View Full Version : [REL] correct interior diving angles
vickers03
05-08-08, 12:37 AM
hi, this corrects the interior inclination behaviour
when diving. no more mixed up angles
when looking left/right for command room and
radio room for all boats.
all credits should go out to Master Anvart,
because he had the original idea and made
an example mod for the type2 a year ago
but it went unoticed.
JSGME ready.

why do you have to ask permission? can't you just add a disclaimer stating that it is not officially supported by the GW team?

i tried to pm kpt. lehmann, but his box is full:lol:
if any gwx-dev is reading this:
no game relevant data was edited
in these files, i just changed some cam parameters.
changed files..
- NSS_UboatX_CR.sim
- NSS_UboatX_RR.dat
- NSS_UboatX_RR.sim
for all boats.
why do you have to ask permission? can't you just add a disclaimer stating that it is not officially supported by the GW team?
to be honest, i don't know. the subsim modding etiquette says it really clear to ask for permission
if altered files of another mod are included.
besides, it takes me a whole night to upload stuff like
this on my lame internet.

Agreed, this "modding etiquette" rules is something initially designed to give modders credit for their job, but it has developed in a way that it becomes a show stopper for further free & independent game developements. (yes, i know they will claim they stop nothing and that modders are still independent, but we all know what I mean)
If anyone makes a mod of a mod he is in his right to share his work (after mentioning due credit to the original modder) and the community has the right to download it at their own risk.
This issue of having to submit a permission request is sort of ... well.... let's keep it civilized!.
I sincerely think the GWX crew, despite deserving everybody's gratitude for what they have done for the game, should consider also how they handle this issue.
I know for a fact that Vickers has run into some problems that he is working on, so we just have to be patient!:yep:

Does this mean the Food that is hanging on the ceiling is now hanging in the correct angle?
The food has always hung at the correct angle. I've pointed that out every time someone has mentioned the port/starboard dive angle problem. And that's many times over the last three years.

I'm not sure if I'm following... what is this incorrect interior diving angle? Can someone post screenshots for comparison?
Madox58

The food uses a totally different controller.
That's why it moves correctly.
As that controller 'sees' the model and it's real time movement,
the food (or any object setup with it) will follow the proper swing path.

Any time you dive your boat; turn to the left and look at your navigator - bow is pointing down. Now turn to the right and look at your planesmen - bow is pointing up. Don't tell my you never noticed?
Or do I have it backward? Anyway, it is a problem, and apparently it's been fixed.

I hate to be the one negative voice here but this mod really doesnt work:down:
If anything it seems to make the problem worse (gwx 2.1 version).
The shots below were taken after a crash dive with the boat perfectly level at 70m, as you can see, all is not well.
During the dive everything looked roughly correct but the camera stayed like this even after the dive had levelled off.
I re-installed and re-tested the mod but got the same problems repeatedly.
+ only tested with a VIIc.

Hi, first let me introduce myself: Although this is my first post here, I've read the great subsim-boards since the days when Silent Hunter 2 was announced, and played every instalment of the SH series since release... (of course, with many great mods from subsim-members enhancing them greatly :-) And since this problem with the diving angles bothered me since SH3's release, I'm very, very glad you released your fix for it! Great job!
But concerning the bug in the screenshots:
The bug in the screenshot occurs, once you click on the CE, and continues even when you go back to the "normal" view. Once you clicked on him, you get all wrong angles in the control room, and, as I've tested it quite a bit, I'm quite sure the bug could be connected with the camera position when you click on him... (the one when the camera moves a bit closer to him, and he turns around towards the player)...Maybe this position has a few values wrongly set, and causes the whole camera-angles to become "wrong" until you restart?
Other than that, I must say, great work!
(only one minor thing, in my opinion the angles are a bit exagerrated, as when I surfaced, the camera moved so far forward that I clipped through the forward periscope in the type VII control room... Maybe this could be toned down a bit, since the angles overall seem a bit too steep...)
In my GWX 2.1 install, it works like a charm. No weird effects and it is a big immersion factor. Now it really feels like diving and rising. Thanks alot Vickers.
Installed and experimented. All is well and fine. Right angle!

i get this too on occasion mainly when switching between radio and command room.
maybe there's a connection between a modded cameras.dat, i personally don't use the one delivered
with gwx.
since the problem also occurs in Anvart's original work
(type2 boat) i can't deliver a solution right now.
however, switching rooms in 3d mode and not
using the shortcuts seems to work better.

Hi,
but what about the fact I posted earlier, how this bug is reproducable?
Once you click on the CE, the camera gets messed up, and stays that way until you restart, so I think maybe it has to do with the camera-angle when zoomed-in on him...
(this bug is reproducable)
Also, maybe the angles are a bit too steep, as, when I surfaced, the camera clipped through the forward periscope in the type VII...
Please continue your great work!

The bug may have occured for me since i was changing cameras from fore/aft control room and into the RR to test the mod, ive found that if i stay in one spot and dont jump around the boat like a crazy person, everything works perfectly, so i guess it was me that failed and not the mod:oops:
++ Oddly i dont get any problems when clicking on the cheif as was mentioned by another poster.
It seems to work fine in the VIIC. I tried it out in a new career & the only (slightly odd) thing that I noticed is that when in a dive, if I clicked on the CE, I physically "crashed through" the observation periscope! Otherwise everything looked great. The control room levelled off when we reached the depth that I'd ordered. It's a great mod. I can live with the oddity that I mentioned above. Does the mod also affect the radio room/sonar shack/captain's cabin or was I just imagining things (I hope not as I'm only 44 & I'm not ready for senile dementia just yet. :D ).

It's your problem ...
That's what I like about Anvart, he gets right to the point!:rotfl:
It's difficult to me to understand all nuances of your English ... and i have not understood your humour ... :rotfl:
But I had in view of that that...
When Vickers03 asked me about my mod (AnvartsType2_CR.7z) i have told to him the main (key) idea of mod ...
Technical details of mod realization ... it's other question (not main) ...
These details can be made by any having experience (knowledge) modder ...
In one case it is simple copying the controller from my mod with a corresponding binding to the camera ...
In other case it is necessary to reorient the camera and to adjust it ...
In the third case (more complex) it is required to change cameras-controllers hierarchy too ...
Therefore if Vickers03 has decided to repeat this solution and has problem ... it's his problem ... ;)
P.S.
I do not describe details of work since i think that my English difficultly to understand correctly too ...
P.P.S.
For those who does not know ...
In my mod i did not use cameras.dat file! I used NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat and NSS_Uboat2_CR.sim files only ... !!!
That's ok Anvart, I just love to get out the large spoon & give things a good stir!:yep:
Good to hear from you, it's been awhile, are you still actually playing SH3?:D

Sorry Vickers, getting off topic a bit, btw, I don't find any problems with this mod & I'm using the camera.dat from the Depthcharge shake mod, clicking on CE seems to have little effect but this is only while diving to PS depth, haven't tried a crash dive yet!

I do like this mod, really enhances the "feel" of being in a sub (not that i've been in one, but I have an active imagination so i hope that will do).
Anyway, i noticed the saussages and stuff hanging from the pipe were rocking in the opposite direction than they should when the boat rocked. I.e. they seemed to be doing the opposite of what gravity would reccomend they do :-?
Hope this helps....

Hi,
thanks for trying to fix this bug
I am using a GWX 2.1- Installation, and have no mods, that change the camera.dat...
I can tell you exactly which mods I am using, in the order they appear in JSGME:
"GWX - Open Hatch Mod"
"Water_Stream_for_Uboats_V4"
"interior diving angles"
"interior diving angles (openhatch)"
"GWX_ships_Buoyance&draught_mod"
"LifeBoat&Debris_v3B"
(the latter two mods are connected, and where installed after I reported the bug).
I took great care to download your mod in the GWX-Version, since I am using GWX 2.1; and I have continued to try clicking on the CE; in the type seven, the bug is totally reproducable on my system, but, as I had not much time, I haven't been able to test the other submarines as well...
I hope I could help, so that you can fix this error... (But I'm actually surprised no one experiences it as well? I have a fresh GWX 2.1 - Installation only with the above mods?)
Thanks in advance
You don't need to enable both Interior diving angle mods!
Take one!

You don't need to enable both Interior diving angle mods!
Take one!
please check the readme:yep:
you do need both for open hatch.
Honestly mate, I had no idea.
I use just the one with the (open hatch) and it works!
Talk about crazy stuff!:hmm:

Without both parts of the mod enabled it will only work for the VII boats.

Hi Vickers03,
Very cool mod for the most part, however I have found a real problem that I am sure can be fixed given the right attention.
The radio room in the Type VII's (non-open-hatch regular version) and the Type IX's twists to an impossible angle when diving or ascending and remains contorted even after completion of the maneuver.
In the meantime, as a temporary solution, what I will do is just remove the radio room files from the mod... leaving only the control room bits functional. (Until testing this mod, I don't think I've ever been standing in the radio room anyway during an 'operational' dive. Will post a screenshot here as soon as I can hunt it down.
No file in my personal installation alters / overwrites the files you modded. It is indeed a problem with the interior diving angles mod. (Using nearly 98 percent 'official' GWX material otherwise in that installation.)
Also, cheers to Anvart for helping you get it fixed this far. I think that as a result of difficult communications with him... we have collectively lost out on some good things that might have been done in days past.

@ Letum and Kpt. Lehman.
C'mon on lads, play nice and keep things above bar here and get back on track in the spirit of the great mod that has been made here. My fingers are tired from editing some of your posts.

To Vickers03 -->
???
What is it?
I think, the tilt should be 10° (big Uboat) ... 15° (small Uboat) max ... for (example) crush dive ... ???
I see more 20° ... ???
... and look #93 P.P.S. ...

Cheers Anvart.
To all observers,
I think I should clarify my post regarding the tilt angle problem shown in the screenshots I posted.
When in the radio room, looking fore or aft, the contortion is lateral... not longitudinal. The longitudinal angle appears to be okay.
Unlike the correct function in the control room using this mod, the lateral contortion remains after the maneuver is complete... as if the boat were stuck or listing to one side.

guilty:lol: i knew this was coming sooner or later,
but i had the expression that it doesn't
happen all the time:roll:
ok now for the technical part:
Anvart, i tried to rotate the whole radioroom
(in.dat file) to avoid this strange behaviour
but all i got was even more strange.
i think there may be some differences between
type2, 7, 9, 21 camera behaviour but i can't
figure out what it is. (maybe room position/rotation?)
i changed the room rotation, angles, camera position
to no avail.:hmm:
another problem is, i can't open your NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat with silent editor,
so i don't know if you changed some coordinates there.

Well, Good luck in your attempts to find a solution to this problem - if there is a practical one!!
If it's any consolation to you, the problem doesn't seem to be caused by your mod. It happened to me the other day ,and I'm not even using it!
I was in the training navigation mission. Moved through to Radio Room using Station shortcut. As usual there was the wild camera swing from side to side. This normally settles after a couple of seconds. Only this time it didn't! I was stuck at 45 degree angle and when I sat down on Captain's bunk, it was like I was laying down.
The good bit is I managed to get out of it :smug:
The bad ( and embarrassing ) bit is that I don't remember exactly how:oops:
I THINK that I went to shift+F2 and then walked through the open hatch to Radio Room. When I left Shift+F2 by using a Station Shortcut, the lean had gone from the standard view.
This had never happened before, and I've not seen it since. I just put it down to one of SH3's little glitches.
Maybe just switching camera view will correct this intermittent problem with your mod without requiring you to rewrite any camera behaviours??
@ Cheapskate, are you using the Depthcharge shake or LRT mod, these alter the camera.dat file & has this same effect.:yep:

05-29-08, 09:26 AM
No , matey, I'm not using either of those.
The only obvious camera alteration mods I've got are DD's Open Hatch and Sergbuto's Camera mod. BTW, this happened to me on a modded Stock 1.4b install.
The wild swinging when first changing station goes back to the OH mod as far as I remember. Although I never had a freeze until the other day.
Just changing the view camera seemed to sort this out.
Possibly this approach will work with the Diving Angle Mod. Don't have any plans to try this out though - I'm having more than enough trouble getting other things to work at the moment :damn:
Cheers!

Oh, by the way, been meaning to ask you for ages, do you still have a copy of Flakmonkey's original Twisted Periscope Thingy ?? He pulled it before I could get it. I know you did a reissue ,and I've got those, but they break my Anvart RDF loop activation .
Sorry to go off topic but if you can come up with the original I'd be ever so grateful:D
Somewhere I'm sure, it's 12.15 am here now so I will have a look after a good nights sleep, just got back from the big smoke about an hour ago, we're expecting a frost in the morning, so you can imagine it was quite cool riding the old beamer! (about 100mls one way) I'll pm you if I have any luck, cheers!:yep:

i can't open your NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat with silent editor,

???
Oops.
While? ... Ooh, yes, S3ditor cannot consider all cases ...
You did not look NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat file ... ???
How you did your mod?
...
I have fixed Type2 UBoat interior mistakes - NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat file, because it is the big file and not all modders can work with such file ... It was my main task ...
Tilt (inclination) was my optional task ...
This work is made for a long time, therefore I already do not remember details ...
P.S.
Now I have started SH3 with my mod ... Works excellently ...
Cameras rotate in a vertical plane along a longitudinal axis of a submarine ...

I already tried that as a part of my testing. It did not correct the problem.
That's great news Anvart, are you going to release this?:D
PS. No offence Vickers.

That's great news Anvart, are you going to release this?:D
PS. No offence Vickers.
the type2 in my mod is working just like that..
the problem is that in type7 and type9 the radioroom
tilts to the side and not up/down
PS
Anvart, i did open the type2 commandroom .dat,
but only the gwx and stock one.
i edited the radioroom rotation coordinates there
for the dummy_cam.
the problem is that in type7 and type9 the radioroom
tilts to the side and not up/down
How do I get this to show, I go to radio room when diving or surfacing in type 7 and works correctly as in Anvarts pictures though still haven't tried with a crash dive yet!

Look Cameras.dat file...
_Dummy_Cam_InteriorFore structure (hierarchy) and _Dummy_Cam_RadioRoom structure are identical...!!!
Next...
Look in NSS_Uboat7_RR.dat and NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat structure (hierarchy) of cameras (Dmy_CAMparent(_RR), Dmy_CAM_RR_01, ... 04)...
And you will see small nuance... :yep:
I have applied X-controller (in NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat) in my mod to cameras:
Dmy_CAMparent
Dmy_CAM_RR_01
Dmy_CAM_RR_02
Dmy_CAM_RR_03
Dmy_CAM_RR_04
Dmy_INTCAM1
Dmy_INTCAM2
Dmy_INTCAM03
Dmy_INTCAM04
Dmy_INTCAM05
...
Here there is a space for ideas... think and experiment...
Conning Tower - it's more complex case... (third case)!
P.S.
For the analysis of NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat (in my mod) you can use HexEditor :D
Look #95 ...
That's no good Anvart, I have heard that the power of suggestion might work ... Anvart ... you are getting the urge to play & mod SH3 again!:yep:
Did it work?:sunny:
The problem does not happen with the open hatch version of the type 7. I have closed hatch!:yep:
However, remember this:

I've never worried about the diving angles. I'm usually too busy checking the maps and guages over and over again. If it does start to bug me I just Shift+F2 and stay in the back of the control room. The food always swings the right way.
