OK - for a long time it has pussled me.
All the ships from the original SH4 ver. 1.4 looks very close to the real ship. Except one....
Akita Maru

This ship does not look like the real ship. At least not in its WWII era version that looks like this one below.
Note the tall coal engine funnel on the real ship compared to the above and the funnels placement in relation to the rest of the superstructure. Allso the real Akita Maru is listed as 3817 tons while the SH4 Akita Maru is listed as 4070 tons.

Now the milliondollar question.....
I have paged through the ONI-208-J and i can not find any ship that are similar to the SH4 Akita Maru. So what ship was that model based on??

Sorry lads, but i suspect neither of the answers are correct. I'd suspect the correct answer to be something like:
The ID of the ship is the "XXXXXX Maru", or what ever the name of it is.
But yes pointy end was on the ship and in the game its an Akita Maru. That just simply does not fit with the real Akita Maru.
I bet tater would have the answer. Have you tried PM'ing him?

I've been through all 600 pages of 'Japanese Merchant Ships at War', which covers ships of the Mitsui and O.S.K. There's nothing that's a match, there are some very close ones, but they all have tall funnels.

Yeah, she doesn't look right.
*** damn - tater beat me to it (trying to find a picture to post in the thread!!) - but we've both got Tone Maru ***
hi,
i've had a trawl around the inter-web-net, space, valhalla and even some trenches deep in the abyss for the affending beast that is this particular japanese maru.
The best i can come up with - is both Kiso Maru and Tone Maru were both 4070 grt, looking at this picture (of Tone Maru):

The davits, derricks and masts seem almost identical but the funnel is taller - i think this might be the closest, anyboby else is willing to shoot this down and hopfully find the exact sucker!!

She looks sorta like Natisan Maru:

Except that natisan has goalposts, not masts.

Yea it looks like a diesel funnel.
Ill look forward to someone nailing it as well. Now i have gotten confirmation on that im not half idiotic.
I missed with 4 torpedoes shooting on this one as im using the real ONI-208-J (and a personel mod with values from it) in conjunction with my stadimeter. And as i could not find it i had to calculate by hand (8 ft. pr. deck including the freebord height = (4+3) x 8 = 56 ft. to the top of the superstructure - Where the superstructure is only about 50 ft. of height)
LOL, I PMed you that it was Natisan, then re-discovered the thread.
Doh.
Look, if they fubared the name, they might well have fubared the masts.
Toko M. is another possibility.
