Apologies for the delay... this is the "big announcement" I was speaking of during the release of the GWX 2.1 update... I've been buried in RL work and it simply had to come first.
This message is much harder to write than I thought it would be.
What a journey this has been.
I hope readers don't mind if I speak for myself here for a minute or two.
How far things have come.
In some ways it feels like it began yesterday.
In some ways it feels like its been twenty five years.
For me it has been over two years, and finally, it feels like the mission I've taken on is complete.
When I first took the SH3 box off the store shelf and thought, "I wonder if this would be fun," I am glad that I couldn't see around the corner to where that little box would take me...
...because I might have changed my mind and put the box down.
All I wanted was a little escape from the reality of my work life.
Finding and modding SH3 has made many things very hard for me in very personal ways. Truth be told, I am exhausted. I have given everything I can give... and then some more. I've tried like hell not to let it show, it has been a terribly draining experience. Managing GWX has meant dealing with an incessant stream of difficult decisions and hard choices. However, I am a passionate guy and inspite of any personal limitations, and whatever the "issue of the day" may have been at any given moment... I've given you all my personal best.
I know I've had a controversial existance here at Subsim. I've always done my best to live by my convictions and my sense of right and wrong. Standing your ground will always make someone, somewhere, your enemy... and I've made a few. Though the developmental effort to see the Grey Wolves project for SH3
through to a logical conclusion, has made enjoying its success very difficult, I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.
From the first day I set out to gather a team to build her... I had the honor and priveledge of meeting and becoming friends with some of the most wonderful people I've ever known. Collectively, we've shared a very real sense of being a "crew" and have worked very hard to reach a common goal, often at great personal expense.
There have been many times that I've sat and wondered why any of them ever followed me into a bit of hell.
The GWX project really is a piece of our hearts and minds... and a representation of our friendship.
The part that really and truly breaks my heart... is knowing that I may likely never meet most of them face to face.
I think I feel a bit what Frodo felt like at the end of the Lord of the Rings... My part of the journey is done... and someone else will have to write the next chapters of the Grey Wolves story.
It is time for me to go to sea.
Having been absent from from emergency services for a year and now I am again throwing myself into my profession, just as I have done with the Grey Wolves project. It is what I am supposed to do with my life for better or ill.
The project and team may be out of my hands, but will always be in my heart.
Effective immediately, I am retiring from my position as GWX Dev Team Project Manager.
I've met with the senior Grey Wolves Dev Teamers and we have reached a solution on the way forward.
I reserve the right to look in on occasion and see how things are going... and to leave my two cents here and there. In mid-October, I will ensure that the GWX for SH4 developmental engines are at "ahead full." However, I'm not really worried about it. The team knows exactly what needs to be done... and how
to do it. All that is needed is time.
Absolutely NO ONE needs to panic.
Otherwise, I'll do my best to keep encouraging them and to stay out of the way as best I can.
To all those who have personally supported me in the past, without being judgemental or conditional, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
~SALUTE!~ to you all.
Godspeed Grey Wolves.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/14N.jpg
<Salute> Kpt. Lehmann for bringing to us one of the finest mods ever.
When you pour your heart and soul into something, controversy is bound to follow. As a great American president once said, you can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time but, you can't please all of the people all of the time. I would like to say a big thankyou for all your hard work, SH III would only be a shadow of what it has become without the Grey Wolves mod.

I think for me being a grey wolf has been some of the nicest days of my time here on subsim. Joining the team was pretty much something I did without second thought. So for the invite and to Kpt. Lehmann and all the people who have made me welcome I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
To our new captain I say you have some pretty big shoes to fill, but I know full well your feet are more than stinky enough and big enough to do it. LMAO Heck of an endorsement is that! Thanks to this project (GWX) I got to learn a lot of neat things, got to play with some cool toys, and made some top notch friends! Real life has been really unkind to me the past few weeks but that doesn’t matter.
What matters is what is going on here. True, for me it’s a very sad day, but isn’t that just the nature of life? There comes a time when you simply have to hang it up. I believe from all I have learned that Kpt. Lehmann has earned that. Whether he is loved or hated, I think all of subsim needs to keep in mind this is the guy that began what would become “The Grey Wolves”
I could talk about Kpt. Lehmann the project manager all day long. But I suppose I want to add to his retirement here about Kpt. Lehmann the man. Over the course of the project I had the great fortune to get to know himself, Ref, Privateer, BBW, Jimbuna, Dowly, Danlisa, JU_88, and others the list is as long as your arm. I think in online communities, who you are gets lost. Or skewed into something else, makes us something we are not. Much like when Spider-Man donned the Black Suit, it changed him.
That is what happens to us all when we log into subsim. You all know Kpt. Lehmann the Black Suit. I know Kpt. Lehmann the red and blue suit. It’s a crap analogy but I like Spider-Man, what can I say? Lol
I like to think that I was as good a friend to him, as he was to me when I needed a friend. Heaven only knows we all need a friend. If there is one thing I will take from Kpt. Lehmann, if you truly want something in your life or to get something back into your life that you lost, it can be done. That is the gift the Kpt, taught me.
I wish you all the best. Never be a stranger! The doors are always unlocked to you.
Love,
Penny x

It sounds like your timing is perfect, at least for yourself. What you do in real life is important. Good luck with it.
You've made a few enemies, and a lot of friends, and you've left behind a worthy legacy. From what I've seen of your team, you don't have anything to worry about on that score.:sunny:
a lot of friends
This is very true SS. No one outside of the team can realise how close the team really is. I've said this trillions times before, but I say it again; I consider all of them as my friends. I've been in touch with the team for almost 2 years and they are a really great bunch of guys (and Penny)!

S! KPT. Lehmann, on a job well done under difficult conditions. Even without RL to deal with, GWX was a monumental project. You and your team brought SH3 up to what it should have been when Ubisoft released it.
GWX is the "base" for most of the other modders who have added so much to this sim.
Good luck and congrats for seeing GWX through to the end.

Kpt. Lehmann - I too want to add my thanks for all the long hours and hard work you encountered when guiding the GWX team on the long voyage to get 2.1 out. I am only a humble user of the GWX product and I thank you and every member of the team for expanding my SH3 experience.
Good luck in your RL endeavors and God Speed! Cheers!
Kapt. Lehman.
What you have achieved is quite incredible. I have nothing but admiration for people like yourself. For many of us GWXing has become a way of life.
Balz and his singing twirlers joins me in saluting you, wishing you a good rest and success in your other endeavours. We know you'll be around.
Viel dank, Herr Kpitan.

Kpt, You are great guy and it has been a real privilage to work with you and be apart of the team.
I would wish you luck for the future and all that - but that the kind thing people do when they part ways, I hope this is not entirely the case.
Well one of the few times I have been on Subsim lately and I see this thread. Well done Kaptain Lehmann it was a pleasure to be on the team as a beta tester with ouy and everyone else. Godspeed on your career as you will be doing something truly worthwhile.

Kpt Lehmann,
Thank you so much for what you have given (freely of yourself) to the rest of the community, with your leadership. Modding itself is time consuming and difficult. Trying to lead a group of talented artists in such an endeavor can be brutal. However, I think your work speaks for itself - it is a masterpiece, and has turned SH3 into the game it was meant to be from way-back-when Aces of the Deep came out. I thank you for your leadership and for your selfless gift of time. Gluck auf, Kpt Lehmann - may life give you all that you deserve, and a touch extra.

Vaya con Dios, mi amigo
When Kpl L asked me to help with the GWX, I had some free time and no knowledge of computers or how games were made made and developed, so I said yes and hoped to learn something. Little did I know what I was getting myself in for. A lot of work and a lot of time spent.
What did I get out of it? A great group of friends who lent me needed support and empathy when I encountered personal stress and ongoing severe familial illness; an understanding of games and computers as well and an escape from my troubles for a brief moment. All from a silly $40 game!
Kpt L. thanks for all you have done.

I greatly admire what uou do--you literally save lives, ease suffering, and help people.

I'd like to second that, KL's real life job is something that we can all admire. Paramedics are every day heros and its certainly not an easy job. :yep:
As I read all (yes I do mean all) of the tributes that have come before mine, I cannot help but feel the love and sadness in the air at this moment from so many people. So, I wish to brighten it up just a hair. ;)
Kpt L,
GOOD RIDDANCE! Had it not been for your incessant, inhumane treatment of all of the GWX team - they would not have made this relatively easy, almost comical and arcade-like game SO DARNED diabolical! Airplanes that actually drop BOMBS on you during TRAINING? Subnets that won't let you get into the harbor? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!
Then, if that was not enough, you and your group had to create such beautiful ships, waves, and other scenery where I felt compelled to leave that silly box unchecked and reduce the amount of renown I got for sinking all of those ships. Speaking of renown - you even took away the easy stuff! No more renown unless I sink something? Just FINDING the place in 1943 and 1944 was hard enough...that should be worth SOMETHING! :yep:
So BEGONE with you. Back to real life where people get stranded on lifeboats at sea, thrown into the air when something explodes, and are consumed by fire. BEGONE to a world where with one push of a button, someone can turn right instead of left and crash into a solid brick wall. [Wait a sec...isn't that where he was?...never mind.]
In case you hadn't noticed...you are stepping from the frying pan into the fire. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
On a more serious note:
Time Well Spent Sir!
Message Written like a True Texan!

Don't know why i should thank you Kpt. you have cost me a staggering waste of hours playing a bloody computer game. You've been cranky, obstinate, autocratic, despotic, and outright hostile, KL! :stare:
Then again, so were DaVinci, Michelangelo, Picasso, Mozart, and Socrates. ;)
Thank you for the love that drove you to bring us all such a wonderful gift.
I speak not merely of a mod for a video game but the sense of community that binds us all together with GWX as the mortar. You've built a beautiful house, Lehmann, and it's been a home for many happy kaleuns.
-------------------------------
Holy Lindberg Law! Kapitan Lehmann has been kidnapped, Wolf-Man! Who will lead the Grey Wolves to a safe harbor now?
This evil deed has been done by none other than the Realitor, Wolf-Boy!
Huh?!? An evil homeseller did this??
No, Wolf-Boy. I said Realitor, not realtor! His powers warp and alter life itself, changing the fates of men! We're powerless to stop him!
Oh no! What'll we do, Wolf-Man?
We must find a new leader for the Grey Wolves, lest they too fall to Realitor's wicked will! I know just the man for the job, that superior sasquatch, the battling bear who knows no surrender, BigBoyWooly!
But, what of Kapitan Lehmann, Wolf-Man?
There is only one power left that can at least blunt the sharp edge of Realitor's detouring of destiny, the friendship of comrades! Quickly, Wolf Boy! Let us arm ourselves with the Wolf-Buddy™ life prevservers!
How are these supposed to work? We're not even in the water, Wolf-Man!
Ah! But these aren't for swimming, Wolf-Boy. They'll keep us afloat in the sea of troubles that life brings our way!
Will Wolf-Man and his daring sidekick, Wolf-Boy foil the foul fates set forth by Realitor? Can they find BigBoyWooly in time or will the Grey Wolves be victims of the capricious circumstance of random reality?
Find out next week! Same Wolf-Time, same Wolf-Channel!
----------------------------------------
End of an era.
There's been too many goodbyes around here, lately.
You will be missed.

I know just the man for the job, that superior sasquatch, the battling bear who knows no surrender, Big Wooly Boy!
Can they find Big Wooly Boy in time or will the Grey Wolves be victims of the capricious circumstance of random reality?
Find out next week! Same Wolf-Time, same Wolf-Channel!

End of an era.

It does suck that Kaptain is retiring. I hope he pops in at least once a week to say hello or to post in "Unofficial Screenshot" thread. Or maybe some sneak peak from new GWX project. ;)

Kpt. Lehmann?
I do not know this man - as I may know a friend; but I know that he has touched many lives and left them the better.
I do not know this man - as I may know a colleague; but I know that he is steadfast to his vision and unstinting in his efforts.
I do not know this man – as I may know some others who bear the burden of responsibility; but I know that he has carried his heavy load with strength and courage and selfless devotion.
I do not know this man – as I may know some who have been the subject of harsh words; but I know that he has ever been slow to anger and has never allowed his mighty passion to overcome his reason and sense of fairness.
I do not know this man – as I may know others whose decisions affect my life; but I know that he is possessed of that unique ability to lead, to bind disparate individuals to a driving vision; ensuring that each is valued and that each has room to exercise his, or her, talents to the full.
I do not know this man; but I do know what he has been central to achieving; and I believe I understand, in some small part, the price he has paid for that achievement. I feel immensely privileged in and humbled by that knowledge.
Thank you, Kpt. Lehmann, friend and benefactor to us all. May fair winds, kind seas and safe harbours be ever yours.

Hello,
i would also like to thank Kpt. Lehmann for the time and dedication he put into this project ! It is not only to improve or invent a new mod, but to offer an easy-installable package with lots of "mods" that work together without breaking another. This GWX project is more a new game than a mod. Thanks a lot Sir, and good luck for you and your plans ! I hope you will still come around if real life lets you,
greetings from Germany,

A salute from me it will sound more like

Kaptain! Many thanks for everything that you did for the community and GWX. I can imagine that you hand over control as it will have taken a lot of your free time. Again thanks for leading the GWX-project which created a fantastic experience to SH3. I would not game without it.

Good luck Kpt Lehman. and thanks for your hard work with your team mates. sh3 is a new simulator with GWX adding tons of realism challenge and gameplay and it will be remember forever in the subsim community. Now take a rest in the canteen and relax.

Kpt. Lehmann:
I wanted you to know how much I appreciate your efforts and the team's on the GWX project. You turned a game that was kind of cool but would have been gathering dust after about 2 months of play into an OBSESSION of a LIFETIME! This is a game for life!
I know that there were times that it was a thankless job. (What was it that Bill Cosby said? Something like: "A sure formula for failure is to try and make everyone happy"?) But, Sir, you are a purist and the game is better for it. You have left your pemanent mark.
I salute you.

Wow, you take a day or two off to honor your mother and her sacrifices and look what takes place ...
What could any of us say to Kpt. Lehmann and the GWX Team for the gifts they have provided us all (though I couldn't help but agree with NealT's expression of frustration with regard to game play thanks to KL and the GWXers ... jk :rotfl: ).
They began with a computer game and started its evolution on a path from an explosion of individual creativity to the distillation of a global community of team players whose one goal was to formulate a challenging and unique immersive experience that will always be relevant and entertaining. Mission accomplished shipmates!
I purchased SH3 several years ago (sight unseen and without any knowledge of its game play) simply because I enjoyed playing "Silent Service" many years ago. The original SH3 was interesting and kept me playing for the first few months, however it was stumbling upon this forum by accident one evening and attempting the installation of my first MOD (Sheesh, I can't even remember what that first MOD was.) that has held me hostage day and night for the last two plus years. I have said it before and will once more, with extremely few exceptions, this is the one and only piece of computer software that I continuously involve myself and continue to enjoy hour after hour. It was the best $30 I can remember spending. All of this I owe to Kpt. Lehmann, the GWX Team and each and every one of all of you MODers. I can only imagine what an enormous effort put forth to keep the project of this size and scope on track through all the successes and near misses and to maintain all of the personalities pulling in the same direction to achieve this fantastic goal. It requires a very special "leader" (Roosevelt, Churchill, Eisenhower, Nimitz, Montgomery, Raeder, Donitz and ... Lehmann).
It is, afterall, a game (though it hardly seems as such sometimes). Though the baton is being passed to what I am sure will be the much more than capable BigBoyWooly, I too right or wrong, feel as though the end of an era has been reached.
Best wishes and deepest thanks to Kpt. Lehmann for all he has contributed here, however the contributions of he and his ilk in RL is of greater relevence to the greater good of so many.
If I can remember accurately the closing statement in Myst IV; "... as great as the sadness in the closing of one chapter, greater the level of hope in opening the next ..."
Thank you, Kpt. Lehmann and welcome to the next chapter BigBoyWooly and the remaining and future GWX Team members.

It was a shock when I discovered you are retiring. I remember the day you invited me on to the Team and what a journey it turned out to be. Unfortunately due to personal problems, I haven't been able to participate with the GWX project but I salute the wonderful Team and yourself and wish you good health and happiness with everything you do.

Good luck Kptn Lehmann. What you did in managing the GWX project will never be forgotten, and should be an example for the projects to come. I understand full well that now you must do something else - in your own interest. Mods are addictive and there comes a time when you are burnt out and just can't take it any more. Great if you have the guts to draw the conclusions and detach yourself from it.
Having bigboywooly take over is an excellent choice. never seen someone else who had so much patience and such a good heart

All the best of luck in the future. Thanks for your ceasless efforts with the Grey Wolves projects.
Back when I started playing SH3, I had no idea what mod to choose. I barely knew what a mod was.My intuition told me the Grey Wolves mod. I'm glad I stuck with it. Since then SH3 has evolved into a monument to the servicemen on all sides that sacrificed so much.
Your dedication to realism has made a very entertaining game into a very entertaining game that is ALSO an informative educational tool (especially the GWX manual). It also has the added advantage of giving me the opportunity of being able to blow the crap out of something in the privacy of my own home without too many complaints from 'She who must be obeyed'!
Have enjoyed reading your many contributions to the forum, not always agreeing 100% but always respecting your point of view. Thank you for that.
Hope that all works out well for you in R/L. Good luck and good wind.

Honestly, the GWX mod is the best, most detailed, most realistic mod made for any game, ever.
Ever.
Thankyou so much all you guys. I bust my arse for my family 5 or 6 days a week, I get about 2hrs a day when I can do what I want, and 3/4s of that is taken up with dealing with kiddies. I'm not complaining about R/L, I love it, I'm just telling you a fact - GWX is bloody fantastic.
Your labours have been appreciated by many, I'm sure.

To everyone:
Thank you for your good words and thoughts. It is rather overwhelming reading them all... and I feel more than a little sad stepping aside. GWX had become an everyday routine for me... and it feels quite wierd not having "GWX stuff to do."
Maybe if there were eight days in the week... :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:
Seriously though. It isn't a funeral. I'll be around... just not nearly as much as before. Believe me, anyone who enjoys GWX is in good hands.
Sorry for the lack of the video I mentioned in the first post. I'm just waiting on a permission before uploading it. (It will be ready when it is ready.:yep: )

I just wanted to echo the sentiments that have been expressed in this thread. Also to point out that tonight I like the word "express"
I wish you every success in your career, and that you find whatever it is that you are searching for. You have been an excellent friend toPen, and for that; my respect and appreciation are two things you shall always have.
Be happy, and above all have the odd GWX multiplayer.

Kpt. Lehmann, huge thanks to you, and your loyal team, for the massive contribution you have made to the world of U-boat simming. The thousands of hours of work you've put into GW, GWX and GWX2 have breathed so much extra life into the game over the years... The impact of this work can be measured by the millions of hours of enjoyment that the SH3 community has benefited from as a result of your achievements.
Three U-boat cheers for you... OORAH! OORAH! OORAH!
I wish you the best of luck in your career and future plans.
And to the rest of the GWX team - keep up the good work!
