Hello!
I have couple of questions that are aimed at modders and such.
1. Last couple of days I was very frustrated because I was trying to start a campaign on GWX 2.1 with my fav set of mods for it, I listed them on one another thread. Anyways on that thread were included aotdmax shleuse with bugfix and community add on. What happened was that I got multiple ctd's trying to start it. I was so annoyed and on the verge of stopping to play it because I can't for some reason. I combined many mods, tried, reinstalled couple of times and then with luck because I was checking a ton of files, I found out that m35hansa and m35r, the ships in addon and shleuse are one and the same ship. They differ in some files, but some are completely THE SAME!? And what is worse, addon is supporting the aotd mad max aa ships mod. I didn't check out other ships yet. My question and a kind request for all of you modders, this is not some annoyed yelling, I am talking in a spirit of this nice community, is can you please check, test and note such "things" when you don't have enuf time to end the model(it is reasonable, rl and things) and you know that such a "thingy" will ruin someone's game. It is really hard when I got in a situation when single missions work, campaign not.. That means 30 minnutes a test. I am sick these days and home so I got the time to do this while reading "From now to eternity", but plenty people will not do it and I don't blame them. They will just get the bitter taste in their mouth trying to add something they find they like, and having to satisfy with something they didn't prefer right now. Thanks for listening..

2. One thing occured to me yesterday. I am so yet in a work to make all those mods compatible and to make a game nice to me and I am shure plenty of people here do the same. Now, this is only a suggestion, so don't be mad. if you don't agree, ok..
It is a situation that bothers me when you have 20+ mods, even when authors make compability patches you always have one or two files(usually a mod) you have to modify to get the "proper" result. "proper" for you or just to make it ctd free, since this is a game where much of the people think alike, "proper" would often be nice to plenty. Anyways, with my current list of mods, there are about 10+ or even 20+ of such files together with some customizations just for me.
What I am suggesting is that modders(I don't regard myself like that but I would be willing to do it first) write a list of jsgme enabled mods they use in order they should be enabled, that means a configuration on what they play(no matter on what supermod) and ofcourse upload a "compability patch" they custom made and that they use to make that configuration work in a way that satisfies them. Since some or the majority of modders hate when you take or modify their materials without asking, I was thinking only of the mods made by the members of subsim, who agree with this idea. They ofcourse should speak.
It would not disrupt the mod releases, nor releasing compability patches by the authors. It would releave us all of questions like "why does it not work with this, can I use it with this and such", because modders who understand the files or some files, would release their combo they play which is far better than to have some "don't understand it" guy meddling himself, which will only lead to ctd and him hating the game, which is IMO terrible. It would enhance also the game for many to play it the way for instance privateer plays or olc(ofcourse if they agree) plays the game. Or Kpt. Lehman. Or bigboywoolly. To name the few. Again ofcourse, if they agree. I am pretty certain some of their combos are unique and really fun.
If that combo doesn't work for the player, you don't use it without any questions, it doesn't work on your computer and thats that.
I came to that idea because I have to do it anyway for me so why don't I share it with others.
The idea is also to have only one thread where modders would release such files.

The first in the list is the 2.1 bugfix plus AOTD Maxs ships plus Iambecomes AA ships plus the Holtenau and Brunsbuettal locks
Second is what is posted on here as the community units ship mod including later released units such as VonDos's liners
Third is the Lifeboats mod and lastly the torpedo damage mod to make the holes look better

As I usally hunt in Atlantic I dont need the Merged

Skins are mods I really need to take a look at
Not really used any as playing time limited but I know there are plenty of great ones ouut there

Discovered I know j..t about ship building, many ships share the same dsd file, that was the confusing thing. For me, cause as I said I know.. :doh: But I noticed some other thingies..
I was kinda hoping this thread will encounter some "resistance and activity", so far just bbw answered.
Would be cool though, at least I thought that way..

For combo wakefix exhaust, have you made changes to draught and range values in rubini's dat files and adjusted the height values to 0,45 to rb's files?

asanovic7, I'm not quite sure what you're asking my permission for, but whatever it is consider it given! :up:

My mod setup is simple:
GWX 2.1
OLC Ubermod 2.4.2

I've tried a lot of other GWX addons but the ones I liked invariably came with some small (or sometimes large) problems or bugs, and each time I end up back at my "tried and tested and trusted" GWX+OLCU setup.

Right now I'm on a break from playing SH3 but when I get back into it I'll definitely be adding an extra SH3 install so I can try out WAC3 :)

What kind of changes you made to englishnames.cfg in the sea folder and if you did any.
That would be all in one place. I don't know if everybody understands me or not.

The Hansa Issue?
I'm well aware of it.
The Community mod needs changed or the release BBW did needs changed to
overwrite correctly.

I found out why I was getting ctd's all the time, the reason was quite banal.. I underestimated the hunger of olce2, so I did changes to nori00 and nori01, used the earlier work by olc. It looks somewhat the same, although olc should say his word. That also means no wac for me.. Now it works. "No bugs" I have seen.. Although, it's funny.. I made a free camera on bridge(from sboot, and if I am not mistaken sergbuto did that, right?) and sometimes when I press with mouse free move, press shift and go forward, I get a msg: Solution to target.. :rotfl: Other than that, I didn't nottice anything other strange.. But I am shure I will be happy to meet more bugs.. Ok my list is:

Oh yes, I am not using remove reflections anymore..

As all can see I will undoubtedly meet a heavy defeat sometime, but to tell you the truth, spinning around the Brest under attack caused no dificulties. Tested everything, have to test it in a long campaign, well until first dd sinks me like a b..h.. The only incident I had when a sub other than mine, a "friendly idiot", was going on a course 180 to mine and then decided to go backwards across my route which ended in my bemusement and a hit to his bridge by my boat. Was hoping that son of a larky hound would sink, but he didn't

When mixing the community ships addon with bbw, used community ships englishnames.cfg, hope that is right..
AS far for the "hansa issue", there is an issue with lc_mall too, but if it doesn't break the game often or non at all, we can live that right.. I would like myself to fix it, but my knowledge about gwx files is ofcourse limited as hell..
My question, can I release my customized files, if there are interested parties that make that combo work..

I asked rdp to change the title of this thread to modders choice of mods, so that every "mod user" can pick one or the other combo(maybe or if he likes) like "experienced" people choose. But I think the main purpose of the thread is accomplished. From this handfull of lists, everyone can see the best bet for a bugfree and enjoyable game is less mods, not every you see. Regarding me is a question for other proffessions..


p.s. Chieftain Milt, I was thinking you share with the rest of the poor and wealthy, your choice of mods, not to send me a pm.. :rotfl: Godarn, that is really a good book, that From now to eternity(still not shure if that is the right title, by James Jones)..

Cases in point: flags for the subs, torpedoes for ships (yes a little unrealistic at over 100 knots speed but still cool as hell), and the adding of debris and bodies to effects in particles.dat file. Realizing that we have to work with the controllers and all given to us not all mods can be perfect and true to life. Some give and take has to take place. The mere fact that someone can even take an idea and bring it to life in the game (all-be-it sometimes less than perfect due to limitations of the game itself) should be enough, but to some it's not.
I wrote software to help bring my live-AI-ships idea to the masses. The software would edit the necessary files adding the necessary nodes and text needed so that the end-user could enjoy this idea of mine. It would scan the .dat files looking for errors and report them to the user so that the files could be fixed to prevent CTDs. At that point I had enough and it was time for me to walk away for awhile and enjoy creating for myself.
The software mentioned above would allow you to reconfigure all the nodes on any ship or sub. If you wanted a different searchlight, you could have it. If you wanted a different gun on a particular mount on a certain ship, you could have it. It was simply select node, select new gun, click equip. Presto. You wanted to change the start or end date that a particular node was used, easily done. Yes you could edit files with a hex editor and/or notepad but not everyone was comfortable doing so or knew how to do it.
Will I ever release this software? Maybe. I never finished it. It's about 90% complete and fully functional the way it is. I lost interest in it when I took my extended shore leave. Before I left I sent some 'samples' to certain individuals for testing and the results were very positive.
Where was I going with all this? I really don't know. Maybe I was trying to make the point that crazy, wild, or different ideas should be embraced, welcomed, and given a chance. Yes, some may be unrealistic (due to limitations of the game itself) but before passing judgement ask yourself if you can do it better....and if so, then do it. If not, maybe then you can help in some way for the better.
If someone adds some functionality or alters your mod in a way because it pleases them then embrace the fact that they are using your mod as a base. Nothing is perfect, anything and everything can always use improvement.

you gave the point to yourself why you should release your little prog. if others can work with it, you can get feedback and bring it to a new level. new ideas for new features for example will come, when others work with it. thats the big advantage in a big community: ideas and creativity.


you know it best, i remember some days before, you mentioned the gwx team didnt release all their tools or they didnt give all their know how to others. thats a prob in a free community. feel free to release your tool and earn the good feeling of doing something good for lots of people. when doing this, you can get more ideas, information and critics.

hey, i love your mods and your creativity is brilliant. we need these people, who are interested in "impossible" things...

The empty campaign is for testing purposes, it has no scrips, no ships, no ports, nothing but land. So the game loads in 15 seconds or less in my system. Great for testing new mods I'm working at.

The Enhanced damage effects is part of GWX 2.1. Explosions and particle effects. Eye candy.

I'll upload it to my filefront account when I get home. It's great for those who enjoy playing single missions, cos the game loads up in seconds. Just doens't work for campaign.

I don't know is that happening because I use a different set of mods compared to you..
But there is an issue with empty campaign files and single missions..
The issue is your uboot doesn't keep the depth, just falls to the bottom.. After a while.. But maybe it's me..
So I am mostly using it to test new mods on surface..

I don't know is that happening because I use a different set of mods compared to you..
But there is an issue with empty campaign files and single missions..
The issue is your uboot doesn't keep the depth, just falls to the bottom.. After a while.. But maybe it's me..
So I am mostly using it to test new mods on surface..

Nope, I don't have that issue.

- Basically I need some help with mod activation order. I have been reading various threads and PDF readme files the last three days but I'm still confused. There's just too much info out there. - Another question I have is regarding various U-boat skins. Should these be installed after all the rest of the mods or do they also need to be installed in a certain order within the overall order of the mods I listed?

- And the last question is about the AOTD-AA-Ship-Schleuse-Bugfix. After I unpacked the rar file, I noticed there's a MODS subfolder within AOTD-AA-Ship-Schleuse-Bugfix folder. Does this folder need to remain where it is or do I need to take the contents of the subfolder and put them into the MODS folder within the SHIII directory?

Sorry for all the questions. It's just that I haven't played SH3 for a few months and now there's so much info flying at me. I would really appreciate any help you could give me.

When you enable the AOTD mod the MODS folder will overwrite the contents of the current one

Skins can go in anytime as should just be a TGA but best to add them in near the end if you gonna chop and change them

If you are using SH3commander with the GWX specific files then you dont need these 2
GWX - Axis Mediterranean Aircraft Skins
GWX - VIIC41 Player Sub

SH3commander will enable them automatically when in a med flotilla or you choose the VIIC\41

GWX - Late War Sensors Snorkel Antennas only if you are Oct 44 or later in career

The rest look ok to me
OLC can give you a better idea re his mods as not much of an idea which order they need to go in

If you use that you wont see the AOTD ships in German ports and convoys
Unless you are planning to sail to Penang there isnt much point in having it enabled
Will speed up your load times slightly too

I don't mind the longer loading time, plus I thought the Merged campaign was essential not only for the Indian Ocean but also for Black Sea and Mediterranean. Should I in that case only load either Black Sea or Indian Ocean campaigns when I actually transfer there?

I just tried activating AOTD and followed by the Community Ships and it gave me a message that several files were going to be overwritten

"EnglishNames.cfg" has already been altered by the "AOTD-AA-Ship-Schleuse-Bugfix" mod.
"FrenchNames.cfg" has already been altered by the "AOTD-AA-Ship-Schleuse-Bugfix" mod.
"GermanNames.cfg" has already been altered by the "AOTD-AA-Ship-Schleuse-Bugfix" mod.
Folder "data\Textures\TNormal\tex" has already been added by the "AOTD-AA-Ship-Schleuse-Bugfix" mod.

Is this ok?

This is why I'm asking for a mod activation order because I have no idea which files from which mods can be overwritten and which shouldn't or are not recommended to be overwritten.
