Hi, I finally got radar installed but it seems a little useless with a range of only 7.5km, my men can see twice as far!:yep: I then thought this might be good in a fog though, but the damn thing can't see through fog, is this for real, damn that's one thick fog.:rotfl:
I hope there is a fix for this.

It can see through fog fine, but if there are any big waves with the fog, it will have a hard time spotting ships with all that noise.

At the same time, any destroyers will pick you up from miles around because of all those radar signals you are sending out.

And lastly, it only covers a 10degree arc. That means you must make a slow 350degree turn every 10 - 20 km.

The following boats had the sets installed:
U-156, U-157, U-158, U-108, U-124, U-156, U-168, U-172, U-185, U-230, U-430,
U-628, U-632, U-643, U-645 and perhaps one or two more.

Don't expect too much from 1939 radar technology.
The first time they tried the FuMO29 in 1939 they ditched it because it did not work well.

No wonder, virtually useless!:x
My current date is April 42, was silent running (0 knots) at periscope depth in storm in fog, they aproached at about 3km away then at about 1km they spotted me and came straight at me, go figure!!:-?

That, and if you have a heavily modified scene.dat file... you may have also altered sensor effectiveness.

Shouldn't ... but you never know!!

OLC, mentioned to me that one or more of your scene.dat mods changed a setting that numbed the sensors... (most likely the visual sensors though) and said he PM'd you about it with an explaination. You might look at your PM archive just to be sure.

That being said, Kriegsmarine radar wasn't really the sharpest pencil in the box compared to allied tech. They were a bit behind in the race... and in many cases (good weather) the crew could see farther than the unit's detection range. Even allied aircraft patrols would use the radar to find a bearing to a target which tended to be well within visual range... leaned over, and simply used their mark-1 eyeballs to find the target.

Yes we discussed that and found that the setting was .85 instead of .90, he doesn't use minitweaker & the program he used didn't show this value, but I changed it to .9 anyway!:yep:

Yes and I'm using the 8k atmosphere with visuals set to 9k not 16k or my men could see even further!:yep: The sea was rough & part of the boat was showing so that may have been it!

Roger dodger. Just urging caution. The sensors are REAL %$#***!&%!'s to isolate and adjust... and are really really easy to fubar.

Hi Reece,
You say you were at periscope deth, zero knots in a storm with heavy fog?.........
I didn't think any of the radars were scope mounted so they wont work sub surface anyway?.

Is that about right fella's?.

Water Boy: Yeah, the Fu-29 is bridge-mounted, so you're quite right, it doesn't work underwater.

But, as to Reece's comment (rather than his problem,) au contraire! I find the Fu-29 to be immensely useful. The trick is not to think of it as a tool for detecting the enemy, but to think of it as a tool for summoning him.

Got a crack flak crew? Heading back to port in glorious weather with all your shells unspent? Fire up that radar and sail in a circle! Guaranteed fun!

I added a chunk of tin-foil to my antennae...made a great improvement! :know:

@Water boy, yes periscope depth trying to keep only the tip of scope above, but in storm, almost impossable, end up with part of connong tower showing, but at this period, since I was in a storm with heavy fog they shouldn't have been able to detect my presence, have done in clear weather with no problems!:yep: 90% of all contacts in meditteranean are small cotacts of 1 ship with 2 escorts!

I saw the same thing in the med. I spent three weeks patrolling between Sicily and North Africa and rarely saw anything larger than 2000 tons and often protected by as many as two escorts. Crazy! I really hope the med is more active in GWX 2.1...at least some large convoys and maybe an occasional task force.

Or even a single ship, especially a small merchant, without escorts!:yep:
