Hi all.

I am posting this totally unrelated question on here because I know there are a lot of clued up people working on SH 4 (plus, im not sure what site to post on).
My DVD-ROM drive (internal) started playing up last week (one minute it would read a DVD, the next, it wouldnt).
Ultimately, I had to reinstall XP. My DVD drive will now no longer read DVD's!!! It reads CD's fine but not none of my DVD based games will be recognised.
It will also not read any CD-RW disc that I have some very important files and programs on - I insert the CD-RW and it just spits it back out!!!
I have looked at the EVENT LOGGER and have found this related error when inserting a DVD or CD-RW --- ERROR - source - CDROM - event - 11 - category - NONE.

Does anybody out there have any idea as to what this error code means???
XP suggests replacing the IDE cable , which I have done to no avail!!!

Please help!! thanks in advance - Exponent.

That is not a major hardware problem...

Your DVD is dead. Gone.
That's all.

Get a new one. 12£.

Or at least try another one first.

Good luck!

Ha Ha Ha Ha.

I was expecting a really elaborate way of dealing with the problem and all I get is "ITS DEAD"!!!:rotfl: :rotfl:

Simple as that huh? Cheers bud.

P.S - It IS a major hardware problem when it's stopping me installing SH4!!!:rotfl:

Thanks

Dead is dead.
Deceased
Gone to meet its maker
Ceases existence

in other words acccording to Monty Python, you have one VERY DEAD PARRIOT!

So, you have checked the cables and they are good.

Have you updated the firmware of the DVD-ROM?

Also, is the DVD-ROM on it's own cable or is it hooked up as a slave to the harddrive?

These problems will not cause it to read only one disk format. Internally the drive uses different ways to drive the laser for DVD's and CD's. So part of the circuitry has died.

Thankfully, DVD's are getting cheaper. The format wars over blu-ray and HD-DVD coming to an end have helped in this. A computer based Blu-ray reader / DVD burner dropped from $300 to $150 only 2 weeks after the format war ended, and I think this is helping to drop the DVD drive prices.

So just for the record, which format will prevail in the end?

Toshiba announced they were giving up on HD-DVD 8 weeks ago. The end is already here :D

Just needed my beaty sleep!

And I'm unoffendable! :smug:

Btw. before buying a new DVD, I would try another one just to verify that the DVD really is dead.

WOW! I turn my back for 24 hours and I get a massive response!! Typical Subsim!! You guys are the NUTS!!

Tried new cables (IDE) and my dad's old (working) DVD-ROM- no luck!

Did a bit of research and bought myself an LG - GSA-H62N 18 x DVD-r write speed Super Multi DVD writer!! Sounds great huh??!! Got excellent reviews plus its SATA instead of IDE! Its a great drive I'm tellin ya!!

kinda glad my old PLextor IDE drive conked out now!!!

Only cost £18 so its great value!! Highly recommended.

SUBJECT - Didnt think u would be offended but i had to respond just incase mate!!

LARE - Thanks mate.

since you said you reinstalled windows with a spastic drive you may have issues if it was a dvd/cd combo drive. if you have seperate dvd and cd drives then no worries.

if the drive you replaced was the one you loaded windows from then there is a good chance some of the data was corrupted in the download. reinstall windows again if this is the case to avoid having strange problems show up later.

never trust a software install done on a bad cd/dvd drive.
