I guess if Kaitens are a good choice as standar torpedo in Jap subs cause realism incompatibilities.
1. Kaitens are bigger than a normal torpedo.
2. All kaitens were designed to be launched from either the deck of a surface ship or the deck of a submerged submarine (93 torpedo was deck launched from the surface).
3. Having a very limited depth capability themselves, the kaitens restricted the diving depth of the submarine itself.
4. A submarine carried three to six kaitens, which ones only the type1 was used operationally which looks like a midget submarine.

that's why I made them expensive in my IJN Torpedo mod.
I gave them all the characteristics of a real Kaiten : explosive, range, speed; they are based on a homing torpedo, but alas ! they have to be fired from the torpedo tubes....
Believe me , if I could, I'd set up a dummy tube on deck, one more "fire" button, and have them leave from there, but I'm not that good at modding.

Maybe one day. By now at least, being a suicide torpedo could be limited to the final stages of the WW2 or reduce its avaliability? :hmm:

will do, only 1945 then ?
November 20, 1944, was the first attack made by submarine launched kaiten.

The sooner the Americans come, the better...One hundred million die proudly.
- Japanese slogan in the summer of 1945.
:up:
On a sidenote, "Suicide Submarine" by Yutaka Yokota and Josepf D. Harrington tells the story of the Kaiten. Yutaka Yokota was trained as a Kaiten pilot. However while he was selected to go on missions, he kaiten was never one of those launched against US ships. Joseph D. Harrington also co-authored another book "I-Boat Captain" with Zenji Orita. Orita was the captain of I-47, one of the Japanese submarines that launched the first Kaiten attack on November 20th.
Both books are excellent reading for those interested in Japanese submarines.

I chose this interval :
AmmunitionIntervalOptions13= 1944-09-01, 1944-10-01, 500
AmmunitionIntervalOptions14= 1944-10-01, 1944-11-19, 400
AmmunitionIntervalOptions15= 1944-11-20, 1944-12-01, 300
AmmunitionIntervalOptions16= 1944-12-01, 1945-09-01, 125
Volume= 1
I know that the first attack was on nov. 20 1944 (thanks Takao) but they must've been carried before that, so I thought a couple months would do. Tell me what you think.:-?

Kaitan has a great range or warhead when compared to other torpedoes of the era, however, it is very unreliable, since it is produced by the declining Japanese industry, furthermore, it usually leads to a very low survival rate to those ships which fires them. So, I won't bother with them and stick to the ordinary type 95 unless I want to die for my country in a sucidial attack
By the way, this torpedo is quite unsuccessful, 2 ships sunk only.
I appreciate your effort to include it for realism, but I won't use it:D and I believe the unreliabilities of it, can be included as well (for example, increasing dud rate to 50%)
All kaitens were designed to be launched from either the deck of a surface ship or the deck of a submerged submarine. Provision was made for the crew to enter the kaiten from the submarine while submerged. Having a very limited depth capability themselves, when carried on a submarine deck the kaitens similarly restricted the diving depth of the submarine itself. This is one of several factors blamed for the very poor survival rate of submarines using them, eight submarines being lost while sinking only two enemy ships and damaging some others. A submarine carried three to six kaitens.
The date I gave was correct, but going back thru Orita & Harrington's book, the actual sailing date was November 8, 1944. Up until then the Kaiten had only been used for training.
