View Full Version : best mod for slower machines?
Ahoy fellow Kaleuns!
For those of us with machines probably too weak to run GW what is the best mod to try?
What a great game.

Starting with vanilla/stock (naturally) I'd work my way upwards, one mod at a time.
Make a start with the Harbour Traffic 1.47 mod.

lo mate
one mod that will have no effect on spec is one of the message mods.
they really add to the realism over stock sh3....making you feel part of the war.
im in the process of adding a little tweek to the message file myself.....as for graphical mods make sure theyre not for gwx only
good luck:up:

I didnt even know that SH3 runs on graphics cards without pixel and vertex shaders...
Thanks guys-
I was curious because I am using 'Improved U-boat 1.03" which I understand is a older mod. I enjoy it and so far the only problem seems to be a recurring graphics issue when I raise the scope and it breaks the surface. Then I get all kinds of crazy colors and parts of the boat disappear. I just didn't know if this was a problem with this mod for my machine or a completely different issue.
Thanks again for the help.

I took a chance and picked up the game about a year ago just to see if it might work. I was actually amazed myself that it did. Aside from the raised periscope issue I mentioned in my last post it seems to work fine.

As xristoskaiti said above, NYGM 2.6B should work for you. It is still being supported/updated.

I don't know the age or driver deal on that card, but your system could use more ram. Double your ram if you can, one of the best upgrades. And usually the cheapest, unless that is a laptop.

Geforce 4 Ti4600 does have pixel/vertex shaders, it was the Geforce 4 MX versions that didnt.
+ I used to run GWX2.1 with lower specs than those on my lil laptop, so youd probably be fine to run it (youd just have 10min load times with only 512mb ram).
As a comparrison my old laptop specs are:
1.1GHz cpu (pentuim3 based celeron)
512Mb ram
Radeon 9200 (128Mb)
It gets an average framerate while at sea of 28-30 fps, it drops to ~20fps in busy harbours and convoys.

You could try CB's, AIFight the tinyiest SH3 "supermod" around)
destroyer behaviour & aggression mod version 5.
File is only 135KB. :)
AI_sensors.dat goes into data/library
sim.cfg goes into data/cfg
commands_en.cfg goes into data/cfg
no extravagant claims --
it just works
dynamic Destroyer/escort behaviour
changes to the view system;
no F12 view-but the ship camera and next ship works as normal (so you can watch you sub plow along as normal)
custom F2 command room view-uses the free roam interior camera to allow you to set you own view position for the command room-
have some fun
recomended only for those using the stock SH3 destroyers
CB..
GWX2.0 worked fine for me. on my old beast. but make sure you got lite harbour on. and no High res mods.

I'll try it then. I hear so much about how great the mod is and it is hard feeling like I am the only one not enjoying it! What can I lose? If it doesn't work, it doesn't work! :hmm:
Thanks again-

Make sure your video card drivers arent too old... maybe try updating them to get rid of those graphical errors in the periscope.... plus they might improve performance a bit if your current drivers are really old.
Also make sure all Anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering are disabled in the nvidia control panel.
flakmonkey,
my bad... of course, even GF3 had DX8 programmable shaders.

Test out all the mods.
But as far as hardware?
RAM!!!
My system specs are lower edge
but I run 2 Gigs of RAM.
I also disable non-critical funtions when in game.
IE
No internet,
No message systems etc.
