Don't you mean an AA gun shooting a 88mm or 105mm shell ?:hmm:
In reality it's not very practical at all on a sub.
The Yamato's 18.1 inch guns could fire a AA shell...not that it was ever any use.

Nope but a deck gun shooting anti-aircraft shell!
Just find weird, all the crew the flak gun are busy so just wondering if i can mess with the RAF by using a deck gun and shooting them!
The problem isn't when you can shot a 105mm shell to a plane; the problem is when the airplane can shot the same shell to you :hmm: :arrgh!:

Owie you own me!:nope: :nope:
I love those spooky gunships :)
I know of a story where in the Vietnam war a USAF O2 spotter plane was shot down by the main guns of a US battleship... That was pure bad luck ofcourse. Must have left a mess though

I'm not sure if the Battleships shells would explode on impacting a small aircraft?
:hmm:
Those are some pretty hardy shells!
Depending on which type were fired,
Some explode with an altimeter.
AKA Aerial burst.
Some penetrate into the ground a ways.
They leave very nice swimming holes!!
Most likely passed through the aircraft and never noticed!!
Even with out an explosion, the structural damage is going to be terrible.
Think less a hot knife through butter, more a bullet through butter!
The Yamoto's AA shells where 2,998lb each. Each was filled with 900 incendiary tubes
(thermite) and 600 steel bolts.
The shell exploded after a timed fuse and sent the steel bolts and thermite out in a 20
degree cone. Each thermite stick left a flame about 16ft long in it's wake.
The vast AA weapon was impressive, but impractical and it ruined the rifling in the
gun's barrel.

It might be lame, but I am thinking of a huge shotgun shell for the main bismarck's cannon. I wonder how much airplaine, it can take em down when the swordfish are coming.:hmm:

Can it be done?
Yes.
Will it be done?
Not by anyone that concerns themselves with being
even remotely Realistic.
Your looking for arcade mods.
Wrong forum me things.
Dejavu?
I swear I saw this before.

Richardphat,
Letum is correct that it wouldn't be very practical on a sub. Manually training and elevation a gun would have been way too slow to target a WWII aircraft.
Small (3" & 5") naval guns were used extensively by the US Navy during WWII for AA. The 3" guns were mostly for AA although they were also good against small vessels. The 5"/38 guns (we had 12 on my ship) were referred to as a dual-purpose gun; the 2nd purpose being for AA fire.
However, the 3" & 5" guns were electrically trained and elevated. They also were under a gun directors control and not typically controlled by the gun crew in the mount. The gun director was is a trainable 'pointer' that can track the target optically and, by mid war, with radar. The gun director's operator would calculate the bearing and elevation needed for the gun to lead the target (So that the shell will arrive at the same place the aircraft is going to) and the signals were sent out to drive the motors of the guns under it's control.
By the way, my ship shot down a MiG over North Vietnam waters using an 8" gun with fragmentation rounds and timed fuses. The poor **** just flew into a wall of steel up around 25,000 feet. That had to come as a surprise!

There is nothing in the game to prevent you trying to shoot planes with the deck gun btw. ;)

Hi!
It was considered and not adopted, since U-boat deck guns weren't historically equipped with antiaircraft shells.
You're welcome to try to hit an aircraft with your deck gun, but you'll need to score a direct hit, since your deck gun doesn't come with time- or proximity-fuzed shells.

Since it's possible of shooting down aircraft with the deck gun...:|\\
Is it theoretically possible of somehow incresing the elevation of the deck gun to that of a FlaK 88?:hmm:
