View Full Version : "LIVE" SOUND for GWX 2.1. A sound atmosphere on a submarine.
Poul-Sound mod GWX 2.1
This mod is an attempt to do a sound atmosphere and situation on the submarine of more "live".
It is modification of my works for Sh3 GWX - GWX 1.03 and Sh4.
To pass a sound atmosphere "GERMAN SUBMARINES" fully I did this work in German language. English in Sh3 CWX 2.1 will not be changed. You do not have risks. You will simply commute an option in the window of tuning: Language of voices - "German". It needs to be made for reception of full effect. The main sound work is there.
Attention! For normal work of this mod you must have a good audio card.

In this mod is placed file Sh3.sdl from "LifeBoats&Debris_v2_A" (maestro Rubini)
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134988
Also in him there are the modified sounds from "Racerboys Sh4 effects" (I added the spatial sound).
It together works splendidly!
Many thanks Rubini,
Many thanks Racerboys.

Hehe I know the picture he provides about Kazakhstan and its people is... not very correct ;)
Regarding your sounds...
Well... Overall I have to say they are to loud and this makes the overall quality suffer a bit. A few of them have a kind of annoying echo. I know it should enhance the immersion and give the player the feeling to be inside a sub - but with a good card and EAX you actually dont need to add echoes to the sounds...
Another thing are the "Cargo_hyd". The sound is cool, but its never-ever a cargo ship! cargo ships are always slow and low in sound profile. I guess you mixed something up there?
I like the new Creak Sounds. Good job on this one!
The new engine orders are a nice idea. but there is a big error. he says "jawohl herr kapitän!" this is wrong, unless the player is a captain/kapitän in rank. and after that you can hear a "jawohl herr kaleun"... very confusing! oh and the loudspeaker thing...uhm... i cant say for sure, but i dont think the germans used them for orders like this. because the order was given in the same room where the engine-telegraph is. no need to inform the whole boat ;)
the "ChE_K_Dive_planes_set_for_normal_dive.ogg" is very strange too. first you can hear a "Sir!" in a GERMAN phrase... uhm... no way, never ever! you will only find this in stupid hollywood movies with terrible syncro...
(note by the way: do not use sounds from crappy movies;) )
and they talking about a water leak inside the sub...everytime you dive? mh...
Uhm ok. Ive checked the rest and I have to say they are nearly all "wrong" if you go for realism... but I have to say wow... you put A LOT of work in this and must have spent many hours doing this. Some very nice ideas (like the "identifying ship" sound when you hear him searching in the book... nice
But the most is actually garbage - at least for german speaking people - because it doesnt make sence. Im so sorry to say that.
I hope you dont hate me now...

In any case, you can improve your work with the criticism and suggestions from german native-speaking like nippelspanner.:yep:

No, no... Certainly is not present. I agree with criticism about the present German speech. But dialects are possible. Germans in Kazakhstan speak not as Germans in Germany, for example. You will excuse my errors. But sound of military German speech - it very beautifully! I listen it as not speech, but as music.
But I categorically do not agree with words about quality of a sound.
I the professional sound producer. The chief sound-designer of sound production studio of a National broadcasting company. I do works for CNN, BBC and "Deutshe Welle" (by the way). When in our country there are international forums, the congresses, competitions and greater events. I do music and a sound for this purpose. These works use these television companies all over the world.
Conclusion: if I badly do work - I have no work.
But I have work (and the big piece of remarkable German
sausage on the piece of my bread from a broadcasting company "Deutshe Welle", including)

lol Poul you didn't have to bring out the big guns... Its your mod. There always critics.
Just an idea Poul, maybe making the German community happy you could use some of your connections in your field. Maybe get some hardcore german navy guys to speak there talk and you record it.:hmm: If you haven't already done that? ;)
Your call, your mod. I have no complants, I like it already.:D But I'm alway open to improvements. hehehe.

Thanks. Good words. I am not afraid of correct criticism and I am not afraid of "hardcore navy guys". I am "hardcore navy guy" too. Because I like to float on a sailing yacht in a good wind and I dive without an aqualung on depth of 25 meters. Sounds of the sea and a underwater atmosphere are well familiar to me.
Yes. My American friends sent records of the voices. I wished to hear the present American accent from Southern States. For my work. If guys which correctly speak on the Bavarian or Prussian dialect will write down correct reports - we together can make a good German sound.

There are some very nice sounds there! Some I will definitely use, others I have different version of that I like better.
The only one I really didn't like is the 'Periscope Depth'. It's real good if you're surfaced, with all the diving sounds included, but they sound out of place if you're at 100 meters and coming up to periscope depth.

Actually, you guys should talk because with your productions skills and thomsens dedication, well, i see some common ground here.
Just planting seeds...

I agree. It is present. I have made this file for the first GWX. There was a dilemma. ' Periscope Depth ' from a surface of water and ' Periscope Depth ' from depth.
Different sound atmosphere and different orders. Different position of rudders of depth. I have tried to choose an average variant. Not so successfully.
If it is necessary for you - I can make a new file ' Periscope Depth '.

Yes. I would like to talk with Thomsen. For example about sounds Snorkel Up-Down. They are not present in SH3. But they are necessary!
I have made these sounds. Half a year ago. But could not connect to software SH3. To me promised help Rancerboy. But he was gone.

There are some very nice sounds in your mod! Certainly a professionals work  I will certainly add some to my game.
But why did you add echo to some of the sound files? The boats are crowded with equipment, provisions and men, so you won't hear any echo. I can only say this for a Type VII (U-995 in Laboe), but I guess it's the same for all boats.
In case you are remixing the sound some time, I would suggest to take out "jawohl herr kapitän!", like nippelspanner already said.
If you need help with translations or are lacking some german words, you can PM me.
Regards,
Mr. Fleck

Thanks. It is pleasant to hear these words from Germany. Why an echo? Yes, certainly in one compartment of an echo will not be (for example the Central Post or a compartment of torpedos). But between compartments the crew spoke using communication pipes. Hollow metal tubes. Therefore there will be a sound of a voice having such reverberation. So. If hatches between compartments are opened all. You are on Central Post. To you shout from last back compartment. You will hear a sound of reverberation. Even if all submarine is loaded by cotton wool.
About "jawohl herr kapitДn!". Please, I will clean it. But on submarines there were young guys. Not robots. For fun they could speak: "Captain", "Corsair", "Boss", "Father", " the Old old salt " and other...
Certainly, the help is necessary to me. Thanks. Give we shall make other files "Sounds of Engine Order" (clean "jawohl herr kapitДn!") and "Periscope depth". For the beginning. The present German voice will be necessary to me. I shall write to you PM.

I bet my a** - never ever they did this. At least not when confirming an order. they drilled this till perfection. the Marineakademie was for sure one of the hardest and most professional of its time. Kretschmer confirmed this in an interview and said that this paid off in the results during the war.
regarding the echoes. i noticed them too. often theys dont fit in place and have nothing to do with the pipes used for communications because the echoes are also inside the .wav files...
you will get a more precise review of your work soon, i have no time now. but i thought it could be useful for you and you could fix a few things in the next release?

I agree. You have won a bet. To joke it is possible only after battle. When I was very young guy I was on military service in group of confidential communication in deserts of the Central Asia. Against China. To joke there was no time. I have already forgotten it.
Certainly. I wish to change not correct files. Your help is necessary.

(This is an opinion,so don't flame at me please.)lol I don't flame. I believe in free speech.. Ya I read at the Sounblaster forum about those poping sounds. has to do with particular motherboards that don't support certain PCI slots requirements. Alot of low end Motherboards and surprising to me many of the Nvidia mobo boards too. I use intel motherboard and its old. I don't get those poping sounds. My IO controler died 2 months ago. You figure when you pay big cash for your product you would get service hay...? NOT from soundblaster. I used to respect there services and quality.. Now I wouldn't pay one cent for there garbage. Anyhow onboard sound cards are better for gaming verses the $$$. Vista has issues with X-fi cards anyhow. Cost me $600 dollars 2 years ago for this damb card and now its worthless..... well not totally yet. Anyhow IO controler for a newone would cost me $170 dollars...and that isn't including shiping and taxes. I don't think so. :nope:

I tried to find out the commands issued for a diving type VII boat (and put them in an order which to me seems more or less right). Below is what I found out (books & internet). I would be glad if someone could
correct my suggestion or add detail.
The German commands are spelled correctly, my English translations are surely not. So feel free to correct them or make them sound English.
Commander: "Prepare to dive!"
Kommandant: "Klarmachen zum Tauchen!"
Chief engineer: "Get ready to operate vents!"
LI: "Klar bei Entlüftungen!"
Ready confirmations from the differnt stations, like "Diesel ready", "E-propulsion ready", "Bow torpede room ready", ...
Klar-Meldungen der Stationen "Diesel klar", "E-Maschine bereit", "Bug-Torpedoraum klar", ...
Chief engineer to Commander: "Vents ready!"
LI an Kommandant: "Entlüftungen sind klar"
Watch officer: "Hatch closed!"
Wachoffizier: "Turmluk ist zu!"
Commander: "Flood (ballast tanks)!", LI passes the command to his men: "Flood balast tanks!".
Kommandant: "Fluten!", Bestätigung durch LI an seine Männer: "Fluten!"
Crew operating the levers of the ballast tank vents (to rapidly open the corresponding ballast tank vent and let water flood in): "Five!", "Three, both sides!", "One!"
Zentralegasten an den Entlüftungen der Tauchzellen: "Fünf!", "Drei beide Seiten!", "Eins!"
Chief engineer to Commander: "Vents are open!"
LI an Kommandant: "Entlüftungen sind auf!"
Dive Plane commands (angles of dive planes may vary depending on situation)
Chief engineer: "Bow planes down to the max - aft planes neutral" (is this English ???)
LI: "Vorn hart unten - achtern Mitte!"
According to Buchheim the sound level from the water which streams in is so high that the chief engineer has to raise its voice while he issues the dive plane commands.
Optional: "Aft section ready for dive, E-motors run ahead flank"
Meldung der Crew an den LI: "Hinterschiff ist tauchklar, E-Maschine läuft mit äußerster Kraft"
Later at about 15-20 meters depth the internal ballast tank is emptied (its flooded on the surface to allow for faster dive)
Chief engineer: "Empty internal ballast tank!"
LI: "Untertriebszelle lenzen!"
Even later: Chief engineer: "Close vents!"
LI: "Entlüftungen schließen!"
Actually I think you don't hear any confirmations like "Jawohl Herr Kaleun" (Yes sir!). As a confirmation the orders are sometimes repeated.
@Poul: I will send you some speech samples later. Since this is your sound mod, you decide what you take or leave. But I suggest you try to find some more speakers. Perhaps Nippelspanner is willing to help too, or some other German members of this forum.
