View Full Version : how do you change ships draft?

i noticed the CL Naka Light Cruiser was sitting a little too low for the waterline and looking at the ship it doesnt seem the waterline is wrong so i wanted to raise the ship about half to 1 meter higher in the water. i opened the sea folder and found the naka file, then in the cfg file i changed the draft from 5.1 to 4.1 but nothing changed in the game. i tried 6.1 and still no change so i put it back to 5.1 were it started.
i restarted the game each time i made changes but i cant seem to get the ship to sit a little higher in the water. what am i donig wrong?
i would like to learn how to do this as i saw a few other shis that look a little high or low.

Try the .sim file. Maybe changing its displacement will do the trick.

Change the draught in the sim and cfg files to match.

I think submerged draft is depth TO keel at peridepth. (I think)

Mikhayl,
If you look at some stock ships in SH3 you'll see the cfg files controlling draught.
Check the sims and there is no setting that matchs the cfg.
Also, put on water is not set to true (1)
There is the Sinking Ship Bug you read about.
If you set the cfg draught but don't adjust the sim to match?
You get other off springs of the Sinking Ship Bug.

I've not noticed the problem of the Sinking Ship Bug reported for SH4.
Perhaps the main controller was adjusted for SH4?

well i think im in over my head here because nothing i try seems to work.
this is the naka sitting low in the water:
this is another cruiser like the naka showing the correct water level:
i opened the sim file and tried raising the draughtsurfaced from zero to 1 and the draughtsubmerged
number from 14 to 13 and the ship ended up sitting on top of the water as seen here in this picture:
now there is not much in the cfg file but it doesnt seem to change anything.
this is the whole cfg file:
[Unit]
ClassName=CLNaka
3DModelFileName=data/Sea/NCL_Naka/NCL_Naka
UnitType=6
MaxSpeed=35.25
Length=162
Width=14
Mast=32.8
Draft=5.1
Displacement=5113
RenownAwarded=235
CrewComplement=100
SurvivalRate=90
SurvivalPercentage=20
now the sim file catagories and stock settings are as follows:
catagory - general
mass = 7000
gc_height = 4
fr_ratio = 0.5
put_on_water = 1
displacementsurfaced = 0
draughtsurfaced = 0
dragsurfaced = 0.5
displacementsubmegrged = 0
draughtsubmerged = 14
dragsubmerged = 0.5
anytime i change the draughtsurfaced to anything other than 0 i get no change or the ship ends up sitting on top of the water. fractions dont seam to register any changes and minus numbers (-1) also dont seem to change anything. changing any combination of one but not the othe draught numbers dont seem to change anything either.
where am i going wrong? :hmm:

Your never in over your head.
It just takes trial and error till you hit the right combination.
If one approach does not work?
Try another.
What works for SH3 may, or may not work for SH4.
And if the controller was adjusted in SH4?
Then the way SH3 draught is done is different.
You get to be the one to figure it all out.
:lol:

Not sure, but you can try this :
set the draft as you want it in the .cfg.
In the .sim, let the surfaced draft to "0" and move only the submerged draft, if you want the ship to be higher change from 14 to 13 or 12 and see if it changes. If there no noticeable change, try to change from 14 to 0, if it still doesn't change then it means the value is useless :D but I doubt it :hmm:
Or you can do it like SH3 ships, set the surfaced draft in the sim as in the cfg, exactly where you want it, and set the submerged draft 2 metres lower.
well i changed the draughtsurfaced to the stock draft setting (5.1) found in the cfg file and then changed the draughtsubmerged number 2 meters lower (7.1)
when i checked the game it now sits at the correct waterline so the naka is fixed.
my next problem is the large and small composit merchants, one sits too high and the other sits too low. the thing is there are no tweak files for them and the 3ditor is too confusing to understand what im looking at, its all node this and node that but its like a different language and it doesnt look to have as much stuff you can change.

It's always a bit confussing at first.
Stick with it and you'll be a pro in no time.

well my eyes arent good and i get frustrated easy so its hard having patience.

EDIT: im looking for the jp_small_composit_merchant and the jp_large_composit_merchant:hmm:

Go to the Roster folder and search the Names.cfg file
you should be able to figure them out from that.

:up:
ok, well i found a bunch of names for catagories of ships but nothing that helps me out. the sea folder inside of the roster folder only has the same ships as the regular sea folder so still no sign of where the merchant ship files are. nothing there to let me change the draft on a specific merchant ship.
this is all the Names.cfg file says under merchants:
;Merchant ships
Type100=Replenishment
Type101=Tanker
Type102=Cargo
Type103=Troop Transport
Type104=Coastal Vessel
Type105=Life Raft
Type106=Survivor
Type107=Rare tanker
Type108=Rare Cargo ship
Type109=Rare Troop Transport
Type110=Environmental
ps - if your trying to give me hints to help me figure it out for myself, i should tell you im pretty daft so if its not nailed to my forhead i have trouble finding it :roll:

Hi Webster, nice to see it worked !
To find the other merchies, open data/roster/names.cfg and scroll to the bottom of the file, you have the "system" name on the left and the ingame name on the right for each ship. Add mentally a "N" before each system name and go to the sea folder to find them.
You can use the mission editor to check the ship names and check in game if needed (the names can be confusing in the ME)
When you have the good ship, just edit the .cfg as the one you already did, and then open its .sim file with S3D.
ok, this is my merchant list:
KSQ=Coastal Composite Freighter
KSS=Small Split Freighter
KMSSBiyo=Medium Old Split Freighter
KMSSKinposan=Medium Modern Split Freighter
KMCSHeito=Medium Modern Composite Freighter
KMCSAkita=Medium Old Composite Freighter
KLSSHakusika=Large Old Split Freighter
KLCSNagara=Large Modern Composite Freighter <<<<<<< the ship i need
KMCSZinbu=Medium European Composite Freighter
KSCSTaihosan=Small Modern Composite Freighter
KSSSKasagisan=Small Old Split Freighter
PLConteVerde=Huge European Liner
PLKiturin=Modern Passenger Liner
PLHorai=Large Old Passenger Carrier
PSTyohei=Small Passenger Carrier
GeAuxCruiser=Armed Merchant Cruiser
so im looking for NKLCSNagara? so i look in the sea folder for that? :doh:
please tell me i didnt fudge it again, did i do it right?
Webster

Yep that's right, look in the data/sea folder, there's "NKLCS_Nagara" :up:
ok, got it thanks for your help and patience.

You guys are not amateurs by any means!
Not a single one of us knows everything!
There are the guys that do the menu ini stuff!
That is VooDoo to me!
There are guys that do model work.
I try? But there are some artists out there.
It all comes down to helping where you can!
Regardless of which so called side you take.
If we don't help where we can?
Then we are pretty much worthless.

Well I have more fun watching you and ClayP figure things out than just about anything else at subsim. Just about the time I say "that question makes less sense than any I ever heard!" up you pop with something new and I end up learning something! Progress is made when we stop being afraid to ask stupid questions.
You know where else I expect great progress to be made? Check out snaptrap's Silent Fire "cheat mod." He's doing stupid things to realistic models, poking and twisting the computer model into places it wasn't meant to go. I predict great things will come from that which will be very important to us realism snobs.:doh:

I agree with you here.
If you don't push the game to unknown limits?
Things may be missed.
If aircraft development had taken the steps some regard as LAW
here at SS?
We would not have left the Earths Atmosphire!
Is it Realistic?
Maybe not, but so what?
You don't have to use it.
Will it teach us a few things?
Most probably Yes!
