View Full Version : [TEC] missing eyes

hi,
i'm investigating the missing eyeball problem and this
is what i've got so far:
eyes are not missing but stuck on the wrong position
inside the head. editing marine.dat allows to change
position (z-axis) of the eyeballs.
but this does not solve the problem as not all
crew members always have missing eyes at the same time.
files that could be causing the problem are:
data/library/characters/marine.dat
data/shaders/ - too much to list all..
maybe someone with real knowledge could take a look.
for me on my ATI card HD3870 eyes are only missing on the
conning deck, but that all the time.
it would be helpful for further investigation if all of you
with the missing eyes issue could list which graphics card you have
and when the problem does occur.

GeForce 8800 GTS 512 (SLI or dual conf) with Forceware version 169.25. Eyes of the crew disappear all the time, but I can't say exactly when. Thanks for your effort I hope you can nail this one down.

When it happens you can clip off the crew's faces with the free camera and see the eyes and teeth inside the head. The eyes normally look at the camera, but when they go into freaky mode, they no longer follow the camera.

The eyeless crewmembers are frightening!
If anyone would sove this it would be great!

Something impossible to fix like an amimation file maybe .

My guys' eyes dissappear in two different ways. Both bored into their skulls and also in their right place but with a skin tone texture instead of the real eye texture.
Oh and this happens to both my watch crew, conning tower and command room crew...
eVGA 8800 GTS 512 G92 w/169.21 drivers with XP SP2 an I have no problems with the eyes.

this is an interesting aspect, never noticed that. thanks for this one!

with the new s3edit some animations can be edited:up:
so we have the problem on all kinds of different graphic cards, i thought
it was only an issue with newer cards:hmm:

I don't think it's a graphic card problem.
I always get it after being in time compression mode for any length of time. I normally swap a crewmember about in the management screen to cure that. Once you do that, they go back to normal.
It's probably the same type of animation issue as the dive planes not working properly if you dive or surface whilst in TC.
Which means it could be a coding issue?

I noticed this very rarely on my old rig (Radeon X1650 Pro, Omega 4.8.442 drivers). Now it's there pretty much every time I load up the game in Single Mission to test my new rig's performance (HD3650 on the same drivers). Maybe it's an AA/AF issue...? I have upped both from AAx2 AFx4 on my old junk bucket to AAx4 AFx8 on the new rig. :hmm:

changing or turning off AA/AF settings shows no difference..
it's a rendering issue, maybe pixel/vertex shader related...
somehow the eyes don't get the right coordinates sometimes.. but why is that?
I have an idea, why not add period sunglasses to all the crew and watch officers ;)

Something just piqued my interest...I re-read the posts, and I noticed you mentioned Marines.dat. As it happens, I'm using an Officer Insignia and Cap mod by Captain Cox, adapted for patch 1.3/1.4, which has a modified Marines.dat file. I don't have the add-on.

there is no difference in using the stock
or edited marines.dat, eyes are still missing.
..this never happened in SH3, so it must be
some of the new stuff they added to the
engine..
I have the missing eyes also and i noticed before that it always happens when comming out of time compression .
I always degradet TC step by step till 1...waited a wile and than moved to the bridge or commandroom . then they had eyes ..next time not .:shifty:
Been playing till a few minutes ago and tried another aproche and hey ...i saw more succesfull switches (with eyes) from stations after time compression (i use max 512 /mostly 64 and 128 and stay at 1 when the enemy is nearby) .
What i dit was : when in time compression and on the map ..DON'T DEGRATE TC..and ALWAYS hit the COMMANDROOM first and then go to the bridge (Don't go from the map to the bridge !). It worked most of the times .
Maybe i was just lucky today ...i don't know ...try it captains and let's see ..:rotfl:yeah ...LET'S SEE
greetz all;)

I muckrd uround with the eyeballs PS file in the shaders/skinning and only changed colour of the eye balls . Maybe some animation file somewhere . Actually didnt Anvat fix the crew head in SH3 . I suspect that in certain models that the eyes dont align in the correct position with the head . Eyes are slightly too far back or something . Same sort of thing maybe . I also notice that they sometimes appear when going from submerged to surfacing .
Hey anvat where are you
I'm played (or should i say simmed:hmm:) over 2 houres now and i can confirme that it works (till now at least) wath i said in my previous post .
Had all the time normal eyes with NOT DECREASING TC BUT HITTING THE WHEELSYMBOL AND GOING ALWAYS TO THE COMMANDROOM FIRST ! (going strait from TC to 1 this way)
The men in the command/controlroom and on the bridge had always normal eyes this way .
ONES !! i had no eyes and that was when i first decreast TC by hitting ( - ) button and going from 128 to 64 and then going to the controlroom .
The wy off this all ....have no idea :-?
greetz all and try it and let us know ;)
ps :never been higher then x 512 TC (i leave that to the star trek skippers among us )

Nice findings there, momo55. Here's the catch, though: I don't think I've ever used TC since I built my new rig (I'm playtesting performance right now, and I'm being baffled by a HUGE slowdown whenever I hit an enemy ship), and still I see missing eyes almost consistently. So there's something else at play as well.

that's right, i have missing eyes right from
the start on conning deck all the time.
it seems that the problem is much more complex
than i thought at first. consistent for some,
like me, randomly for others.
i still believe it has something to do with
how newer graphic drivers, ati or nvidia-
works with the SH4 engine.
i was hoping for a comment from the devs,
if they are aware of this.;)

Damn ...it still works for the commandroom and conningtower ...however ..the bridgecrew lost theire eyeballs ( and are on there knees right now looking for them  .
Don't know wath triggerd it all the sudden ..it went well for houres ...( of gameplay )
I agree with you that there must be something else causing this .
Sorry for the fals hopes i gave

EDIT:Been playing for 10 houres today ( i know..just one of those days ) and just endet patrol .
Never had any eyeproblems in command and conningtower .
Now this is weird ! The only 2 times the eyes where missing of the bridgecrew ..was
when in a rainingperiod .
Rain gone => eyes back
conclusion : We don't need sunglasses ..we need rainglasses !
I think battlestations then secure from BS will get the eyes back...
I think...

i nearly fixed the missing eyes for conning deck, but still
there is a problem..

now for the experts: i added an unified render controller to the marine.dat, so eyes are rendered all the time now.
but somehow the color is a bit off which might have something to do with the exterior lighting..
hi devs! help!:p

Had the problem with my old Radeon vidcard, but since hookin' up 2 eVGA geForce 8800 GTS 512s in SLi, I haven't seen it since. First time I saw this I searched the boat for the crew's stash! But found out they were drinking the alcohol from the compasses! No wonder we had a hard time finding our way back to Pearl!
It's a Vampire:88)
At least you know now who to put in the night watch :rotfl:
I read it here somewhere, im not sure who came up with it but it works 100% of the time...
if you lose eyes, go to the crew management page, swap ANY two crew members and you'll get your eyes back every time. strange...:hmm:

doesn't work on newer cards like the ati hd series..
i dont think its a graphics card issue. (its odd enough maybe it is...?)
it works on my 8800 GT and it also supports the theory of "battle stations" getting the eyes back as well
