I have not seen this flag before. I looked on the flaggen pulldown to find it, and the only thing I see close to it is the German flag(With no Swastika). Looks more like a backwards Japanese flag.
Is this mayube a product of ship mods made from the Censored versions of SH3/SH4 ?

That should be a German Flag.
Maybe a Merchant as assigned.
GWX does not use the 'politically' correct stuff.
If your flag does not show correct?
Check your installed mods.

Yep, that's the "vanilla" (pre GWX) german flag. Issued as standard with SH3 straight out of the box.

Is the lack of detail on the flag because they did not want
to show the Swatz????

That's right!
Since the end of WWII it has been a criminal offence to display the swastika in Germany, to make "Hitler" salutes, to sing fascist songs etc. I think that there are similar laws in certain countries that were occupied by the armed forces of the Third Reich. Interestingly, though, displaying a swastika in territories that were once part of the Soviet Union does not cause that much of a scandal; compilations of Nazi songs on discs are openly sold on markets here (Moscow) and Russian neo-nazis have a symbol clearly modelled on the Fascist German "Hakenkreuz", which symbol they publicly display on flags and banners.
When I was a kid, you could never get a model kit of a Luftwaffe machine that included a swastika in its decals and I don't think you can even now: such models would not be allowed on sale in the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria etc.
GWX modders and people who are devoted to historical accuracy in model making (serious modellers) usually put a disclaimer in saying that any fascist symbols, songs, uniforms etc. do not represent the political opinions of the modellers.
I have noticed, however, that although the swastika appears in GWX on grounds of historical accuracy, the swastika on ships in GWX is a mirror image one of that adopted by the NSDAP, whereas the swastika on the Luftwaffe aeroplanes in GWX are the right way around.

To display the swastika in Germany is only allowed when it comes to civic education, defense unconstitutional aspirations, art or science, research or teaching, reporting on events of current affairs or history or similar purposes.
According to law, computer games does not fall into these categories. The movie India Jones for example is art, therefore it is allowed to show swastikas in movies;)
GWX is also counted as art.....right? ;)

Thanks guys, I thought I had done something to my graphics settings or something. Although other ships in the harbor had the swastika, that's the first I've seen that flag.
I just installed KarlSteiner's NHDS2302 Tugboat which has the same flag. I notice JSGME says it is overwriting these other boats :
"Bootsmann1.dat" has already been altered by the "SH3_USS_Cleveland" mod.
"Bootsmann1.dat" has already been altered by the "Schwimmdock_FloatingDock" mod.
"Bootsmann1.dat" has already been altered by the "Fishing Trawler" mod.
I suppose the Bootsmann.dat contains flag files ? This might solve this puzzle of mine.

Thankfully your countries law makes such allowances for.....art

Hi Tuddley3,
flags are in two files: the flag.dat (for normal size) and the flagS.dat (for small size), both files are in the folder data/Library. Or modified version/versions is/are layed down in the folder data/Textures/TNormal/tex. The names are German.tga and GermanM.tga. So if you want to see the swastica, delete those files in the tex folder.
The Bootsmann.dat does not contain any flag.

This thread was very informative thanks to great forum
members.
Due to what I learned here I will be adding a disclaimer to
Silent Hunter Addict to ensure that everyone knows the site
does not reflect my views & is intended for game play as
historical as possible
History is what it is and a sim is a sim.
Hmm, wouldn't an ordinary black cross on that flag have been a better approximation of the real thing, instead of just keeping the circle empty. At first glance the missing swastika didn't ring a bell with me.

I think PC games fall under the category of "toys" in Germany & Austria, therefore it's illegal for them to contain (or even mention) swastikas, Sigrunes (SS runes) or any other NSDAP related symbols. I have the CDV version of Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord (which I purchased from a store here in Canada) and in that game all Waffen SS units are labelled "Waffen Grenadier".
I have noticed, however, that although the swastika appears in GWX on grounds of historical accuracy, the swastika on ships in GWX is a mirror image one of that adopted by the NSDAP, whereas the swastika on the Luftwaffe aeroplanes in GWX are the right way around. Hi!
The flag on German merchant ships in GWX seems OK to me, as seen in the example below, where the ship is traveling from right to left.
