I was patrolling my favorite spot when I had a warship heading right at me,most of the time going through BE55 it is usually a AI sub, well at the same time I had a modern tanker come through and they both ignored each other, niether fired on one another,it was a clear afternoon,British tanker,German sub,I ended up waiting til last minute to fire a torpedo at the tanker to see what the other sub would do,it just kept going north east.
Are the AI subs just for show?
I am using GWX 2.1-OLCE2,and some other ship mods.

Thanks much

depending on sea state, time of day, and the speed of both vessels there may have been factors at play within SH3 that prevented the two from detecting one another.

just a possibility.

AI subs - regardless of nationality - will used deck guns and AA guns to engage you and other ships when they have detected the presence of a target.

they cannot submurge, nor can they fire torpedoes, i believe GWX can make them spawn submurged... if this is the case they cannot surface, or fire any of their weaponry wile submurged.

No zigzaging at all,it was like two ships from same country passing each other.

what was the date?

are you 100% sure it was a german sub and not a british sub?

if the tanker was not zig zagging it had not yet detected the presence of an enemy unit?

was it day or night?

what was the weather like?

did you positively ID the submarine as a german unit?

approximately what distance separated the two ships?

Did the AI u-boat have his gun pointed at the enemy ship but was not firing? (if so he was out of ammo)

a lot of strage events can happen in SH3. and a lot of factors influence the course of events.

It was a VIIC for sure.
Distance was just a tad over 1000m.
It was afternoon and totally clear.
No the subs gun was not pointing at the target.

GWX 2.1 eh... what was the Date?

was it a brand new 1939 career?

At times I have seen AI units go 'stupid'.
It seems the detection routines fail at times.
I have seen this in stock and modded installs.
I've also seen units crash into one another!!

im curious if this was a GWX 2.1 brand new 1939 career as it starts in August 1939... not September 1939

if this is the case

both units were in fact neutral

well i guess this is another one for the bernard files.

Privateer offeres up the most probably explanation in this situation as it were... the AI probably just went stupid for a moment.

if it is a repeat problem, you might have an issue with your installation.

I'd say it's the 'stupid' issue.
Just now thinking about it
and the situations I've seen.
It might be related to waypoints.
As AI units approach waypoints the game engine starts the calculations
needed to follow.
Perhaps, for a time, the AI attack routine is dumped?
:hmm:
Which AI routine takes presidence?
And when?

You started in August '39 and you're in January '43 already? I haven't even started playing 2.1 yet!

Also I have 2 other questions,I know I am getting to be a pain, but you guys are so knowledgeble.

I was wondering why when you engage a ship whether it is with the deck gun or if you are spotted and then submerge to periscope depth, the ship always slows down to a crawl, you would think they would speed up.

Also, when sinking ships close to the channel, you would think after sinking a few the British would send out a patrol to find the sub.I guess I am wondering if I have something wrong,or is this just the way the game is....Thanks much:up:

i dont know... but

for me, when i sink a ship in the channel, at LEAST one destroyer and 1 or 2 PT boats come rushing in, but it depends on how far away they are. generally because of this behavior whenever i sink a long merchant close to a coastal area i run away in the opposite direction when it sinks.

i dont know why thats not happening for you

also, as far as im aware, units will speed up and slow down and turn as required to dodge torpedoes with visible wakes.

If you score hits on a ship they may slow down because of damage, if you have not scored hits on a ship, they will at least zig zag and should either maintain speed or speed up

interesting why they dont do that fo you :hmm:

Well,I think I am going to start over, with a clean install and see what happens...thanks:)

i should point out that an armed response does not occur with every sinking. a lot of it depends on the year, and location of the sinking... but the channel typically draws a lot of attention.

EDIT... you do seem to have a lot of mods active at once, i think the more you have going the greater the chances of encountering some sort of problem, but then again im no expert.

for example, im only running like 6 mods at the moment as opposed to your 30+
