TLAM got it, it's the Boeing Bird of Prey. Flew from 1996-99 and was made public in 2002. Supposedly tested out newer visual camoflauges as well as doing X-45 related development.

Seafarer, I suppose, But by this standard you can call pretty much anything a bomber, I can say a C-17 is a bomber if I take a bomb and ram it into the cargo hold
True, but then they do use C-130's to drop daisy cutter (BLU-82Bs) and MOAB (GBU-43Bs) from. Are they not bombers, if being used to drop bombs? Was not the F-105 one of the most used bombers in Vietnam. Where do you draw the line with planes officially catagorized as fighter/bomber, strike-bomber, or cargo-bomber?
Was the De Havilland Mosquito a fighter, night fighter, bomber or what (my answer is all 3).
I say if they are used or intended to be used to drop bombs, then they are bombers? WWII saw to that, with the distinction of bomber becoming one of operation, not (necessarily) design. So we have strategic bombers (which this thread has mainly posted), but also tactical bombers, strike fighters (or fighter bomber if you prefer), but all are still bombers, to my mind.
Raptor1
06-19-08, 10:11 AM
Hmm, True, But the Arrow was never intended to be a bomber or carry bombs, You can call a non-bomber a bomber if it actually ever bombed anything or was designed with that ability in mind
But it's all very complicated, so...w/e

Didn't awnser the video question because it stated what the planes were in the little info section youtube videos have. Although before it recieved its Army designation, it was the Boeing Model 214. The Boeing Model 215, identical to the 214 but with radial engines, was designated the YB-9. The Y1B-9 had Curtiss Conqueror liquid cooled engines, that were eventually replaced by Pratt & Whitney Hornet radial engines

The Vigi, what a beautiful plane (if somewhat flawed in its original mission) and it it was indeed as fast as a scalded cat! It was also huge and took some real talent to land on a pitching deck. Also, notice two things, how far back the nosewheel is behind the cockpit, making night taxiing on the carrier an interesting experience to say the least, and how the navigator basically has two teeny tiny windows from which to view the outside. :o

Actually, the Aviatik series could be configured for bombing missions, though their primary use was in reconnaissance (however, I suppose your concept of "bombing" would come into question there, as all they really did was throw a few grenade-like balls of explosives in with the observer and he'd lob them out).

NOT WHATEVER, BOY.
I'm getting that information from a decade-old or so documentary simply entitled "The Red Baron", as produced by Halbgebauer Productions, Ltd., Toronto, Canada, as released by Hawkins Communications, Inc., Toronto, Canada, as distributed by Questar/TravelNetwork, Inc. (P.O. Box 11345, Chicago, Illinois 60611). It is approximately an hour in length and the box art on the back contains four pictures (five if you count the Brit plane in the background), which are those of Werner Voss standing by the cowl of his Fokker DR.1, two British soldiers inspecting the Baron's Spandau MGs, a crashed Fokker E.III, and a DR.1 with its upper wing completely shredded and a white-black tail design (stripes, mind you; it's also missing the rudder).

The Aviatik wasn't designed to carry bombs IIRC, ofcourse the pilot could drop grenades but you could do that from any plane

Looks like a Liberator, with the nose turret of a B-17. Looking the Liberator up at wikipedia, says it's an experimantal B-24J, and I guess that's where you've got the picture from..
