View Full Version : [TEC] SD radar in the S-18: I need your help
Alright guys, here's the deal: in reality the S-18 boats did not receive SD radar. I am trying to reflect this reality for RFB, but I am coming across a problem. When I change the default date of the SD radar (1942-04-31) or eliminate the section in question, the SJ radar antenna stops moving. So, I need to know if it's something wrong with one of my files or possibly something with the way the game is coded.
If you are so inclined to help, navigate to NSS_S18.upc (in the /data/submarine) folder, and look for these lines near the bottom:
[UserPlayerUnit 1.UpgradePackSlot 2]
ID= UpgAirSearchRadar
NameDisplayable= Air Search Radar
Type=NULL
AcceptedTypes=AirRadars
UserCustomizable=Yes
IDLinkUpgradePackSlots= EqSlot33, AirRadarAntenna
IDLinkUpgradePackSlotsIntervalDefault1= 1942-04-31, NULL, UpackGatoSDRadar
The key date here is the 1942-04-31. Try setting it to another date such as one in 1946, and then run the game to see what happens with the SJ radar antenna mast.
Thanks!

follow the link and about half way down the page you will find
S-28 (SS-133), underway through Puget Sound Navy Yard, 24 June 1943 after a refit. She was typical of early E.B.("Holland") S-boats (S-18-41) modernized from late 1942 on, with surface-search radar (SJ) but without air search (SD) sets.
In some cases modernization came in two stages: first urgent items such as SJ radar & keel sonar, then structural items such as the 20-mm gun, elimination of the marker buoy aft, & air conditioning.
and
for the S42 boats follow this link

S-44 (SS-155), was one of six E.B. boat's extensivley modernized during WW II. The refit included installation of air conditioning, with the unit installed in the crew space abaft the control room, alongside the refrigerator.
S-44 was fitted with radar (SJ forward, SD abaft the bridge), a loop antenna built into the periscope shears for underwater reception, & a free flooding structure carrying a 20-mm anti-aircraft gun, with a box for 4-in ready-service ammunition below it.
A JK passive sonar, probably installed at Philadelphia during a refit between November & December 1941, was located on the forward deck. On the keel below it was a pair of oxcillators.

Hi LukeFF,
I don't know if you still need this or not, but I tried this and the radar did indeed stop rotating. I then did some more testing and the behaviour was unexpected. Here are the results:
With the SD radar slot set to 1946 the SJ Radar head does not auto rotate. Both the SD and SJ scopes still work, but both have lost the training motor and can only be rotated by hand. Clicking on either sweep/focus switch on the SD or SJ sets does not make the head sweep. You can however click on the SJ PPI screen to get the radar head to rotate, or you can use the home / end keys. Blobs still appear on the SJ PPI scope and spikes on the SD scope. Switching to external view after changing the radar beam direction shows the SJ radar head has moved and is pointing in the correct direction. It still does not rotate of its own accord. The SD radar mast is missing.
With the SJ radar slot set to 1946 (and SD slot set back to default date) the radar mast does not appear at all. Neither scope is functional and won't even turn on. SJ Radar mast is missing in external view. SD mast is present.
This was tested with stock 1.4, clean install, no mods whatsoever.
This piqued my interest a bit, as it seemed very strange, so I did a bit of digging. After much experimentation, changing various things in the upgrade packs about, I discovered that if you change the UpgradePacks.upc file, in stock 1.4 it's section 26, changing the IDLinkUpgradePackElements line to include SJ1radarApp, it allows the SD mast to be not present, the SJ radar mast to be visible AND it auto rotates. For some reason, the auto training ability must be the 'SJ1RadarApp' part of the upgrade.
The complete section is now:
[UpgradePack 26]
ID= UpackSClassSJRadar
FunctionalType= UpFTypeSensorRadar
NameDisplayable= SJ Radar
UpgradePackSlotType= SSurfaceRadars
Type=NULL
UnitUpgradePackIntervalOptionCurrent= NULL, NULL, 0
UnitUpgradePackIntervalOptions1=1942-07-01, 1942-10-01, 700
UnitUpgradePackIntervalOptions2=1942-10-02, 1943-04-01, 100
UnitUpgradePackIntervalOptions3=1943-04-02, NULL, 0
IDLinkUpgradePackElements= SJRadarApp, SJ1RadarApp, SJRadarAntennaEarlySClass
I hope this helps.
Nisgeis.
Nisgeis,
Thank you very, very much! I had tried everything I could think of, except what you did here. That finally solves this issue.
