After the fiasco at Larwick sub base (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=116090) I'm wondering if there are any harbors worth infiltrating (where the harbor defenses are not nonexistant)? :hmm: I'm currently using GWX 1.3.

If you have considered shore defences, surface patrols, mines, nets, shallow water, restricted entry arcs, restricted withdrawal arcs, air patrols, weather, day & night raid, actions on [in other words what are your actions going to be if: A,B,C or D occurs] then does it really matter which port.
If you think the tonnage success out weighs the risk then go for it, but remember the crew/U-boat should never be put into a position that you are unable to use the U-boats strengths, depth, decoys, and vertical manoeuvrability are all jeopardised by raiding ports.
I'm not saying you wouldn't be successful, but if a port has limited defences ask yourself "why are there limited defences"?
As you can see I haven't given you a name of a harbour, two reasons, firstly I've never have/will raid a harbour, and secondly I won't be responsible for your U-boat and crew loss if you were KIA, MIA from the harbour name that I gave you.
If you do get a name or two and you do penetrate the harbour and you do sink a large tonnage and you do withdraw and you do make it back to base, then I take my cap off to you and I'll buy you a beer at the Officers Mess.
I remember a true story of Hitler asking a young, keen, war harden captain to do the same thing ;).................he and his crew came home to a heroes welcome :()1:
My U-boat [U657] achieves the same, but this wolf stays about 30 miles from the route that leads into the harbour [known deep water ambush locations].
Good Luck...........I prey, I can buy that beer for you.

I'd have to say Liverpool :D
That's where Western Approaches Command is located (the guys that are trying to sink us u-boat skippers) and just for the hell of it
I did it once during Beta testing and survived, some good tonnage there too

I actually like the challenge of harbor raiding. The shallow depth demands precise manouvering to remain undetected and there's a joy when spotting all the docked ships and buildings that I don't get in the open ocean.
As you can see I haven't given you a name of a harbour, two reasons, firstly I've never have/will raid a harbour, and secondly I won't be responsible for your U-boat and crew loss if you were KIA, MIA from the harbour name that I gave you.
Don't worry. I won't hold you responsible if my crew dies in a watery grave.
If you do get a name or two and you do penetrate the harbour and you do sink a large tonnage and you do withdraw and you do make it back to base, then I take my cap off to you and I'll buy you a beer at the Officers Mess. Ok, it's a deal. Though I don't drink - can I have a soda instead? ;)

 good luck matey
I always had my best luck at Loch Ewe early on.
In GWX 2.0 and 2.1, I have had great luck with Scapa Flow...netting over 30kt each time...but again it needs to be early in the war...
I suggest a visit to Dover :hmm:
Cruisers, ocean liners, troop transports and floating docks
I have tried to get into Valleta (Malta) 1942, but now just hang around just outside waiting for the prey to enter or leave.

I'm not aware of any such list having been compiled other than the one in #3 (and that is from stock mind) http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1817/thinkbigsw1yo4.gif

I managed to slip into Valletta (1943) however there wasn't a single unit, very frustrating considering Malta was straddling the axis supply lines and there were 3 destroyers patrolling out of the harbor.

Calais just after the war starts is rather nice.
Armed Units:
1 - Armed Trawler (Eastern Harbour in front of the docks)
1 - French Bourrasque (Western Harbour in 1 of the docks)
Unarmed Units:
1 - Tanker
2 - Medium Cargo
1 - Passenger/Cargo
A wide variety of motorboats and fishing boats
I think there is also 1-2 small cargoes.
OTHER THREATS:
Occasional Destroyers from Dover and Folkstone and Elcos off the Eastern Coast

Hello,
just tested, there is no battleship in Loch Ewe ...
19391101 19400105 BB Nelson Loch Ewe
i was there a day after Christmas - no battleship - some destroyers and a freighter. So if this has been changed (due to realistic presence of warships in harbours?) is there an updated list for GWX ?
Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

Hello,
thanks, i found the posts (raidin is right), but i did not want to pay a visit to Oran or Suez - Scapa and Loch Ewe would suit me better ;)
Strange there is no capital BB in Scapa in '39 - ok in stock SH3, but .... and it seems the list in post #3 is not correct any more ?
Thanks and greetings,
Catfish
For IX lovers, and not only:
NEW YORK
I was there, and if I remember well, the area is clean from mines and nets. It’s a big harbour for manoeuvring.
CAPE TOWN, same but with nets, I don’t say were...
