it seems i'm gonna need it.

Tomfon--
Were you using my mod? If not, Aquitania is one of the ships that I have worked on to try and make less sinkable by wave action alone.

Note that if you use any ship mods other than stock or GWX (von Dos, for example), you need to apply my mod after you have applied their ship mod to get it to work properly.

No, i wasn't using your mod Subtype Zero. Not at all. I installed it
yesterday after the "Aquitania" incident i described above.

I had your mod downloaded before i decided to install it.
After sinking Aquitania i remembered that you included a fix for
her in the last version. This is how i started thinking seriously
about installing it.:D

I came across a tramp steamer in GWX 3.0 during a 15 m/s storm that was cruising at 6 knots. I was trailing her and she started slowing down and her nose was going under slowly. I guess damage from the wind and waves. :nope:

So it seems this fix is still needed in GWX 3.0 Is it compatible?

BTW. I was using 1.0x wave height.

Ah, good question! Don't know the answer, as I just became aware that GWX had released another update to their most excellent mod. Thanks GWX team! I assume that it works with the mod. Can anyone else confirm that it does? or ?

Thanks, guys. Good to hear that it works with the latest incarnation of GWX.

Here's another question: does anyone use my mod with the GWX optional buoyancy mod? Notice any strange behavior or abnormalities?

I like my mod because I like to be the one responsible for sinking a ship--not the freakin' weather. Mod is especially helpful if you like to set the waves to 1.5 or 2.0 via SubCommander.

Hello,

I can see Philipp Thomsen changed .sim files in his ship mod. What do you guys think are the differences in these two mods and cna they be combined? Or is there even a reason to combine them?

Anyway, thanks STZ!
