hey guys, i'm looking for a mod i remember seeing on SH3 having but i forgot the name. The mod is when your looking at the ship recognize manual and it shows all the weak spots. I'm looking for this for sh4 and i looked on the "list of mods" and didn't see it. if anyone can help, that would be great :)

Thanks

I don't believe that there is a "Torpedo Damage" type mod available for SH4.

There are several weak spots common to every ship regardless of type though, the ones listed below were all identified in the mod you asked about and constant for all ships. No clues are needed to locate them.

1) Engine Room (Boilers) located below the stack.
2) Propellers
3) Keel - dead center always works well.

a shot below the fuel tank is always nice!

To JoeCorrado: Sir? You forgot number 4: Under the guns where the gun ammunition magazines are.;) BTW, what is the keel excatly?:-? is is like a stabilizing fin under the vessel? I'm kind of a noob sometimes.:damn:

I agree sir, but the question is: Where precisely is the fuel fank? I suppose it it right by the engine room(s), right sir? Jeez, talk about putting all of your eggs in one basket. If you get torped, you could also lose your engines... and not to mention all that wonderful fuel!:nope:

Maybe the "Enemy Weak Spot" mod (as we will now call it) could have small red dots on it marking the weak points. I think that is a great idea there you have Colwell1199. Very good idea...:yep::up::rock:

Kamikaze Krazy,

Despite how much I dislike Wikipedia, here is a link to show you what a keel is.

Maybe I'm getting blind with age, but I didn't see in that article what I thought was the main function of the keel - to provide a solid massive weight at the bottom to keep the ship upright. This is where terms like "on an even keel" and "keel over" come from. Actually on more thought, the main function is to provide a support for the framework, something like the foundation of a house, and the Wiki article did mention that.

But, that is why if you can break the keel of the ship with a torpedo (or a major storm) the rest of the structure can't support itself and it breaks in half.

True enough, although such a magazine would be much more likely to be in danger of taking a hit (and detonating) from an aircraft's bomb attack rather than a submarine's torpedo attack I think since these areas were usually burried deep inside the bowels of the ship. But I suppose they would be a valid enough target since any ensuing fire in it's general vicinity would be a very real hazard to it.

As for the keel question:

The keel (A) can be thought of as the "spine" of the ship. That is the reason that the term "breaking the back of a ship" is often used when describing the affect. Every other support relies upon the keel to provide the base support upon which they rest.

Break the keel and the ship's entire supporting structure becomes unstable and likely to cave in upon itself from it's own weight. You could also think of it as the cables that support the weight of a bridge structure.

A magnetic torpedo set to detonate just below the ships keel is capable of sverely weakening (or even snapping) the ships back. The keel runs the entire length and it need not be literally "broken" to destroy the ship. Just weakened to the point that it can no longer the support the massive stresses placed upon it by the ships own weight. That weight, (from stem to stern) will often finish the job which the torpedo attack began.

Keel shorts are dang hard to pull off. I've been practicing on stationary objects (admitedly in enemy harbors :)) and even then I get about 1/4 of them to work properly. I'm aiming at the keel line simply because I know that Torpedo's have a tendency to run deeper or shallower than they are set (darn depth keepers!) So knowing this I aim for the keel.

On a bit of a side not, German U-Boats pack a serious punch, or, Fiji and Dido class Cruisers are utterly pathetic in terms of strength. I managed to sink 5 Fiji and two Dido class Cruisers just a few hours ago with one torpedo to the front guns section on each one. So either they are weakly armored there or German Torpedo's (the Te III Electrics) are just 100x better than US Navy torpedo's. I also took down several T3 tankers with one good shot under the command deck and that did it in! I love harbor raiding! Especially with good finds like the Fiji's and Dido Cruisers :D
