On the TDC screen, for the magnetic or impact selector, is the I impact and the M magnetic?

Not quite. I is for impact but M is for Magnetic and Impact.

John was right, the M does stand for magnetic, but has both impact and magnetic pistols.
You might want to set your pistols to Impact when you need to fire underneath a ship, to reach one behind it. (that way it won't go off by the first ship's magnetic field)

You may want to avoid using magnetic fuses during the first 2 years of the war (1939-40). They have a nasty habit of exploding prematurely.
