View Full Version : [WIP] Alt. Font for RadioMessages

Default game font for displayed - reading messages is ok and all, but kinda on the huge side. I think it was designed to mimic a radiomans pencil writing.
Onto business; I thought they might look better if the font more or less matched the background. Found a way to get that partly done. Some changes just don't seem to take, and I've yet to try altering the color. Kind of like the blue-faded affect in the background. But here is what I have so far.

Opinions welcome.
By the way, this will not be combined with RL_E Update, but as a seprate release. As some may not want the change etc.
Edit Wanted to thank GlobalExplorer for the inspiration.
I was thinking such a mod would involve passing along an ini-config edit which would risk conflict with other mods. The way I am doing this makes no change to the menu_.

Got to narrowed down - 2 options (fonts).
First up:
This one more or less matches the Newstype font.

Second choice;

Slightly larger font, more on the arial side imo. Still looks good (better on screen - in game).
I am thinking if there is any interest in this a release to include both options.
Btw; using in-game fonts available, there isn't exactly alot to choose from. This way the mod will not edit the menu_ini and should be compatable with any version of the game.

I like the first one - it is pretty old fashioned looking.

Images re-uploaded to actual size cuts to give everyone a better idea of what you'll see. Refresh your browser if needed.
Looking to have a release by next weeks end.

Doh!
Did a search and luckily there seems to be only one message with this error.
What are the odds I happen to use it for this example. :know:

You know I prefer version 1... but there are some old sailors here whos eyes are not as goods as they used to be. So as and option for those who have weak vision that would be a good alternative #2.. My vision is fine I'm just think'n out for them old sea dudes.:up:

I like the second one best.
#1. It resembles a typewriterstyle.

Did a quick download and test. Worked fine in a naval academy (navigation) scenario (typewriter style font). Will test on patrol tomorrow.

Sounds good so far.
Once this is out the door I plan to try and do a color release as well, like the bluish-purple in the background. No promises, but with the gimp it seems doable.

Well vacation time is over but meanwhile I have not had much luck in changing colors as of yet. I suspect a manual ini edit may be nessesary but I was trying to avoid that for compatability.
For the time being if you don't mind or prefer radio messages in black text the WIP d/l is fully functional.

1st one is more graphically pleasing but the 2nd one is more 'buisness' (in a good way.) Hard choice but i chose the 1st one.

Ok I will have a release for black text ready.
Here's two screens from the smooth font in use. Keep in mind the typewritter style will be the same color - Black.

Here's the thing;
I found out how to edit the colors in the message list, the status & scroll arrows.
I can get Red, Greens, and an off-brown-tan. But even trying what seems to be the right hex colors for Blue - light-purple-blue, - it's not happening, I get Frackin Green instead. And while the reds - greens look ok and all I was trying to match the bluish text to the left/background.
And so untill - if I find the magic #'s & letters - Black text it is.
Hey, it matches the news text before the game loads this way. :cool:
Note: The WIP release did not change the list font/color.
The REL release won't directly change it either as it requires a quick menu_1024_768 edit.
