German, of course, with subtitles.
Which version do you have? The 2 1/2 hour movie version, the 3 1/2 hour director's cut, or the 5 hour uncut miniseries version?
I only watch the long one these days, about once a month.
German, of course, with subtitles.

I've got a copy of the Directors Cut, I didn't know they had made a longer one.
I watch it in English with English Subtitles. It is interesting to see the difference in what they dubbed with and what was used in the text.
I watch this holy Grail of UBoot movies in German! Alone and with a decent cuppa Tea!
And not to mentoin loud enough that my neighbours can hear the IIWO yell ALARM!

German with English subtitles. The slight difference between the English words and the German lip movement in the dubbed version does my head in!
Director's cut dvd. German without subtitles. Even though my German is extremely limited it's still fairly easy to figure out what's being said. I watch it maybe once a year...
i recently bought it and watch it occasionally, in german with subtitles. the annoying thing is that the german, english and dutch subtitles are all exactly the same, and they are all NOT what is being said
but what an awesome movie, absolutely brilliant

1. Watch with English dubbing.
2. Move to Germany.
3. Learn German.
4. Watch in German with English subtitles.
5. Read the book in German.
6. Ditch the subtitles.

Normally German with English subtitles. Once in a while I'll turn off the subtitles and concentrate on the movie itself - seems the subtitles are a distraction sometimes. I can understand some German, but by now it is mostly that I've seen it so many times that I know what much of the dialoge is!
I have the director's cut (superbit), and the original miniseries version. I like the miniseries version best.

also read the book in German, took a while, but well worth it

Your a sick sick man lol :rotfl::rotfl:
In German with english subtitles, a bottle of red wine, tortilla chips and a standby bottle of wine just in case. Think I'll try find the mini series, s'pose that will be a 2nd standby bottle and some peanuts.

That is much the preferred route....that way Neal gets a small percentage which goes some way toward paying the server bills to keep the forum running http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif
German version most of the time, dubbed English when I feeling lazy.

5hr uncut version, german with english subtitles. The only way to watch Das Boot in my opinion. Can't figure how they could cut all that out to make it 1 1/2 hours long, crazy! The characters are so developed in the 5hr version you feel quite sad at the end, and no I shant spoil it for those who haven't watched it yet :p.

Fifty sweaty men having to live together in a little steel tube for weeks on end. The only real female character is 'just' the pregnant girlfriend.
Of course it's icky! Silly girl; go play with your dolls. Or better yet, go create some more cool mods for our 'manly' game.:rotfl:
Sorry, couldn't resist. The truth is, not every movie is for every taste. It's hard to make yourself like what you're inclined not to.

Interesting note : L.G.Buchheim didnt´t like it. He blame Petersen for the Party-scene at the Beginning of the film also for the Kpt´s permanent complaining about the Leadership.
Heinrich Lehman-Willenbrock surely wasn´t a Nazi but he never was so angry about the BdU and others like in that film.
Petersen´s statement later was, that he wanted to make an Anti-War-film and so he replaced Willenbrock with "Der Alte". This person was fiction.

I set my TV to go to sleep after 60 minutes. I fast Forward to the scene that I remember watching the night before and press the PLAY button and go to sleep.
The next morning I awake, reach over to my partner, and realize I re-lived Pearl Harbor. I.E. blown to hell and back. :D

Haven't yet gotten the long version, the 5 + hr version that is the best one but saw it from television a couple of times.
I do have some gripes with the film, not that they in any way shake the significant position this film has as the most worth while sub movie. For example the Tipperary song scene, for some reason I don't think the real German submariners were that keen about that song, to me it kinda sends a strange, mixed message. It's as if they were supposed to be real happy to sing that british song.
I guess it's really difficult to make a war film and to convey both the realism of war and at the same time give a sobering "war is hell" - type message. I guess the factual books manage to come closest to this. Das Boot IMO manages both and has a good cast, direction, etc. but it still leaves me with some minor gripes.

But the party scene was in the book, and the main officers had no names in the book either. The captain was called 'Der Alte' in the book, so it couldn't have been Petersen's decision, but Bucheim's.
I've heard that some former u-boatmen said that the book was not real either. I've only heard that, never read it from a source, so I don't know if it's true.

I understand that Buchheim liked the movie, but found two things unrealistic. The first was the party scene in the boat (although he thought it well done). Second, if someone threw a greasy rag in an officer's face, they would have been court marshalled.

have watched all three versions- the longest DVD minseries compilation is clearly the best- IMHO. it really gives you the feeling of all the emotions of sub life - from day after day of boredom to instantaneous spleen splitting fear !. The interactions between the crew characters is much more brought out in the long version- by the end you really get a feel for each character's emotions/demons/fears etc. and the ending is a true kick in the balls after the long ardous battle to survive Gilbraltor.

I watch the 3 1/2hr version, german with english subtitles, turned up loud with the Buttkicker Gamer turned on, so I really feel the pound of the engines and the blast of the depth charges!
Also, a few beers are nearby for easy refreshment!
Plain' German when I watch it alone
With subs when I watch it with someone not good at German
I watch it ~3 times a year, because when I watch it more often I have every last scene frozen in my head and it's not interesting.

I'm Dutch and i watch this movie in german. I understand German very well, but I cant speak it that good. I select subtitels because i don't understand every word. I mean the specific submarine words (if you know what I mean)
I have as well the DC and the mini series. I'm trying to get a better copy of the DC because the one I have has German language 2.0 while English has 5.1 and that's frustrating :arrgh!:

2. German lingo
3. 2 cases of Dortmunder beer

5. Cook up a pot of Sauerkraut and cabbage for aromatherapy along with not flushing the toilets for a week prior to movie time.
6. Let the bathtub overflow for flooding effect.

I think you forgot to mention getting into the cold shower fully clothed then rubbing table salt into your eyes
The question was "How do you watch the movie?", not "What do you do for fun?"
Besides, eyes full of salt makes it kind of hard to actually 'watch' the movie.
On the other hand, so does asphyxiation by Benz exhaust, unless you time it just right.

Original uncut version (is there any other version these days?) here. The English subtitles on my disk seem to be a bit off for whatever reason, so sometimes I go without them even though I don't speak German; depends on my mood and/or if I'm watching with someone else.
Even though the subtitles in my copy are off in some places, the worst subtitle gripe I have was when I was watching "Gettysburg", during the bayonet charge on Little Round Top. Colonel Chamberlain yells "charge!" and the subtitle says "go!".... not quite as dramatic, but I guess the subtitle-editor-dude thought the dialogue was being too repetitive
German with subtitles , i have the 5 hour mini series uncut it's an amazing film and worth every penny of the 7 pounds i payed for it from amazon uk.
Here is a link for anybody that has not bought it yet :arrgh!:

Watching it in German, but the English version is just to funny. Listening to Semmelrogge's accent is just too hilarious.
