What are they? Looks to have an aircraft boom on the foredeck. Are they some sort of commercial seaplane transport?

Link? Are they in the game's "museum"?

Quick search on wiki & etc turns up lots of the other CAG ;)

Are you referring to the CAM ship (Catapult Armed Merchantman) ? :hmm:

No, I think it's a TWT (Trebuchet Wielding Tanker), although I suppose it could be an OSO (Onager Slingin' Oiler)* or a BB (Ballista Boat).

It was a measure taken after the RAF couldn't guarantee aircraft escort for all convoys. The merchants would carry so called Sea Hurricanes (or Hurricats?) which were stripped of their landing-gear. After they did their job, the pilots were left a few options:

1) Fly to a nearest airfield (often few were around at sea)
2) Ditch the aircraft near a freighter, and hope you get picked up
3) Bail out near a freighter, and hope you get picked up (or seen at all)

I've not seen any of those CAM's being armed with a catapult yet though (1941 here), can they actually launch aircraft?

No, they don't launch aircraft in game.....and IIRC they aren't used either.....forgot the reason why :hmm:

That's because aircraft don't launch from ships. Am I right?:hmm:

I encounter aircraft carriers and I don't see them (not visually) launching aircraft.

I'm not 100% sure the ship even makes an appearance.....I've yet to see one other than in missions I have personally scripted.

Read the reply just above your original post
The aircraft were never intended to be recovered, they were 'sacrificed' to defend the convoy. But the pilots usually were recovered, hehe.

The ship has a chance to show in some Atlantic and Murmansk convoys
At least in GWX 2.1 it does
Even the one in the community mod is a type=100 so has a chance to show in above convoys

As to whether it spawns aircraft - thats another issue
IIRC it was Steibler who said aircraft will spawn from units providing there is an airfield in range - I guess a carrier in range would work also
At least I think thats the way it went
Carriers spawn them no problem - you wont ever see one take off or land but they do appear

BBW, thanks for that info, I have`nt seen one as yet, but have the Community Mod enabled, and have seen quite a few ships from it. Just last night I ran into a mixed group of four ships from the Community Mod, escorted by a Black Swan. I took out the Black Swan, then picked off the rest. Puts

Yeah the game can either add in one of the CAM ships or a coal freighter if the convoy includes a type=100 entry

There 43 type=100 RND entries so you wont be seeing them all the time as you shouldnt be

I use the radar in sh4+addon to detect the exact location of japanese carriers at daytime without having to enable external camera well beyond hydro and visible detectionrange on the map. Every 4-7s i can watch planes popping up or disappearing. I see them making drastic course changes just after or before landing/ launching. I havnt encountered any carriers in sh3 yet so i cant say if its the same in sh3.

ummm i cant say ive seen one either yet, although to say that i hav'nt really seen or been in contact with any large convoys, just as well i guess - keeps me away from the aunterrage of escorts and destroyers lol. Although i bound to come across some soon ! ;) .

I hav'nt seen any planes lunched directly from carriers in the game either, would be cool though. The carriers ive seen are either those in port, or ones that are in bad weather so would'nt be able to lunch them anyway. I think they do bring about more air sorties, and air patrols, if a carriers in the same grid.

Try sailing up around Scapa early war
You will be buzzed by Swordfish non stop
Swordfish are only allocated to carriers

So yes carriers will spawn them not actually fly them off though

Uhh yeh, CAM, that's what I meant. :yep:

I found it in the museum but there's another problem; they weren't introduced until 1941 (at least in-game). I'm in September of 1940.

What I was looking at was actually an Empire-type freighter. Manual targeting, you know. Once I got closer it was obvious. So, I managed to misidentify it both by name here on the forums, and in-game.

According to Wikipedia, they made eight launches and shot down 6. Not bad! On the other hand, 12 of these CAM ships were sunk.

Interesting, either way. Thanks folks!
