View Full Version : [REL] New Units: Flakships and Fishing Boats

Two AAA ships are now available: one for the British and one for Germany. They are basically converted light freighters of about 1100 GRT. For the British version I wanted to use 4.7 inch guns as the main guns but the game did not recognize them as AA weapons. 3 inch guns have been substituted. The German ship might be a helpful addition in harbors, especially between 1943-45. Each comes with six camoflage skins.

The trawlers are smaller units of about 350-450 tons. The ships I posted pics of earlier were too large, so I shrank them. Three have sails to assist their engines, while one is of a more modern design. They have piles of fish on the foredeck (which tend to fly in the air whenever they take a torpedo hit). If you don't like the fish, let me know and I will get rid of them. Also, can you guys let me know if there are any anomalies with the skins?

These trawlers sink very quickly when torpedoed, but I don't think you'll want to waste a torp on them in practice.

All ships have been tested for CTD's, with none found. Install should be easy. However, please read the readme's included, and back up your englishnames.cfg or germannames.cfg files.

Then I guess I will upload a fish-less version to "clear the air". In the meantime, if you are familiar with Pack3d the readme has instructions on how to get rid of them manually.

Still, you have GOT to see those fish go flying after a torpedo hit. It's pretty funny. (Although tragic for the fishermen).

The mod has now been updated - thanks for the heads-up A6. The cargo nodes have been disabled (so no tanks or crates), a bad paint scheme has been fixed, and the unit class has been changed to 104. There is also a fish-less version available.

However, when I checked the Museum to see if the trawlers had been properly installed, they were found listed at the end of the British warship list, and pictured flying the Royal Navy flag. Any advice as to why they're not with the merchants would be appreciated.

I m using stock sh3 V1.4 with same modification but non supermod. I wold love too now how too put the aa shpe in the Campain? I will love too have theam in the campain. And 1 more time great work. I hope u energy will never roun uot and theat u will have the free time too make more gr8 addons. Keep up the gr8 work:up:

BTW - If anyone is interested, I have some British names for some auxiliary flak ships for use in SHIII Cdr. Below are the instructions for adding both the fishing boat and the flak ship to the random names generator for SHIII Cdr:

Add these lines to the first section of the shipnames.cfg file - under [CLASSMAP]

F01B=Largefishingboats
F02B=Largefishingboats
F03B=Largefishingboats
F04B=Largefishingboats

And add this section to the end of the file:

[AAAB1]
0001=HMS Crested Eagle
0002=HMS Foyle Bank
0003=HMS Glen Avon
0004=HMS Helvellyn
0005=HMS Pozarica
0006=HMS Tynwald

I don't have any names for the German one right now, but you shouldn't be sinking too many of those anyway.:know:

I remember another AA ship called "Palomares" (possibly "Pozarica's" sister). Both ships were assigned to PQ-17 in 1942 and survived (but unfortunately Pozarica did not survive the war). Palomares was apparently not a popular ship with the other escorts - they claimed that she monopolized their protection after the convoy was scattered, instead of letting them escort individual freighters. In all fairness, there are conflicting interpretations of what happened, and I suppose we'll never know the truth.

Anyway, nice work. You should see if jscones is planning any interim updates for the new Commander - maybe he can incorporate it.

Also, on the subject of trawlers, this excerpt from a Wikipedia article on the Faroe Islands and WWII suggests another possible type of trawler that could be included in SHIII, assuming adding another nationality, Faroe Islands, is not a big problem:

"During the war, Faroese ships had to hoist the Faroese flag and paint FAROES / FØROYAR on the sides thus allowing the British Royal Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy) to identify them as "friendly"."

We did toy with the idea of adding the Faroes in GWX 2.0 but time was tight

I *think* that the real reason for those small sails is not to aid the engines, but instead to improve the stability of the ship in rough weather, as they act like an air-brake, reducing the rolling. That's at least how they are used in the Mediterranean and in some dutch design boats I know. :hmm:

Wow. I actually hadn't seen that model before I made this ship. It really does look like the Flakship model except for the counter stern and a few other details.

There need to be a lot more smaller freighters in general, so I may reuse the model when I release the Merchant Fleet Mod.

It says it was about 19000. I think this was the one where a US sub fired its entire load of torpedoes against her, and almost all were duds.

If you take your time sailing back and the weather is rough it can move the ships around
As you get closer to port THEN the harbour is rendered

Any ships that have drifted end up with the harbour being placed over the tp of them
Most annoying
Would have been better had the port been rendered first IMHO

Ah...! This explains everything :yep: I always wondered why when they drifted they did not come up against the harbour wall. This explains it.

If I open it up the 3D map only fills half the screen and when I try to scroll it goes all garbled, pain in the ..........neck.:damn:

Thanks guys.

Just tried it and I get the same kind of errors......however, I found the fix after a search. It just involved running the editor from a bat file which disables the rezfix d3d9.dll before running the editor.

Now I can go do some tinkering.

Have asked on other posts but perhaps you've missed my question.
I have been able to get the AA ship mod to work, its a beauty, but not the trawler. Have you any tips I've downloaded the mod and tried to install via JSGME but I dont see them, I still get the stock, original rubber bath toy trawlers, would dearly love to get my hands on your trawlers.

Also

Any news on your Merchant fleet mod, I've asked before but never find an answer, sorry if I've missed it. Your mechant skins are the best and I still hope they will replace all of the stock merchant skins, or did you abandon the merchant fleet mod

get Wow. I actually hadn't seen that model before I made this ship. It really does look like the Flakship model except for the counter stern and a few other details.

There need to be a lot more smaller freighters in general, so I may reuse the model when I release the Merchant Fleet Mod.

Check for them in Museum mode - they should be there. Are there any generic entries for type 104 in your campaign layer? If not, the new trawlers will not spawn. If there are, maybe the game just hasn't yet randomly generated one of the new vessels yet.

The Merchant Fleet Mod is alive and well - most of the ships have been totally revamped from the original beta release. However, it will be postponed for several weeks due to real life commitments.

Thanks for tip re trawlers will continue to look out for them.

Is there any way you could make them replace all the trawlers in SH3, the stock trawlers and many of the very small coastal vessles in sock SH3 just look ridiculous compared to your skins. Could the mod be altered to just wipe out all of the original trawlers and replace them with your new skins?

I'm confused where to to place the files that come with AAAships. My main folder is C:/programfiles/ubisoft/SHIII/ but do I have to open DATA too or just drop them in that main folder??

This is the second time I encounter that weird *.7z extension, I don't know what to do with it, where do I have to place this?? Or how do I use it to begin with??


EDIT: Never mind, seems that I had to download a program to unpack it, that worked and so did the add-onn in JSGME.

It's free, and many will say better than winzip etc.
