http://www.carbonbelchday.com/

Forgive the aggressive title, but what else to say about this non-brainer? This stunt really does not motivate not to start a rant on America. I know that it is only a part of the population, nevertheless the ammount of stupidity and unscrupellousness in this campaign is breathtaking. If the european discussion on energy saving light bulbs I see as hysteric and hectic actionism missing the centre of the problem, then this Belch Day is straightout braindead, and compares to the last uncontrolled convulsions of a dead body whose head has been cut off, while the dead face is still grinning.

Why I said unscrupellousness? Because by random chance, and no intention of course, it is taking place at the same day congress will have a main debate about the Climate Security Act.

Once again lobbies and brutal egoists who do not mind for a world and generations that need to live on after they themselves have died, have flexed their muscles and spend a lot of money to start a campaign to influence public opinion and people's minds. As the president of this campaign put it: in order to free their minds from the guilt Al Gore tried to harass their lives with.

Well, that Al Gore is an evil wacko, as we all know, right!? Compared to him, George Bush is a saint.

Kierkegaard once wrote: "It happened that a fire broke out backstage at a theater. The clown came out to inform the public. They thought it was just a jest and applauded. He repeated his warning, they shouted even louder. So I think the world will come to an end amid general applause from all the wits, who believe that it is a joke.” - CO2 Belch Day, and the way climate debates are being distorted, are perfect illustrations for how damn right Kierkegaard was.

I think stupidity is a highly infectous desease, and patients should be put under strict quarantine.

First of all, the word is unscrupulous.

Second Grassfire.org is an internet based "petition" site that most people rightfully have never heard of. They are stationed out of Chesapeake, VA. They have been active for less than six years.

Third, clearly the Carbon Belch Day is meant as a satire with the covert intent to collect your name and address for the Grassfire mailing list. No intelligent person reading the Carbon Belch Day pages would ever confuse this with anything legitimate.

Must be a slow news day for this to get any attention

Skybird

A satire only, you say? They claim to have collected 100.000 signatures so far (they claim) - in a shorter ammount of time than Al Gore collected a comparable ammount of signatures for some other counter-petition on the issue that he had started. I was aware of grassfire.org, and checked them out before posting (small print on the Belch Day site, at the bottom), it gave me a very bad impression of them. However, I fail to see this Belch Day being satire only. Somebody meant it serious, I think, and tries to twist some minds.

I stumbled of grassire twice of three times before, to, so I suppose the site is not so totally unknown at all, but is embedded into a greater context of politcal camp fights and agendas.

Some people wouldn't know satire if it hit them over the head with a 2x4. I'm just sayin'...

Platapus
05-29-08, 03:52 PM
And what would 100,000 internet "signatures" do?

Those and $5.00 may get you a starbucks.

I follow political issues and polls pretty closely. None of them has ever used Grassfire.org as a source nor would I imagine they would.

They could get 100,000,000 internet "signatures" and it still would not mean much.

I really can't see any Senator changing the way he or she will vote based on what Grassfire.org says.

They simply are not that important.

Post title doesn't offend me. I have had far worse said to me, up into my face. I admit, the initial shock is a bit hard to swallow. I grew used to it, but i also grew bitter. Countries like Korea, Bosnia, and other assorted places , can all rot in hell and become victims of genocide for all i care. Not that it would ever happen, but seeing Korea being overun by the DPRK would bring a smile to my face. I can see it now, "where are the American's?! Why aren't they helping us!!" That thought makes me grin ear to ear when i think of all the schitt i've had flung into my face.

I knew that a certain gang around would take the title queer, but that it now is the only thing being discussed here is something that I take queer now.

Take note that I relativised the title already in the first and third sentence of my posting. And if you are in support of this Belchday, I fully stand to that title nevertheless. becasue it IS a stupid thing - and not only provokes but makes mockery of other people not agreeing with the thinking and policy behind it.

that the title discussion dominates over discussing the issue - which is an offense of healthy reason, and the people being adressed - I consider to be a queer order of priorities. Like some people also seem to reject environmental protection for only a principle reason to never do what others "have told them to do".

So I feel somewhat happy that I was away all day and night and missed how this "discussion" unfolded. If it would have been a title like "Stupidity made in the EU" - which I repeatedly indicated in other threads, too - probably nobody here would complain.

Not disagreeing with what? A thread title, or the content of a stupid campaign website? Some people here are snapped, because bad boy Skybird used the words "stupidity" and "America" in one sentence. If I were American I would snap if some of my countrymen fire up a website like Belchday - and by that show me what a total brain-amputated idiot they think I am, not to mention that they add to the already very bad reputation of america regarding environmental protection policies, and attempting to prevent these at any opportunity possible.

The thread title is not offensive to Americans - they should be offended that the makers of Belchday dare to to tell them into their faces how stupid they think Americans are - and getting away with it.

The reason they stay at teh top is maybe because you all respond to them, whereas his many posts about germany and other european issues just die since no one cares.

Face it. You love it. You, and many others, cannot resist them.

Because "it" is singular, implying a single subject, post or thread.

Besides you're demanding that I provide a specific phrase, another cheap debating tactic, whereas you know that i'm talking about meaning and intent. The title of this thread and his subsequent replies clearly shows his intent is to be provocative and insulting.

Letum
05-30-08, 10:53 AM
It's a little more fundamental than a "cheep debateing tactic".

If you are only getting SB's "meaning and intent" by reading between the lines, then
that is your reading that is causing you to get upset and not SB's writing.

A really cheep debating tactic would be to point out that there is only one 'e' in
"debating", but of course I would never stoop to such a low level; I make enough typos
myself. ;)

Sorry, that was a bit over the top on my part but for the record I didn't spell cheap or debating with two "E"s Letum. You did.

In any case one doesn't have to read between the lines to get the insult in "Stupidity, made in the US".

In any case one doesn't have to read between the lines to get the insult in "Stupidity, made in the US".
Well, it (the website) is, arguably, stupid and it is made in the US.
It is also about a predominantly US attitude to carbon, all be it at the extreme end.

But as I said:
Whilst I don't think the topic title is "offensive", I do think it is a little ironic to use the

I try to apply the same standard, regardless of country. Well, yes, and that's quite right.
However, this topic title was not a generalization.

It just said that there was something stupid from the US and, arguably, there was.

I did not say "America is stupid" or "All Americans are stupid" or "this is typically American".
