Sorry guys. I'm sure many of my questions have already been asked over the past year, so I'm instead going to ask for some advice on what threads have the best information.
I just modded SH4 to use TMO 1.5 w/RSRD. I have never played SH4, so this is my first time to experience the sim. A good thing from one point of view, not so good from another.
I never left port after discovering all the F keys are mapped differently from the keyboard layout. Most of what I learned from SH3 doesn't seem to apply to SH4. Very strange in my opinion. Everything seems awkward and out of place. For example, the map doesn't scroll when you move the mouse cursor to the edge. How do you center on your sub after moving some distance from it on the map? How do you toggle the free camera view (I get the AA guns when I hit F11)? Lots of little things which I'm sure have already been compiled somewhere.
I need to get my bearings (no pun intended).
Thanks

Don't know what changes TM might have made to the key assignements, but you could read the ReadMe that came with it to see. Other than any changes made by a mod, the keyboard layout for the game should be the same as what the reference card that comes with the game (either actually printed out or the one in the game install folder).
I do know that if you hold the Ctrl key and click the mouse, that the view will be re-centered on your sub.

Well, I knew this sim was hosed when it was first released. That's why I waited so long to play it. I figured the patches and mods would have corrected such things by now. I guess not.
Here's the function keys now....
Keyboard Layout
F1 Help
F2 Command Room
F3 Navigation Map
F4 Attack Periscope
F5 Bridge
F6 Deck Gun
F7 AA Gun
F8 Sonar
F9 Radar
F10 Sub Management
F11 Free Camera
F12 Captain's Panel
What You Get
F1 Help
F2 Command Room
F3 Attack Periscope
F4 Bridge
F5 Navigation Map
F6 Tactical? Map
F7 Crew Management
F8 Mission Objective
F9 Ship Gauges (Next to Sonarman)
F10 Deck Gun
F11 AA Gun
F12 Free Camera
You'd think the developers would have kept the same key mapping from SH3 (what were they thinking?). MicroProse is forming back up. Maybe they will release a new version of Silent Service (I can only hope).
Editted to add: I guess I can get by with clicking the toolbar in the lower left corner to move around (you need to to operate the radar anyway). Habits are hard to break. But I have to repeat it...I'm crossing my fingers on MicroProse. Best news I've heard in years.

What you get is what you get, dude. Check TMs readme before you go saying the sim is hosed. Looking at the STOCK commands.cfg, it looks like everything agrees with the keyboard layout. Looking at the TM commands.cfg, I see the commands that you show as what you get.
What you got was a modded command set up, which should be spelled out in the README

Thanks for the tip. I know you're trying to help but unfortunately there is no readme for this mod. Just a bunch of change logs and a credits file. Nothing to explain why things are the way they are. If I knew the mod was going to change the keyboard mapping in advance, I wouldn't be posting questions.
As to my comment about the game being hosed. I was referring to the stock version released last March...and it was hosed...which is why there's so many people here trying to make things right. Expecting to buy functional software "off the shelf" these days is a pipe dream. And now with all the modders available, software companies probably feel even less pressure to release a working title. It sucks.

Hmmm...very informative reply. Not exactly the answer though.

Actually the TMO readme doesn't say anything about the remapped F-keys, except for a credit listing for "initial commands.cfg development".
It's the TM 1.7.6 readme that has a bit more(although still not much) on this

It should though be obvious what is causing the changed keys if the key assignments happen to change after installing a mod. Oh yeah, F1 ingame is THE key to use

Keyboard commands in TM or derived from Sh3, but slowly evolved over time to encompass functionality not found in SH3. The only MAJOR difference in Function keys is F9 brings you to the conning tower instead of the german radio room. After years of playing SH3, i found the SH4 keyboard layout akward and cumbersome.

Thanks for chiming in Ducimus. I found a SH4/TMO keyboard layout that can be printed on another thread. I was hoping somebody would try and reconcile the SH4 layout to match SH3. I see you have "H" mapped to Sonar. I haven't had time to work with Radar yet since I'm just starting here but assume from what I've read so far that it's really not necessary to have the station.

Maybe this went over my head. Is the first post on the TM thread the readme file? I was looking for it in my MOD folders but couldn't find anything.
Thanks

Yep the first post is the readme, although I think it's also in your TMaru/Support folder. It's always a good idea to read and understand the first post in any mod thread, since they usually contain information that you simply must to know in order to use the mod succesfully.
