Please help..urgent

Hi guys, thanks so much to all who helped me with my GWX 2.1 download problems..all sorted now.....EXCEPT..now I try a clean install of SH3 as instructions say..and I download the 1.4b patch from the Ubisoft website....and when I try to install the patch the following error box comes up :

Silent Hunter III US DVD v1.0 to v1.3 update program:
This program cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter III US DVD v1.0 to v1.3 because of the following reason : C:\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\menu\ de_menu.txt : unknown version

I have tried again and again to patch it. I have little knowledge of computers..but HUGE interest in playing GWX 2.1 I am sorry for my ignorance guys..but please advise me what to do... I have little enough hair as it is..and more and more of it is being pulled out in frustration. Tahnk you , and best regards, Jim

Try to unistall and reinstall all :hmm:

De-Install all of SH3 and then manually delete the folders of the game!

And delete the SH3 folder in "My files" or whatever it's called on your machine.

and then try again!

Install. Patch. Start a quick game. Exit and then proceed like the GWX manual says!:hmm:

1. Uninstall SH3
2. Do a search for the Silent Hunter directory which is located in the Program Files because the uninstall leaves files behind that will conflict.
3. Delete the Silent Hunter folder
4. Reinstall SH3 - the 1.4b patch should now install.

sorry guys..I tried everything..I have searched all files and deleted everything referring to Silent hunter. I have tried everything i can think of...please can you help ? thank you

First off, is your copy of SH3 already patched to 1.4b direct from the DVD? It most likely is if it's fairly new.

Secondly, if the patcher is complaining about help.txt files only, just delete them from your SH3 1.0 install. The patcher will replace them after it completes (note this is not the ideal way but it will 'fool' the patcher into working).

You are 100% correct.

About 10 days ago I forged ahead and finally installed GWX 2.0. I followed the instructions of uninstalling all of SHIII. Reinstalled the DVD 1.0 version. Attempted to apply the install of the 1.4b patch and hit the same brick wall - "data/Menu/de_help.txt: unknown version".

Research revealed to delete ALL "xx_help.txt" files. I had 3 - en_help.txt, fr_help.txt, and I cannot remember the third one. Deleted all 3 - xx_help.txt files, fired up the 1.4b patch and it proceeded to complete the patch error free. Installed GWX 2.0 and then yelled WOW! when I saw GWX 2.0 for the first time!:D

i have a piece of advice that complements everything suggested already by our friends above. if you do need to install the 1.4b patch, make sure its the right one. there are several 1.4b patches available, made different by 2 criteria: (1) whether your version of sh3 is a dvd or has been downloaded; and (2) where in the world you are. for example, my game is on dvd and i live in the uk, so therefore i use the european dvd version of the patch.
im sure youve probably got the correct version already tho :up:

Hi Mr. Bucheim,

some little questions:
what way did you purchase SH3? By download or did you buy a DVD? Is it the US version or EMEA version?
Note: for this reason there're 4 different versions of patch 1.4b. Maybe you got not the correct one.
And another important question:
when did you purchase SH3? Maybe it's already patched to v1.4b...
