Hi, just an idea if it can be done, as a ship passes is it possable to have it's horn sounded, this would work well as a greeting in normal weather & also in fog!:yep: The only catch would be not to have the enemy sounding it's presence! Just imagine being on the bridge and hearing the ships sound in foggy weather, would certainly add to realism!

I just remember a story in a book about u-boat war.

2 boats met somewhere in the atlantic. First boats bridge crew was unattentive during watch. Second boat came from behind... scaring the bridge crew to death with the typhoon (fog horn). :D
That was the sign for all men to always take their Vitamin-A pills against night blindness...

Yeah i would use it, if it can be done!!

I think one or two of the pitfalls would be ships continuously 'greeting' one another whilst in convoy formation, not to mention the cocophony coming from scripted harbour traffic.

Find a way around that and your well on your way to adding a valued mod http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9708/piratebf4.gif (http://imageshack.us)

I think that it would have to be applied to nuetral (or friendly) ships only within a certain distance from the players u-boat, or Nuetrals in heavy fog, just a thought!:yep:
Also could it be done randomly, say one in a hundred, every 10 minutes or so!:-?

If neutrals would have the horn, then you would easily make a decision what to atack, what not to atack?
Otherwise, don't mind me..
cheers!

Yes but nuetrals in a fog would be concerned about there own welfare, they are not trying to hide since they are not the enemy, same as being lit up at night.:yep:

Interesting idea.

Reminds me of a story a friend in the Merchant Marines told me about an air horn that on occasion got stuck. And then it would sound like a machine gun with the farts. So some poor shlub had to climb a ladder and smack it with a pipe wrench.

And then it would sound like a machine gun with the farts I try to imagine what that would sound like, but fail!
Seriously, could it be tied to Nuetral visual sensors, like when an enemy merchant has you in visual range they start to zig zag, have it so a nuetral will sound horn, in a fog this could be right on top of you, would scare the crap out of you!!:yep:

cocophony

I love that word!:rotfl:
So do I, but only when it's spelled correctly.:p

I also love the idea of the fog horn, but research would need to be done concerning the exact conditions in which they used it. I'm betting it couldn't be done properly in the game.

So once the commodore's ship had sounded two blasts on its fog-horn you turned so many degrees to port, or whatever, and when he sounded one blast you turned so many degrees in the opposite direction. from http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/00/a5525200.shtml

Well its an idea:up:

Hi,
even U-boats used their fog horn (called "typhon" here) in foggy conditions e.g. near Labrador along with the also-present fishing boats - no use for unintentionally ramming anyone ...
