View Full Version : Playing with main .cfg files

I'm playing SHIII with GWX 2.1

I'm trying to edit my time compression results by playing with the main .cfg file data. Anything with an * is a field that I've changed:

[TIME COMPRESSION]
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
*LandProximity=128 (Changed to a reasonable speed for Kiel canal)
CriticalDamage=1
CrewEfficiency=1
AirEnemyDetected=1
*SoundEffects=128 (Trying to get my crew to verbally tell me what's happening a higher tc settings)
*CharacterAnim=128 (Wanted to see what would happen)
*EnemyDetected=1 (I want it to drop back to 1x tc if an enemy is detected)
*RadioReport=1 (Same as enemy detected)
*Particles=32 (I wanted to see what would happen)
PrayState=8
HunterState=32
*3DRender=64 ( I wanted to see what would happen
Maximum=1024

I've got some questions for the smarter people on this forum.

1) I've made and saved these changes to the config file, but the game continues to only drop back to 8x tc when the hydro operator detects a contact. I want it to drop back to 1x tc. How can I do that?

2) Will changing the RadioReport field only change the "Message Received" tc drop, or will it also affect radio contact reports... or does it only affect radio contact reports and I need to change the "message received" tc drop elsewhere. I'm sick of dropping back to 1x tc whenever I get a message, but I want it to drop back to 1x when I get a radio contact.

3) Particles... what particles are these? Water clarity? Explosions? Can anyone advise?

4) What does changing the fields for Charecter anim, sound effects and 3drendering actually do? I don't see what these have to do with time compression.

5) Despite making and saving these changes to the .cfg file, I can't see any changes to the game itself, even after restarting :damn:. Do I need to start a new career to see the changes take place? Do I need to be in dock? Should the changes take place mid patrol?

Any advice or instruction would be appreciated.

dude, why dont you just use the SH# comander...it works with the GWX2.0 mods (if you drop the config file in the SH commander folder in your documents folder) and has a nice little gui that allows you to just point and click on what settings you want. I was kind of sheepish with it when it first came out but it works like a charm.:up:

I don't consider myself smart by any stretch of the imagination and certainly don't think people on this forum aren't smart but if I were you I wouldn't start tinkering around with the main cfg file unless I was smart.

What you've altered thus far is okay, but go beyond that and you run the risk of ruining your installation.

The simplest/smartest way IMHO is to try the easy way first:

D/l SH3 Commander and adjust your settings with that.

Sh3 Commander will allow you to perform a rollback operation after each patrol....setting your main cfg back to it's original settings.

If your determined to tinker with the games main files, back them up first and only make changes whilst in port.

They've been backed up ;). I'll see what happens when I start my next patrol.

Ensure to make manually changes in rootdirectory AND own data folder to get persistent results ingame.

[TIME COMPRESSION]
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
*LandProximity=128 (Changed to a reasonable speed for Kiel canal)
Yes, you can go faster in shallow water but you may die very quickly when you are off the Irish or Welsh coasts and hit one of those shallow sea mounds at x128.

CriticalDamage=1
CrewEfficiency=1
AirEnemyDetected=1
*SoundEffects=128 (Trying to get my crew to verbally tell me what's happening a higher tc settings) This affects the sounds you hear like waves, diesels, diving alarm, etc. I has no affect on what the crew says. Additionally, the game gets confused if you run this one up too high. Of course, some folks might like the sound of the diving alarm going on, and on, and on....

*CharacterAnim=128 this is your guys standing watch on the bridge or in the control room. Higher numbers may cause the video frame rate to drop.

*EnemyDetected=1 *any* sound contact will drop you back to TC1.

*RadioReport=1 This a message to you or to the fleet from BDU It is NOT a radio contact report from another boat or from BDU. The game is not "contact aware". You can make them linger longer on the screen or make them appear farther away but you cannot get them to drop you out of uber-TC.

*Particles=32 this the max TC speed that you will see smoke, fire, etc from the periscope, bridge, or the free camera (F12). By setting this low (TC x8) it allows you to run the "3DRender" at a much higher TC speed without compromising the video frame rate.

PrayState=8
HunterState=32
*3DRender=64 Free camera (F12) maximum TC speed
Maximum=1024

I'm glad you are backed up. I have a complete copy of a virgin stock game in my SH3 folder. Then, anything I blow up can be restored back to original. I have had to restore whole sections of the game when I have modded too far, didn't do an incremental backup, and a roll-back didn't work. :damn:

Not correct. Changes to TC settings are not rolled back, however, they can be easily reset to the default SH3 values by pressing the "Reset" button.

A few things:

1. Ensure that you are changing the copy of main.cfg located in your "My Documents\SH3\data\cfg" folder. You do not need to change the copy stored in your "SilentHunterIII\Cfg" folder.

2. The "3DRender" setting also impacts fatigue modeling. The higher the setting, the higher the threshold before fatigue modeling cuts out. Some fatigue models are created and tested for specific 3DRender settings (usually the default x32), so setting the value higher may have adverse effects on your crew's performance. You might want to keep this in mind. ;)

3. Radio Report <> Radio Message.

4. Certain TC combinations WILL have adverse effects on your game, the most common being the loss of speech and/or sound effects.
