Hello. This little mod improves the view when using the periscope. The perescope lense is enlarged and the data input devices are downsized. Zoomlevels were adjusted to avoid contortion. All periscopes are supported, for U-Boats and Fleet-Boats as well. There are two Versions. TM and Stock. If you want to use the mod together with Triger Maru use "Optics2 over TM". If you want it with another supermod or stock game use "Optics2 over Stock".
Now you can actualy see the masts ;-). Enjoy!

Nice!
What lines did you edit in the INI file?
there were many.
The entire G26 and G2B section actualy. If you want to combine it with something just copy paste G26 and G2B completely.
Werner, FANTASTIC WORK MAN! (as per your usual)
Been waiting for this, Great job Werner!!!

no this wont work with 1.4
1.5 uses entirely new way how it draws the periscopes. If you try to install it on 1.4 the game will crash. But you can use the previous version of this. MaxOptics is about the same for 1.4.

Werner, is it posible to get the changed lines??
So it would be easy to enable this mod with JTxE.

your mod is a good idea but there is one problem.
Ive also added new lines that did not exist. How do you face that?
The easiest way to compbine the mod with something else is just to replace all G26 and G2B Items. They are dealing with periscopes.

First things first, this mod is awsome. But...
I wonder what lines are new in menu_1024_768.ini file?
Im asking because the software I use to compare cannot find them,
maybe I've missed on the options/settings somewhere, but here's a pic:
http://www.imagehosting.com/out.php/i1637523_menuini18.JPG
I can see one line commented out in your file thats on the right,
stock menu.ini is on the left and shows a grey line where your edited line is.
The line in the top on that candy color is just "selected".
Yellow letters/numbers are what are actually different.
It's a bit fluffy pic but so is mspaint when saving as jpg.
:D

the new lines are besicly comments. If that is not a problem for that tool i can make the mod compatible. PM me the ini file in correct format please. The above changes are correct.

Werner,
comments line are normally used to show visually what happens or to mark out not used lines.
This is nice to memorize for a modder but are not very usable for sh4, because of making bigger the moded files.
The idea of JTxE is to give the user the possibility to use a lot of different Mods which used the same files. Instead of writing a menu1024 which combines mod1 and mod2 and mod3 and one for mod2 and mod3 and mod4, it will be helpfull to put the changes in an extra ini-mod and let the people enable it with JTxE.
It would be nice if you add to your thread the changed lines. Otherwise people has to use winmerge to find out the differences and this could let them get mistakes.
You will help a lot of other users to save time.
Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

Well im a programmer i know what comments are good for. And it doest hurt to have extra comments. The game engine is not just ignoring them it doesnt even see them. For the game there is no difference if you have 1000 lines of comments or none.
Anyway - i have a reason why i left them in. Ive commented the default values for other moders. Ive been often looking at someone elses work and wondered about default values.
The lines in my post above are the changed lines for those who need them.
I appretiate the idea of JTxE its a usefull tool. As i said if you give me the according ini file ill update the mod so it is compatible.
Yeah, you can either download it from here (http://files.filefront.com/SH4+15+Optics2+inifile+for+JTxE/;9840752;/fileinfo.html),
or you can just copypasta this code and save as ini file,
something like "Optics2 inifile for JTxE.ini" or whatever.
Here's the code:

ive been PMd now a couple of time so id clear something out...
1. This mod works only with SH4 1.5 (u-boat addon) not with 1.4
2. US sub periscopes are included
3. the view is enlarged by 50%
4. there is no problem with stadimeter, it finds correct range as intended. There is also no skew or distortion of the image.

I realize this is an older release but I like the look of it and I'd like to use it with my RFB 1.52 + RSRD game. I notice you mention that anyone using other supermods than TMO should use the the "max optics over stock".
I have no problem with that, I even have no problem with tinkering with the 1024_768.ini as the relevant section and lines are posted on the first page of the thread. What I'm having an issue with is the Camera.dat.
I assume I need your camera.dat to get accurate stad readings (please correct me if I'm wrong on that)?. The problem is your camera.dat overrides the one in RFB and now I'm unable to be able to move about the sub with the free cam.
I assume this is fixable by using sh3editor, but I don't know how to use that program very well and I certainly don't know what to change in order to allow me to move from one side of the sub to the other?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a version that will support both TMO 1.7 and 1.8

Special note about the TM version. This mod over writes the "Nite Scope" mask on TMO

I tried the stock mod on FOTRS. I set up for a Dick O'Kane 90 degree attack at 800 yds using manual targeting with the Easy AoB, and picked off a two large troop ships and one medium passenger ship travelling convoy style. It was a single attack with a salvo of six shots, two for each ship. Hit them with two shots each. The scopes looked good.:yeah:
Then I blew a single attack on two freighters usig aft tubes at over 3,000 yds. :06:I must have been over enthusiastic.

Of course, I took a copy of my existing menu_***.ini file, put it into a JSGME folder, made the edits to it according to the differences listed in post #11, and then enabled my own little JSGME mod.
First of all, extract WHAT? There is no file. Filefront link is no good.
Second, don't put content information in your reply header... I had no idea what you were saying until I noticed that.
Third, even if I had the file from Filefront, I haven't seen a RFB version of this mod. If I enabled the "for stock" Optics 2 menu***.ini file I'd lose out on the changes that RFB makes to that file compared to stock.
Lastly I found the hard-to-see user link to it.

Yes, I wonder why all these old mods are being dug up out of the grave when the state of the art is so much better today in all the major mods.
Frederf: if you could post the stock game version here and in the downloads area, possibly someone will pick it up and release an RFB version.

You know it just occurred to me that if you want juiced optics, your best bet is Capn Scurvy's Maxoptics, which increases your periscope and binocular magnification as well! It preserves the camera in RFB and TMO with separate versions for those mods.
I won't touch the thing with a ten foot pole, as I like realism, but you might like it.

I thought MaxOptics was just for 1.4 and I'm running 1.5. Honestly given an hour I could probably merge the good Optics2 changes with the RFB changes.
There are all sorts of weird unadvertised "extras" with Optics2 like how the 2D heading gauge is even smaller which makes precise inputs even harder and the blue stopwatch hands are totally wtf. I also noticed that the nice Attack/Obs scope different reticule patterns and overlays was lost as well.
As for realism, I figure Optics2 is closer to reality in terms of resolution density. It's still 1x/4x zooms (right?), just larger viewports at the same FOV so each of the screen's pixels is a smaller fraction of the overall so the size of the pixel is less in the way of seeing what there is to see.

My machine crashed. I play TMO 1.7 to 1.8 beta. The link lurker put up for werner sobe's optcs x 2 is down. What does his comment about masking the night periscope mean re TMO beta? Should I simply download max optics3, and is it compatible with TMO beta?
TMO 1.9, is out and downloadable. The latest optics for the Fleetboats in TMO and RFB are pretty good. If you want to take it further you will have to adapt something to something. Thats cool!

This is the stock version without change
http://wwwnew.filefront.com/14355005/Optics2-over-Stock.rar/
This is a version that will support both TMO 1.7 and 1.8
http://wwwnew.filefront.com/14355001/Optics2-over-TM.rar/
Special note about the TM version. This mod over writes the "Nite Scope" mask on TMO
I have no plans to make any other versions of this mod.
These mods have been removed from my FF acount.
Is there anywhere else we can find this wonderful mod?

The lights are out. It is cold down here. Crew are down on the deck, and the SS Barbarina won't be coming up for air. We are finished. A broken motherboard did us in, we are on ETERNAL PATROL until I can afford a new gaming computer. My first mate's final (he passed away a few minutes ago) report blamed our situtation on TMO1.9., "Ducimus' destroyers finally got us. They blew up the motherboard."
Before signing off for the forseeable future, the Barbarinna's report to Subpack follows:
Yamoto on fire, dead in the water. Ise sunk. 8 torpedoes at sunset using Optics 2, Easy Aob, and Solution Solver performed flawlessly. Tell Gunfighter to send our beloved emblem to the Smithsonian and ask Neal to save the links to the Optics 2:salute:.

Of course it's meant for you! It's meant for everybody. It was just because of arnahud2's whin...I mean asking (just kidding) that I got hold of it and put it up.
Thanks again Sailor Steve,
I knew it was for everybody. I couldn't resist. I had to say something.
Thank you for you help

Thanks for the mod, but I am not sure how it will work with TMO1.9. Will see.
