We just got back from the hospital about an hour ago. My brothers condition has not changed since the last update. His health has not degraded any though he looks really worn out. The doctors are surprised he has survived beyond 72 hours. They seem more optimistic about his recovery so long as he remains stable. I let him know that you guys are praying and hoping for a quick recovery. A very subtle smile was the repsonse. The next time I post it will only be if his condition changes.

Encouraging news indeed :)

I was rather worried, specially since after the big explosion of the SubSim server (I still believe that this forum is cursed!) I could only wonder. This is the first thread I checked when it came back, and I'm glad to be greeted by a post like yours.

I still have faith. If someone can hit adversity with a Mk14 torpedo (with all its flaws!) under the keel and blow it into next week, that someone has to be a subsimmer, and your brother is one from head to toe.

Ok here's some good news. Richard(aka my brother) will likely recover from his accident. He is speaking a little at a time. Sometimes it's incoherent being as drained and disoriented as he is. He wanted me to thank you guys for the support after I told him about the responses of hopes and prayers. I want to thank you guys too for the words to keep me sane. Living with my brother in the hospital has left me at home alone. Tending to his things has been a real chore. We're roomies.

The bad news is that he's going to be paralyzed for a while. Some scans were done after he indicated there was no feeling from the waist down. Thankfully because the spine was not pinched this condition is only temporary. The docs guess sometime next week he should have more feeling and possibly be able to leave the bed. It will be close to the end of the month before he'll be allowed to leave for home.

Thanks guys.

It's the living at home part that is difficult. Staying at the hospital is good cause I'm not alone there. Most of our family lives outside the city and they came in when Richard got injured. They are all gone back home to tend to their jobs. I find myself hitting the internet a lot more now without him to keep me company here at home. At least now I can sleep better knowing that things are much brighter.

If you are all wondering what exactly happened to Richard I will try to explain as I was told by the police. While taking a turn at a traffic intersection a part from his motorcycle came lose hitting the ground causing the bike to jerk. They think it was the kickstand. He lost control and drove into the side of the vehicle next to him taking the turn. The bike rebounded and the vehicle that was following my brother came from behind and broadsided him. The vehicle drove over my brother while he was holding on to his bike. If it were not for the bike my brother would be dead at the scene because it kept the vehicle from crushing him completely.

I'd really love to stay here but all I got for a gaming system is a PS3. The PC I own is an old handmedown that at best can handle games no later than 2005. My bro has the gaming PC and I can only use it when he isn't which is basically never. The Silent Hunter game he has installed is cool though too complex for my simplistic understanding. Rich was trying to teach me to play before the accident. Using some tutorials from around the net I am attempting to learn so when he gets out we can play online.

Lights out.

When I broke my back, I too was temporarily paralyzed (only for about ten hours) but it was really scary. Other than a little arthritis though, I'm fine. I'm letting you all know that my brother still has a very good chance of dying. One thing I have learned about the human body is that it can be unpredictable. Such is the case here. This morning he needed to be resuscitated due to organ failure. Possibly from the shock his liver wants to shut down. I sit here thinking that I am once again in risk of losing my brother. Just when everything seemed to be working out. This is all I know up to this point. They would not allow me to see him. Goddamn motorcycles.

That is great news Ron. The human body is an amazing organ that has a hidden will to survive, mostly driven by the human brain. I'm glad eveything is come back on line and all systems normal. And snaptrap, you'r totally right, motorcycles are bad medicine, my dad is traumatologist, and since i have memory when i go to his work at hospitals, 80% of traumas are due to the two wheel syndrome, motorcycles and bikes, i never get in those things, everything that rides (including womens =D) is dangerous

im not 100% behind ur story here, k there are allot of accidents with bikes and motorcycles. but that doesnt mean they are the devil, i mean ur car could lose a wheel and u lose control and 'bang' there u are in the hospital after hitting a tree.
accidents happen all the time, everywhere. its just bad luck that Snap had that accident but its not that he has to start hating those machines because of the accident. if u fall of a bicycle are u going to say: im never riding that thing again?
or say: my children will never get a bicycle?

sturmer

Armatian
06-18-08, 08:09 AM
It's not a good place to argue, but i didn't say "evil", the problem of a bicycle it's not falling, is that someone's car pass over you, that doesn't happen on a car because you'r are surrounded with a structure and have a seatbelt, and maybe an airbag.
Bad medicine, i meant risky business, also i meant to be a little humoristic (note the women reference =P)
To add more data, scooters are safer than normal bikes, because legs doesn't get trapped between incoming cars and bike
But again, there's no evil, just more risk, nothing else.

it's nice to see ron has been busy passing on information about my condition. he done a lot of work with informing people i know about the incident. he's the greatest. i apologize for the improper typing, but my hands aren't quite able to utilize the entire keyboard at the moment.

though ron did his best, i think some of his data is inaccurate. the accident was not caused by a dislodged kickstand, but rather by a piece of metal that got caught up in the wheel of my motorcycle. what happened was i took a left turn at a major intersection and the rear wheel had froze up. i ended up hitting the car door on my right which caused the rear of the bike to rise. a truck that was behind me clipped the rear tire sending me into a spin. all i was able to see then was another truck coming at me after the bike landed. i can't believe i was able to hang on all that time. it was an extremely frightening experience. i was pinned under the bike as the truck stopped on top of me. my ribs were broke causing internal damage to vital organs. the driver of the truck that ran me down had plenty of time to stop because everyone behind him already did. some people just do more dog screwing on the roads that driving. they should make people take their driving test each time they renew their license to filter out all these crackpots. after that it was to the hospital. from there on i was sudated and when i woke i was by myself at a very late hour of the night. the feeling of pain is still quite vivid.

at the moment i am exhuausted, but very determined to reply to you all. thank you for the prayers and hopes. i had been told that my life was nearly extingushed from the internal injuries. i remember the problem with my liver too. it was pumping out toxins into my system, and other organs weren't reacting too well to it. they spent several hours cleaning it out. having a good diet certainly helped with my recovery.

my outlook on living has changed drastically. though i never abuse my life, i no longer see things that i once wanted but could live without. no more motorbikes for me either. being on two wheels puts you at so much risk when you lose control or if you collide with another vehicle. this experienced changed my understanding so much that it is difficult to explain in words. perhaps over time you will see it in my actions.

i am going to try working out a system with ron that will help me complete the nsm mod i was working on. typing is just too difficult for me right now to make constant adjustments so i am going to do the work and he is going to maybe type. i will ask him when he returns from shopping. i don't see any problem with it now that he's practically doing everything else. my friend from work is staying with us for about a month until i am able to to things without anyone around to assist me. i probably won't be able to stand and walk properly for a few more weeks. so i hope after a few months i should be back to normal and get back to making some new mods.

you guys are awesome. thank you all. now it's time for more sleep.

Glad to have you back in one piece! Take your time and get well first! This should be your only concern at this point. I'm sure an experience like that is a true "eye opener", and really makes you aware at how fragile we really are, and how precious life is. I had a buddy who lost his son in a motorcycle accident in Connecticuit some time ago. He was also hit by a truck. In that State, there was no mandatory helmet law in place at the time. Don't know about now. Why in God's name would you get on a bike without a helmet anyway??

Take care, and glad to have you back:yep:

I'm letting you all know that my brother still has a very good chance of dying. One thing I have learned about the human body is that it can be unpredictable. Such is the case here. This morning he needed to be resuscitated due to organ failure. Possibly from the shock his liver wants to shut down. I sit here thinking that I am once again in risk of losing my brother. Just when everything seemed to be working out. This is all I know up to this point. They would not allow me to see him. Goddamn motorcycles.

Welcome back, Snap.
I don't know you, I mean, you and I have never talked about anything until now... But it has been hard to know that you had to live this. Take good care of yourself...
And yes, I agree, motorcycles are WAY TOO dangerous... Cause cars / trucks / bus drivers do not even watch out for motorcycles. In fact, I think that riding a motorcycle = risking your life, nowadays...

Some will say that life IS risk...
Well, that's true in some way... But I'm really not in a hurry to die faster.

yeah, motorcycles place your life in greater risk than it already may be. they are often unoticed on the road by larger vehicles or by careless drivers. my cycle was a few months old and i was just getting used to the motorized two wheel thing. the experience of being struck while driving one is a memory i wish to forget.

the last few memories of the accident are just of loud sirens and people chattering to me. my guess is that they were asking to see if i was alright which i obviously was not. even now i still feel a little disoriented as my injuries are still healing and the reprocussions are still well apparent. i completely feel and look like crap. my whole body aches like a sob now that i am able to get up and move around. being trapped in a bed for such a long time left me unable to experience the aches, especially after waking up. they got me doing some simple exercises to help the recouperation process. i squeeze a ball to strengthen my hands so that i can type without using two index fingers.

you know, the thing about death is that it would've happened and i wouldn't even have know it did. in that situation i was unaware of the seriousness of my condition nor was i concious enough to understand that i was dying. i honestly have no fear of dying from what i went through. you come so close to death that what you got is life many times over.

i have to go in for a checkup tomorrow afternoon for more scans to see how i'm mending internally. aside from the stiff joints i am good for that. my bro said that the mod can also wait. i read someone else was making one anyway and if one doesn't exist before i am good enough to continue, then i will do so. see you guys tomorrow.

Hey hey hey! Welcome back, trooper!

hey you. thank you for the great words of inspiration. when ron relayed the information to me about what people were saying in my mail box and the couple forums i visit, it really gave me more will to stay alive. sadly though, those words were at times completely forgotten under the strain i was enduring. no matter how much you fight to live, reality sets in and the fact that injuries can be too severe to recover from. living a healthy lifestyle is important to quick healing. the longer it takes for your body to heal, the more chance that your body is going to shut down from what it has to endure.

i do not want to see anyone go through those hardships.

Welcome back Snaptrap. Great to have you back.
Forget the mods, get yourself A1 again. You modders improve the game again and again. Thanks to the work that you all have done, it's made the game 100 times better. There's no rush to get back to modding work (unless it helps you get through the day).
It's not the modding work that matters most to me. It's the fact that I can ask a question (however dumb or obvious it may be), and a complete stranger from Arizona or Andalusia will get on the forum just to help guys like me out. We all appreciate the fact that the modding community is there behind us, there to support us when the day is darkest. Good people there for each other. People from all kinds of social, political, etnical, religious backgrounds. The thing they have in common is not subs or u-boats or computergames. The thing they have in common is that they are decent people. You have helped me when I had an install problem, it's not forgotten. You are one of those decent people.
Good luck to you and Ron and all around you.

Richard is no longer with us. His liver had failed completely a few days ago. Whether or not he was in the hospital would not have changed anything. There was not much that could be done for him except hope that this organ would be able to function normally. Some things just don't work out the way we want them to in the end. He did some final work on his Silent Fire program for the sub game before the weekend. Then we were going to work on something else together. Once I figure out how to upload his creation to the site he uses I will put it there and update thee thread he created. A few friends and I will be editing the readme page to include some information to honor my brother and the work he put into that program.

May your brother find peace, Ron... Here comes the hard time, but you're not alone, some know how you feel now.
In this time of sadness, I'd like to share a poem with you.

Our little hour, how swift it flies
When poppies flare and lilies smile;
How soon the fleeting minute dies,
Leaving us but a little while
To dream our dream, to sing our song,
To pick the fruit, to pluck the flower,
The Gods - They do not give us long,-
One little hour.

Our little hour, how short it is
When Love with dew-eyed loveliness
Raises her lips for ours to kiss
And dies within our first caress.
Youth flickers out like wind-blown flame,
Sweets of to-day to-morrow sour,
For Time and Death, relentless, claim
Our little hour.

Our little hour,-how short a time
To wage our wars, to fan our hates,
To take our fill of armoured crime,
To troop our banners, storm the gates.
Blood on the sword, our eyes blood-red,
Blind in our puny reign of power,
Do we forget how soon is sped
Our little hour?

Our little hour, -how soon it dies:
How short a time to tell our beads,
To chant our feeble Litanies,
To think sweet thoughts, to do good deeds.
The altar lights grow pale and dim,
The bells hang silent in the tower -
So passes with the dying hymn
Our little hour.

And that's pretty much it I guess. We're just preparing arrangements for Richard. I was going to request the deletion of some of his activity accounts around the net but then thought to leave them as a remembrance of what he might have meant to others. Let them see what kind of person he is. After things are tied up though I probably will request the deletion of all his forum accounts once there's no longer any purpose to having them open. Very Sad, Started reading as was like he made it, then......

We will all face loss and the pain it brings, eventually someone will pain over ours, it's just hard to accept when they're so young. I've lost a parent, a son before his first birthday and a brother...They will always be a part of who I am, as he will to you. In your pain, try to remember the good times....It really hurts at first, but it will see you through in the end.

He will never be forgotten and his legacy will be with us forever.

With a great respect to you (brother of SnapTrap) and SnapTrap, I salute to both of you.

the only way to desribe this forum is were one big family we all help each other here and when someone here goes its like losing a family member we all have been here for so long and the new ones that join well were lucky to have them too because submariners are a breed all by themselves they have more guts than anyone and i would go on a patrol in a heartbeat no questions asked

Seems like each time I return to these forums, I keep coming back to this thread. I miss my brother so much! When reading the posts my brother made here, I feel closer to the memories I have of him. I keep thinking to myself "this is where he spent his final days, he was here". God, it's been so painful recovering from the loss. For a while I forced myself to believe that he was alive but just living far off somewhere else in order to cope. I come here once in a while to see how things have changed and to remember. People have sent many emails to his hotmail account requesting help with his mod. I want to work on that mod again, and though I've gotten good at modding over time, simply looking at his mod makes me cry.

I know that feeling. I lost my father 9 months ago and sometimes I just feel the urge to be where he has been. Although it hurts to look at things he liked or where he spent a lot of time (like his workbench in our cellar) it is also a relief at times that helps to keep the good memories.
I wish you strength and good luck in recovering from your loss.
