View Full Version : Who can get a proper AOB reading on the training mission (medium freighter, OLC GUI)

Hi people!
I was just doing the torpedo training mission for some practice today (using the OLC GUI 1.2.5), and I just couldnt get an AOB reading that made sense for the medium freighter (you know, the one that passes behind that stationary Tramp Steamer)
The horizontal marks were always off the scale past the 90 degree mark. What does this mean?
Can anyone confirm this? Is this another GWX mast height bug similar to the one affecting the small frieghter?

I get AOB by moving the range too the target on the outer part of the middle wheel to the length of the ship on the outer ring, then looking at the number of marks from the center of the ship to the bow (say, 15), then looking at the wheel again and seeing the number on the inner wheel that's next to 15 on the inside of the middle wheel.
:damn:

um, yer dude... I know the procedure. What Im saying is when you do it in this case the resulting AOB doesnt make sense.
For example in that torpedo training mission with the medium freighter:
The vertical marks are approx. 6... which in this case (at 49m X2 mast height) gives a range of around 1850 meters.
So when I then drag the mast height to the length (140.5 meters), and read off the horizontal marks I read 18 marks.
The problem is that the mark 18 on the wheel is past that 90 degree point (the one were you line the vertical mast range mark up with)
Is this a bug or is there another step I must take?

Schwuppes I think you mean the Medium Cargo and yes I get the same problem. Must be an error with the mast and/or length. Either the mast is a bit shorter than 24.5m, or the ship is a bit longer than 140.5m, or both.

well you are doing it differently than I...
I use range to target aligned to ship length, not ship height to length, maybe that is the problem?

Hi onelifecrisis!
Thanks for that... now at least I know its not my incompetence.
Yes... it must be the medium cargo, I play in German and here its the "Mittelgroßer Frachter" ;)
@ Wartzay
Its the same spot anyway... obviously you have to measure the range first. Maybe if the target is moving very quickly towards or away from you one would have to mentally estimate the distance it covered and sort of correct it on the fly... but we're only talking a couple of degrees here anyway.

I looked into this in more detail and found the problem.
The Medium Cargo is 24.5m to the top of the flag, not the top of the mast (the flag is a bit higher than the highest mast). At the start of the training mission the ship is too far away for the flag to be visible. Get a bit closer, then when the flag comes into view start measuring range/AOB (using the tip of the flag to get the range) and then everything works out nicely.

Thanks olc!
I was gonna have another go at it today... but you have cleared it up for me now.
