The initial version of the Merchant Fleet Mod is going to feature only British and American merchant ships, for simplicity's sake. I am redoing the skins for the mod (for the second time), so I was wondering what's the first nationality expansion pack you would like to have released? There were several other countries that had large merchant navies during the war; feel free to specify any country that is not listed.

I voted for all the Allies. Axis ships would also be nice to see, but on the high seas you see ones you want to sink, not say "Hi!" to.

My choice is: Norway/Netherlands/USSR (coz im Russian:)) and other. In my case "other" mean France (both Free and Vichy) coz French merchant fleet was playin' sigificant role on my favorite theatre of warfare - Mediterrenean.

Canada as BBW said earlier is a country which needs a few more ships in my opinion. But mainly any allied nation would be good due to bring more merchant targets to the table.

My vote goes to Greece. With 124 ships, it was the 5th nation in terms of ships sunk bu U-boats.

Well there should be more more Greek ships.
But every time I see the Greek flag in SH3, I ask myself: shoot or no?

The question sounds strange since the same ships could be used for varios nations since real ships oftenly look similar

You need to use separate nationalities to get correct paint schemes & hull flags. Also, some merchant navies had pretty distinctive-looking ships, such as Japan and Norway.

As i understand this mod would add to the game ship textures that are "unique" for a nation ? And would that be separete mod or will be part of gwx 2.01 (sorry i was away from the forum for quite some time and missed 1-2 things :))

Yes. Each nation will have its own group of unique skins. One of the problems with earlier ship mods was that because of the game's file system you would get British or American paint schemes on every ship regardless of nationality. With this mod, if you pay attention to hull flags, funnels, and so on you may be able to ID a ship at a great distance, instead of trying to look at the tiny masthead flag.

This is not officially a part of GWX or any other mod. However, it will be compatible with any stock or super-modded verison of SH3 - unless you are running pre - 1.4b stock, for some reason...

How many units in total are you talking about Iam ?

Say you have around 70 new units in the MF mod
How many extra does it add with the independant skins for different countries ?

Any idea ?

For the initial release there are 70 units based on about 40-50 unique models. However, the ships will also be released independently and in separate packs. That way users can download ships based on where their current career is. If you're operating in the Med you may want Greece & Italy, for example. If you're in the far east you can download the Japanese pack, and so on. That will simplify things and help keep file size & loading times down

Why on earth should we spend PC memory for loading axis ships???

I think the already existing are quite enough!

Sailor Steve

Because there are lots of cool ships to look at, and some of them have not been done yet.

Or, as Sir Edmund Hilary replied when asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest: "Because it's there."

Because looking at a C2 flying the Ge flag just doesnt cut it for me

This however as a replacement does

Except what BBW and Steve said (I fully agree as well) you have to remember that in reality a large number of neutral and axis ships did travel the oceans during WWII. I think that by seeing German ships as well gives you a sence that you're as close to rality as a computer simulation will ever allow you. After all it gets a bit boring to know that every time you meet a ship in open waters it will be an enemy one

Up until early 41 the majority of worldwide merchant shipping was still owned/managed by non belligerant nations http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

HMMM!

This reminds me the CREMER (U-333) incident (sinking of german blockade runner).

OK! I changed my mind!

And what about Czech ships? our ocean fleet had 12 merchants, one of them was (in greek services ) sunk by U-587...http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/1415.html

We also had a warship, it would be also great addition to SH... If Danube river is included there:rotfl::rotfl:

Interesting. That picture seems to show the vessel before hostilities (or maybe very early in the war), because it lacks neutrality flags on the hull.

Do you have any information about what the neutrality markings looked like? Also, forgive my unfamiliarity with your country's history but was the flag during WWII the same as the current Czech flag?

(it was meant as joke...something like swiss navy:))

From the 12 merchant ships most of them were coasters, only 3 ships were bigger than 1 000 BRT, 1st and 2nd were sold, 3rd sunk before the war.Others were not used since 1933 and after German occupation all the rest dissapeared diring the war...

The ,,warship" was captured by Germans/Slovaks an used as a battery at Danube and Black sea. After war taken by US, disarmed and in mid 60s returned. It was scrapped after 1970.

Either way it isn't important now: Yes, it was the same...
